  • I’m continuing my series where I compare original movies to their remakes. This month’s movies are The Thing From Another Planet (1951) and The Thing (1982), both are adaptations of John W, Campbell's novella, Who Goes There? published in 1938.

    Great dissection of these two classics. I never missed The Thing From Another World when it came on TV. My dad saw it in the theater said he almost jumped out of his chair when The Thing was on the other side of the door.

    Another excellent collab by two of my favorite creators. Still need to see the OG Thing. The remake I saw on TV when I was 12 and it freaked me out. Even though I was well educated on 80s horror and thought nothing could affect me like that. A true horror masterpiece from one of the greatest directors at the top of his game.

      Oh, man, seeing this at 12 would have been such a treat. Of course it affected you, not too many films from the 80s could compare to this gem. And definitely check out the original, I think you'd enjoy it as well. Thank you for the love, Scare Bear! ✨

    Another great show, Rainbow and Anthony! So cool how you're able to appreciate each film for what it is and the decade when it was made. Would love to hear your take on 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' 1956 & 1978.

      Hey there, CrescentMoon! Thank you so much for the love. And that movie is actually on my list, I've been wanting to check out the 50s version for awhile now. I hope you're having a great weekend!

      Hey, Casey! Thank you! I’ve gotta check out the 2011 still, I like the idea of it being a prequel. And yea, Quentin sure is sneaky. 😅

    Brilliant discussion you two! Loved watching and listening to this while making my supper. I think Tarantino has acknowledged that Hateful 8 is kinda based on The Thing. I haven't seen the original yet so I thought that "shut the door" reference you picked up on was great! Right, I enjoyed that video so much I'm going to put the Carpenter version on and enjoy my plant-based burger and a pint of Guinness. Hopefully I'm not infected by the burger! 😅👌🎬

    Another great episode discussing 2 great movies. Sidenote I also love The Thing (2011) I understand they dropped the ball with the CGI however the characters and set up as a prequel was done well IMO

    • @rainbowFRIGHT
      @rainbowFRIGHT  Před 16 dny +1

      Thank you so much, DannyG! I actually saw a little behind the scenes video for the 2011 version and it seemed like they had a lot of practical effects planned but went heavy on the CGI last minute, so weird. I still want to check it out one day though.

    • @dannyg8960
      @dannyg8960 Před 16 dny

      @@rainbowFRIGHT yes I believe there is a cut somewhere with mostly practical effects but 'Test screening' had negative feedback so CGI was edited in.

    You can find on YT videos where Carpenter said it was not a remake. He loved original so much he would never remake it. He said he went back to novella as source material and not the older movie so it is an adaptaion and closer one. He made homage to the older movie with title font. Even on wiki it says "a faithful adaptation of the novella" not a remake and on IMDb it says "Version of" and not remade/remake/reboot or anything like that.. Only unofficial horror sites called it a remake as they needed a good movie for their "best remakes list" in the sea of bad remakes.. It is an adaptation in the end as Carpenter said it himself.

    • @rainbowFRIGHT
      @rainbowFRIGHT  Před 15 dny +1

      Understood, we mention in the video that this is a more faithful adaptation than Howard Hawks' film but for the sake of my series I've included these films. We explain why Howard Hawks' film ended up being what it was versus a true adaptation of the novella. I appreciate your insight though and thanks for stopping by!
