There are many classic games that don't get the praise that they deserve. I can remember being so excited when I got the Nintendo NES for a 🎄Christmas🎄 🎁present.🎁 As I've said before, after that, well I was hooked when I got an Atari 2600, also a 🎄Christmas🎄🎁present.🎁 I loved video games and I got my first ever job which allowed me to buy more systems and games. Heck before that I would shovel ❄❄snow❄❄, 🍃rake🍂🍁leaves🍃, clean up people's yards, wash cars, whatever, and save my allowances too. One other system I feel wasn't given much credit or time was the TurboGraphx-16. Bonk's Adventure and Bonk's Revenge were two of the best "side scrolling adventures" to ever come out. Now decades later channels like this are going to help me in my quest to regain some of the best retro games that were released. Quite a few of them are available, but extremely expensive so knowing and seeing them played helps a lot!
This game was released in 1998 I was 13 years old at the time, Midway video gaming were amazing, This was one of my favorite racing games, I had my own game also I use played in the arcade version the graphics were amazing! Back in the late 90’s video games were getting huge!
@@boxMAN29 around the late 90’s very early 2000’s going to the new millennium every video game graphics we’re being to be awesome even the arcade games was well.
Um.. What? 1. I find that offending. 2. I never said this game was better than Test Drive.. I said California Speed brought back memories. What the hell is your problem?
Well, if you would of asked (which you hadn't), I would of told you that amazing is in the context of nostalgic, not that the game is any better than Test Drive.
If there was any old-school racing game to remake from the "Crusin'" era of racing games, this would be at the top of my list. The stage designs are really unique - bringing out the more exaggerated representations of California was a huge reason I dropped many quarters into the arcade and got the N64 version! Dat moment: --when in Silicon Valley, you end up driving into a computer; --when in San Francisco, you bypass all the traffic by driving on the cables on the sides of the Golden Gate! Those stuck out the most for me. =)
There are also the Fuji, Clover, Oval, San Andreas and California tracks that weren't covered here. The first three are dedicated racetracks; the San Andreas track puts you in a canyon on the fault line, and 'California' supersizes you and sends through the entire state like Kaiju NASCAR.
The N64 version honestly doesn't have some of the effects as the actual arcade game does like there's a Stealth fighter that tries to bomb you when going through Fort Mojave.
Wow the old style racers from those days were fun. I remember when Pole Position was released. Then they made arcade games where you could actually sit down inside of it, like a car, sort of, but not completely. Then the Moto GP 🏍🏍Motorcycle🏍🏍🏁🏍🏁 game. They also made an excellent arcade game with a 🏍🏍motorcycle🏍🏍 you "rode" including the throttle. It was awesome. Then of course they were released for the home gaming systems. There were straight-up racing games, and then they added some unique features. For example Road Rash. Another 🏍Motorcycle🏍 game EXCEPT in this game you also had to battle while you rode. Using a bat, ⛓chains⛓, and other implements in order to 🏆win.🏆 This was a blast and I immediately bought it. Later another battle game was Twisted Metal. More of a demolition derby than a race, but still epically fun! This is the main reason I love the Retro games. They may NOT be as graphically advanced as the newest games, but they were extremely creative, unique, and most importantly they were FUN TO PLAY! They didn't have agendas behind them, or political ideas shoved at you. Just plain FUN! I MISS THOSE DAYS IMMENSELY! 😪
El Lukytas Es uno de los juegos menos conocidos de la Nintendo 64, pero tambien uno de los mejores juegos de carreras de la consola, solamente superado por Diddy Kong Racing y Mario Kart 64.
I'd never seen this before, very impressive - much better than Cruisin' USA. This has a grand sense of scale - think the huge waterfalls in Yosemite, and every track has something unique and iconic. Looks like the artists and designers had a lot of fun with this one. The music is quite varied as well, and mostly quite good.
I don’t understand the criticism this version has, You guys gotta understand the limitations the N64 had, N64 cartridges were small in space and couldn’t hold much (a regular N64 cartridge only held like 16-32 mb), that’s why it’s not exactly like the arcade version but I like both the arcade version and the N64 version the same, both get a 4 out of 5 in my books UPDATE: Ik N64 cartridges reach 64mb but 64mb N64 cartridges were non-existent when this game came out in 1999, the max at the time during this game's release was 32mb, 64mb N64 cartridges did not exist until Conker's Bad Fur Day which was released in 2001.
1gb is actually enough for this emulator, whats make it difference is the processor you are using, but having 1gb more ram can improve performance especially if you have some program running on the background
This game would have been so much better on the PS1. From looking at ROMs, the arcade version comes in at around 600MB I think while the N64 ROM is just under 15MB.
Most of that rom size are just the FMV files of the arcade and higher quality textures. The assets themselves and their textures would be still be downgraded on PSX but the audio FMV will be nearly the same as the arcade. Then again, the precedent set by the PSX Rush port being ass put any possibility of this port aside.
when i was 10 or so i used to play this with the neighbor all the time. i remembered it and downloaded a rom recently, only to find out what a boring game it is. sure reminds me of fun times from a long time ago, though.
how come every gameplay video of California Speed has people using WASD instead of analog steering? it's just jarring to watch. Also since you're not using analog steering, you're going to oversteer every single time.
The graphics are bad. Flat out bad. Actually, "flat" describes most of what you'll be seeing it's still a decently fun mindless racer when you get used to the control. Mindless racer being the type with absolutely no technique, just press gas and watch the screen unfold.
This game is sadly underrated.
The car literally sounds like a vacuum
I thnk it's because it looks like a poorer version of San Francisco Rush 2

This game controls like ass
The Golf Cart OWNED in this game lol
I raise you, The Forklift! LOL
Man I used to LOVE this game as a kid.
24:57 The most positive sign in gaming!
21:52 Oh, I see Dolly Parton's trying sun tanning.
Underrated comment right here
The Yosemite track is crazy: smashing through giant oaks without slowing down and climbing vertical roads, lol
This was such a great game to play back in the N64 days! Loved it!
Holy shit I loved this game as a kid. Completely forgot about it and that damn golf car 😂
oh my god i used to play this as a kid... the menu music is giving me chills lmao

I would love to see a next-gen remake of this game.
Plus a few more tracks would be nice
me too
Oh man the sound it makes while driving on gravel road really hit me with nostalgia
Such an amazing game. Brings back memories. Thanks for the longplay... :D

This game somehow reminds me of the Cruis'n series.
Yeah well it was made by midway like cruisin and was ported from the arcade to the n64 like cruisin
I used to hum this music for hours after playing. Best racing game ever
If you didn’t get to experience this game as a kid mannn you missed out miss those days

Some superb track design in this game.
Fun fact: the resistors in the Silicon Valley stage are 420K ohms.
If San Francisco Rush and Cruis'n USA had a baby, it would be named California Speed.
The golf course was my favorite place in the game 11:14 AWESOME!!!!!
The amout of re-used Rush 2 stuff is kind of amazing to me
Some times god takes mommy's and puppies away sometimes just sometimes I do
I've logged many hours of this eith my siblings back in the 90s. Love this soundtrack too. I remember every melody and I havent played since 02.

love playing dis game back in the dayz
Brings back the nostalgia.
One thing's for sure: This version is VASTLY inferior to the one in the arcade cabinet
Whoa what an obscure memory this unlocked
Played Do The State so many times it never gets old
How trippy is that? Just got a N64 for the first time. I'll have to order this one.
san franciso rush series was the best racer next to mario kart on the 64. Never tried this game
this was a pretty slick game
oh my..... my favorite game!
Best game ever made!!!
this was my firstest game i everd played in my nintendo 64

Best game and fun too! If only Midway can bring that back and allow it for N64 app on Nintendo Switch!
Just picked this game up today CIB
I like the hatchback the most.
I remember this track when I played it in a arcade in Oregon
The silicon valley track that is
i played that track in the 90s as a kid for the first time at Busch Gardens in Williams-burg Virginia. It was awesome.

What's so strange is i think the game uses the same game engine from Rush 2.
Such a fun game
Midway was the leader of Bad ports
not all ports were bad sometimes,
Ports were good for the most part, the problem was the games were never very good.
+Khristian4444 Atari Games made it in arcades under Midway

i remember that game when I was little.

limitations and censorship, but if ya look past that, yeah, your gonna get a good grip on this game i tell ya

This game is a lot like Rush. Is it also made by Midway?
Skaterloo Yes, it's also runs under the same engine.
Huh, that's cool. I guess Rush just got more popularity then. ^_^
Yes, it's the Rush engine, but it's been modified for this game.
Feels like Rush
i missed the menu music

The menu music goes kinda hard
what do you mean by long play? if you think 38 mins is along time, maybe you have adhd, smoke weed it helps either way smoke weed
You should play SF:Rush 1,2,and 3 (Rush 2049). Since those were also Midway racing games.

The game maybe good but shame that Nintendo 64's limitations ruined the game completely.
