- Rafael Marquez denied South Africa a dream start to their FIFA World Cup™ with a late equaliser for Mexico in a 1-1 draw in an absorbing Opening Match at Soccer City.
Carlos Alberto Parreira's hosts appeared on course for three points when Siphiwe Tshabalala fired them in front with a superb 55th-minute strike. But after Teko Modise had missed a clear chance to seal victory, Marquez rescued the draw that Mexico's first-half dominance deserved with a close-range finish 11 minutes from time.

I was still in high school back then, I only watched the games that were plaid in my province which is Eastern cape.

I’m a Mexican and huge fan of el Tri, but this is one of my favorite soccer moments ever. Truly historic for South Africa, the whole world was celebrating alongside the man that day.

This was a such an underrated World Cup. This was a brilliant game as well, and the South African goal was a peach

I'm Mexican. I gotta to admit that was a great goal by South Africa. I still get goosebumps! I remember watching it and I thought Mexico was going to lose but in the end Marquez scored. At least we draw. But hey South Africa played better than Mexico.

South Africa was a good opponent, but Mexico got 2 legitimate goals canceled. Mexico had to win that game, but unfortunately for their luck, the hosts were the South Africans and in the opening game, they could not lose.

not just the opener, but the entire tournament. We had family down for a get together that summer and all i could think about doing was watching this tourney. My uncle saw the goal and explained to me the great significance of the dance they just did. Great memories.
