Arguably the best submachine gun of WW2 was the Owen, particularly suited to very harsh jungle conditions. It had a separate compartment inside the receiver, which isolated the small-diameter bolt from its retracting handle using a bulkhead. It could be deeply and completely immersed in mud, withdrawn and still function. As far as I know it's the only automatic weapon that had that ability. It also saw use in Vietnam.
Well during the Cold War the best submachine gun ever used was the H&K MP5 it was one of the greatest submachine guns ever and is still used today

Owen gun is quite similar to British sten gun , than Russians used ppsh in bulk and Germans used STG 44

This guy says right at the beginning of the video that "SMGs are the preferred weapons of terrorists". We never see a terrorist carrying an AK. Absolutely never.

@@apersonyoudontknow5492This is correct, the Germans used the term "machine pistol" (machinpistole). But for all intents and purposes, the weapons were meant to fullfill the same role. The MP18 was the first SMG to see active battlefield service.

In the Army, my primary weapon was the M1 Garand. I was also trained on the M1911. 45 ACP pistol. Also the BAR, Ma Deuce, 3.5 inch rocket launcher (bazooka). Saved the M3 grease gun for last. Nobody mentioned that with the M3, it feels like two recoil impulses every time it fires. The first one when it fires. The second one when the breechblock hits the snubber at the end of its travel.
The .45 ACP cartridge is already subsonic (less than 1100 feet per second) in its standard form. In operations requiring suppressed fire, it is far more effective than anything with subsonic forms of .355 Parabellum.
Please note that I am American in CHARACTER as well as nationality and am actively purging Metricrap from my use of the English language. Didn't mention the Sterling/Sten from the UK. I think there was also one (Reisen) used by Marine Raiders and the SSF.
Father of all Submachine guns is actually the Mp-18, but I digress. The Chicago Typewriter is iconic for being the most recognizable and recognized best early(ist) Smg.

For sure the Tommy is far more recognizable and iconic, but any serious historian wouldn't make the claim that it's the "father of submachineguns".

It's been years since I've watched this video when it was first aired on the History Channel.
Well Thompson was hands down the best even by today's standard .45 acp in a close range cqb is absolute devastating
So long as it didn’t jam, it was notoriously unreliable due to its complexity.
It has it's flaws but reliability isn't one

What I heard about the tommygun during ww2 is the more experienced guys would trade it to a new person for their Garand. I don't know how true that is as it's something I heard second hand so take that for what you will. I have also heard they were really particular to reload.
and no mention of the M1 carbine which later in the war could be fired full auto.

My father was Army, Vietnam happened while he was serving. They issued him a Tommy, he hated it but, it saved his life a few times while he was there.
Well that’s not really true the Germans created the stemgever 44 it was a 1st generation AR15 style platform. The USA modeled the M16 after it.

It is say it is able to fire rounds range from 9mm, 45ACP, 4.6mm and the 5.7mm.

Nothing out performs a Shotgun at close range. Each pull of the trigger sends 9-9mm rds down range. You can send 81 rds down range inside 3 seconds..

How is it possible to talk about the "evolution" of the submachine gun and leave out the iconic Russian PPsh and PPS-43, weapons which were instrumental in the Russian defeat of the Nazis during WWII, remember?

For the grease gun being the cheapest gun it’s very expensive to purchase these days. I think last time I saw one in person for sale it was 3000$(which was 14 years ago)
Also taping another magazine to a gun makes much more sense if they pointed opposite each other so you don’t fiddle around looking for the top of the other magazine.
Sten woulda been nice too. Or the type 100. Glad to see mp40. Deadliest one has to be the MP7 though. She’s beautiful

The suppressor does not in fact slow down the bullet! Is he sure he's army ranger? A suppressor suppresses the sound or gas. The ammunition has to be subsonic in order for it not to break the sound barrier.

My uncle was a gunner on a tank destroyer, used a grease gun and swore by it.
When my engineer battalion was visiting Ft. Bliss in 1985 I saw an M60 tanker with a grease gun . He commented it was not very accurate
I used one for many years as an M60 tank crewman. They are just as accurate as any other submachine gun, and quite easy to control. No submachine gun is really going to do much more than hit a human size target at around 50 yds.
Tank crews were still carrying the M3 during the Gulf War in 1991.
It was in service from 1942-1992. The official replacement was the M4 which didn't come around until 1994 so tankers had to use M16s. National Guard in some cases had them as late as 2008. Even some regular army had them after 2000.

M3 is based on the Sten design. Only the magazine position is the same as the mp38/40
33:03 This is dumb. The MP5SD doesn't change the velocity of the projectile. Certainly not to this extent without loading different cartridges.
One thing they should've gone over is why drum magazines are not practical. Heavy, bulky, not very reliable, time-consuming to load, and they rattle when on the move. Hence why militaries don't use them.
The 30 caliber BAR was a brute it could go through walls so yeah BAR!
The Thompson was not what started it all. German infantry were using the MP18 at the end of WW1. (The guest acknowledge this much)
