Colony Rabbit Hutch Walkthrough (How We House Our Meat Rabbits)

- Instead of confining our meat rabbits to cages, we raise them in a colony. In this video, we'll show you the rabbit hutch we built from scratch, explaining the factors that influenced the hutch's design, why we decided to let our rabbits burrow, and the automated watering system we implemented.
(Our hutch provides enough space for our breeding trio or one buck and two does, and up to two litters.)

A very interesting design. Thank you for creating this video and sharing the idea with us. I would have 2 questions though thinking about starting a colony myself. 1. What kind of filter are you using for the rainwater, how is it called and where could I get one of those. 2. What do you think about putting the mesh on the bottom just 10cm under ground level and creating a dirt pile over it so that they can dig a vertical hole? I have sandy dirt and would be afraid that stepping over one of those underground holes would result in a rabbit fatality. Thank you for the content and greets from the old continent 👍
Did you say "Freezer Camp"? 😂 that caught me off guard.
I did :)
You might try corrugated plastic pipe for the nesting buckets, they may not like the feel of the smooth pipe!
Great suggestion. However, we ripped out all the buckets since they're building their own tunnels and nesting areas (underground) and don't care much for our interfering :)
Thank you for such a nice informative video! We are new to rabbit keeping, and trying to learn from others. We are going to try the colony raising system and you showed us exactly what we need.
Glad it was helpful!
Keep it up, i really love your videos
Thanks a ton!
New sub here. Thank you for sharing. ❤
Thanks for subbing!
Very interesting video. I've also been breeding rabbits for years (for meat and manure) in "traditional" cages, but now I kinda feel "guilty" and I really wanna shift to enclosure breeding for ethical and practical reasons (seems easier to maintain and is cooler in summer heat). But since 'til now they're each one in its own cage, you've made the choice to keep the buck with the does and the kittens, isn't it dangerous for them to be with the buck everyday ? does it harass the females and attack the babies ? And how do you catch them if they wanna hide in the tunnels ? Many thanks in advance.
We have never had any issues with our buck. In fact, we took a photo the other day of one of the babies sitting on the buck's back at night to cuddle up. The usually come out when we offer them fresh greens and that's when we grab them.
🙂🤙
Do you breed those rabbits for eating?
Yes, we do!
Yup! Hence the term:
" Freezer camp "!
Jus 🤷 sayin!!
🥘👍🦊🧙♂️🐺🤙🍲
Is it ok to put adults together in 1 cage?
See czcams.com/video/ZSTOE3XqQ84/video.html for a detailed answer to that question.
how deep did you put the mesh down the sides
In his other video said they dug down 3ft and laid wire all across the bottom and sides
I hope your metal wire is strong enough
Has been holding up pretty well over the past year :)
Let me rent an excavator...
That's what we did :)
