Researchers from Monterey Bay Whale Watch (gowhales.com/) who witnessed the encounter say the orcas' coordinated attack was likely meant to harass the whale for fun and not a planned hunt. The attack caused the blue whale to thrash around and quickly flee from the pod. Although killer whales do prey on blue whales, this behavior is rarely observed in Monterey orca communities.
