Felt that one man. I’m currently 19, and I had the same kind of situation but my mom was gone too. I used to listen to brother Ali when I was younger but couldn’t appreciate it correctly until I was older. I was hardly gonna graduate and when I got my shit together all I listened to was a Brother Ali playlist I had made and it always started with “self taught” and went from there. Fuckin love the music man, hope to hear every gem you have planned 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Ya know what's a real shame? All thru COVID and all the madness that has ensued throughout, I've been steady searching and hoping for more of this man's music and I somehow missed this intimate show with this Brother of ours. I'm glad I finally made it here.

Agreed. I listen to his music whenever I'm having a hard day and it always makes me feel better. A part of me feels like I grew up with his music. I used to be very angry at the world, but have learned to direct my anger to things that are constructive as I grew up. Hoping to see him again at some point. Been blessed to see him a few times in Colorado. Hope he blesses us again at some point with another one of these.

I’ve been seeing comments about people that didn’t grow up with a father, I definitely did not… I was raised by an extremely strong mother; yet I still struggled with the fact I didn’t have father figure so, how could I be one to my kids one day… But listening to your music has made me realize I can still be a solid force in my kids life regardless if that man was there or not; it’s made me realize my full potential… I can still grow. I can still raise my children right, I can still find the truth in Allah.. Thank you, my brother… and may peace be upon you, as well as the mercy of God and his blessings…

I’m going to be 29 this year and I’ve been listening to you since I was about 14. 15. You gave this blind kid hope when I had non and confidence that I never knew I had thank you brother I love you.
I literally haven't heard or thought of Brother Ali since I moved in 2008 but for some reason your name just popped into my head. I was in the darkest of dark places when I heard Own Light for the 1st time. So down, so out, lost, depressed, dead end road I was on && i felt ibwas at the point of no return... that track gave me strength. I could feel it inside me. Filled me wit joy, wit happiness, I knew things were gunna be okay..
My last concert before Covid was Brother Ali, Open Mike Eagle and Video Dave... a great hold over until we get concerts back.

Seen alot of comments from people about how you helped them through your music in one way or another. Well, might as well throw my hat in the ring. Spent 10 years deep in an oxy addiction. When I finally got sober I had to reconnect with things that once made me happy. It was tough because between depression and just not wanting to do much it was hard to get the spark going. I used to wake up early and get a coffee and drive around backroads by myself and slam my stereo while listening to your music. For real, it was one of the things that helped me get back on a good path. So thanks for making music I could really feel. Fire in the sky still goin' strong!

One of my favorite hip hop artists of all time. Shadows On The Sun, like for many of us, was a staple in my development as a young man around age 19/20 when it came out. Brilliant lyricist and someone who values truth and genuineness.
One thing I am, unfortunately, upset about is that I went and saw Brother Ali live for the Shadows On The Sun 15 year anniversary (in Denver) and he played the _entire album_ from start to finish, and only skipped one song...Shadows On The Sun. For Pete's sake, that is the title track and the name of the tour, and he didn't even perform it. Not sure what's up with that but it was kind of a slap in the face to us true fans. I thought maybe he was saving it for the encore or something but when he went off stage and the lights came on, I was baffled as to why the hell he didn't even perform the title track. Sorry to say it but I can't bring myself to go to another Brother Ali show after he did us dirty like that. Still a huge fan but really disappointed at that.

Thank you, brother Ali. I discovered your music in my late teens, very shortly after I had lost my father and my mom was in and out of rehab and I am now 31. Most of my friends were struggling with drugs, and although I smoked weed from time to time I would never go further and I never drank alcohol because I saw how it affected my family since childhood. Anyway, your music always was a source of safety for me, it helped me hold onto that strength inside that resists to succumb to any kind of despair. That nothing in the darkness of the conditions of my existence can affect that kernel inside that is attuned to the Good, and I always felt your music resonated with whatever name you want to give that infinite source of strength. Last year my best friend, who struggled with an opiate addiction a lot in his last years, committed suicide. I can’t tell you how much your music helps me actually get to a place where I can allow myself to feel these events and mourn for the people I’ve lost. So again, thank you for the courage to be vulnerable on a public platform and allowing people such as myself to be in tune with our own vulnerability and in it muster the strength to show sincere and genuine love for those in our lives who really deserve to feel loved, and in return be open to receive it. Lord knows that that is not always easy.
