Could I get even close to a shot like Master Photographer

- Now, given that I was back on the Dingle Peninsula for the first time since they all visited last September, I arrived at one of the locations I had brought them to and was immediately reminded of the conditions that we had to shoot and the different shots that each of us got. The weather was similar with regards to the wave action, although it wasn’t as wild as we had back then, nonetheless, I set about giving myself another personal challenge to try and emulate a shot that master photographer Michael Shainblum had got on that day. His shot encapsulated what it means to photograph large waves and the conditions we had then were similar to today, so I set about trying to get my version.

Great work, Darren! I was on Clogher Strand 3 times during my trip last month to try my hand at Shainbluming. I watched all of those videos from Sept, dropped pins on Google Maps and spent part of my trip visiting most of them, then later visiting the places I know best (West Cork). It was a great resource, so thank you for getting that together. It’s about time Ireland got its due 🍀

Liked most of the images, but thought 6:20 especially rocked.
Michael Shainblum seems to have enough ability to create beautiful images that it might reasonably have been distributed between several people (myself included). He also seems to be a nice enough guy that you can’t even have the satisfaction of hating him for it.

One of those images toward the end almost looked like a whale, the way they come up out of the water, turn and splash backwards. I hope you choose that one for the Behind the Raw video.

I am signed up for a course in 2025 to do waves on Lake Superior. It won't be as epic as this, but this video makes me see the wisdom of my choice (and make me regret, yet again, at being so landlocked here in MN)

I see that the longest focal lens you used for these pictures was 200mm which seems to me a bit too short for the biggest impact. One of Michael’s strengths is his use of 3-400mm focal length for landscape photography. Did you limit yourself intentionally to 200mm? These lightening conditions with reflections all over the places were really challenging!
Indeed! I wanted to shoot at 200mm as this was the lens I had when I decided to give myself the challenge ! Tough light without a doubt but again it was all about challenging myself
