Thanks for watching!
I'm now a distributor for Alexseal and can ship anywhere in the Continental US! Check it out! www.millerboatworks.com
We use a harbor frieght airless sprayer for our non-skid. Roll paint, shoot nonskid (about a foot short of your wet edge), roll the next section, shoot nonskid, etc. Finish with rolling a coat or two of paint. We find that it leaves a beautiful, even pattern. We haven't done it with Alex Seal, but with Awlgrip/Awlcraft.
Another Great Video & very timely, a good friend was doing nonskid on her 350 Catalina, I passed on a link to her.
Thanks for your clear & concise videos!
ill give you a follow man, i just got my first boat and i gotta tell you, you're explanations are genuine, thorough and educational.
Fantastic information you are providing for the masses Andy. Absolutely love watching all the videos mate, very helpful and informative and giving me the help I need with my project.
Thanks for sharing with the world mate. Top job.
Can't wait to see more work on the Bertram videos
thank-you for your expertise, its totally awesome what your doing for the boating community ! Have enjoyed your videos for many years. highly recommended.
Congrats, Andy, on reaching 100K subs! You're well on your way to CZcams stardom!
Can’t wait for next week! Thanks for the info Andy!
This Alexseal product has me excited to paint a boat I don't even own.
I don't even own a boat -I'm building a custom fiberglass high roof on a sprinter van- and you've saved me mountains of hassle on my project. Thanks so much for putting these out. Excellent resource.
Haha, well, I don't know why the text coded with a strike through, but the point is the same, regardless of whether youtube likes proper punctuation.
Sweet bro. THANKS! nice vid.Been Frothin for the Bertram.Yeeewww!
Im sold on Alexseal, ill be using it from now on, i hope they appreciate you showing us how to use it properly.
I've learned more about gelcoat in 20 min. than 5 years of self experiments. I'm no longer guessing if my gelcoat will stay on my epoxy repair job that will get a trim plate bolted back on..Very important to have a bullet proof job Thank you so much. Subscribed for sure
Have painted non-skid on my sailboat. The painter recommended high gloss paint over semi-gloss. He said high-gloss really helps to clean the dirt off. His advice turned out to be very valuable.
Excellent video and just the project topic that I was interested in. I will be following up in a week or two with new
Nonskid decking on a old cat. Thanks Andy for your timely and comprehensive coverage.
That's very thoughtful, you fix the deck so your old cat wont slip and fall while the boat is tossing around.
Wow that is some nice non-skid. That is the process I will use on the next boat I do. Thanks for the great videos.
I remember in the seventies in the Navy we mixed the sand into the epoxy paint then rolled it onto the surface. We were applying it in 5 gallon batches there, instead of pints or quarts. This seems more practical for small batches. Have a good one.
Andy, you're gonna hit 100K Subs in the next video or two! Woo Hoo!!! You average 139 new subs per video. Great Work!!!
Seeding your aggregate to refusal will always give you and evenly textured surface 👍🏻. Another great video
Great video, Andy and an awesome explanation of the products and processes involved.
Great video! I've always wondered how that was done. Thank you.
Well done. Great work and explanation. Thank you!
Excellent explanation on non skid and soft sand product.
Awesome video, Your result looks so good I just want to order some product and nonskid something. Also big congrats on the 100k subs. Very well earned.
Hi from Sweden.
Thank you very veeeery much for all the good videos and ideas with all different things.
It is helping me with my Albin 25 here in the north.
Best regards
Nice job. Next spring project before unwrapping. Thanks
I've moved away from fiberglass boats on to aluminum, but subscribed anyway. Great content and much I can still use.
Very close to 100k viewer's, keep up the good work.
That would have been nice to see both Alexseal panel side by side to compare color and shine. Keep on your good work!
Great videos....thanks for all the great tips!
That looks like a good product and results
Congrats on 100k Andy! Get that silver play button and hang it on the wall. You earned it!
When I applied chips on my garage floor they called it full refusal. Where you spread enough chips, there is no surface area for anymore chips to adhere to the paint. Same idea here. Love that soft sand, great recommendation.
Nice video as usual...between you and Mads I really want to get a project boat on the cheap...and pour tons of money into it...LOL...
100K subs soon!!! Awesome, CZcams needs to get their Play Button ready for you!
Just so happens that my son and I are doing this to his cockpit deck today! He has recored it and now applying the finishing touches. He works with composites in the marine industry, mostly new products. So, this was a bit of a new experience for him. Also, working outside as opposed to a controlled shop environment posed certain challenges. Could be a subject for a future video? Anyway, we both watch your vids and love what you do. Thanks Andy. Also happens to be my son’s name.....although, he prefers Andrew...lol.
Greetings from Las Vegas!!!
Great presentation
Great video bro
Love the show. Found it by accident one day and have been watching since. I've learned a lot and hopefully gotten better. One question though. Okay, maybe two. I'm redoing my boat this fall/winter. How would you prepare the areas that have that little crosshatched areas for walking on instead of a non-skid? Would you non-skid over it?
Woe thats awesome looking nonskid 👍 And you make it look easy to do. Hopefully when I do mine, it turns out as nice. 😊
4 consecutive days, the process is fool-proof!!
This stuff works great
I just finished my own boat last week, full paint and nonskid. i ended up using rustoleum from the local big box (this was before your alexseal video) and finished with a cream kiwigrip. the softsand is what i wish i used but perhaps not for a reason youd suspect... you can easily apply it with one person. kiwigrip kind of requires two people because you have to pull the masking tape immediately after rolling or it will peel. for various reasons i had to apply the kiwigrip while leaning over the boat on a ladder, in my front yard, in hawaii... so its 90 deg out.
suffice to say the edging is less than perfect. now i have to figure out a way to blend in a nonskid recoat in a few spots (its not that bad).
Great Video!
I realize I'm really, really late to this party but if you get a pair of your wife's old panty hose and stuff it up the vacuum you can recover all of the non-skid you suck up in the vacuum. Heck. you probably can just use the vacuum and not bother with the brushing. Just a technique I've used over the years in similar situations. Keep the good stuff coming.
You could put that in a gallon zip lock with lots of appropriate size holes and shake it above a just painted area with the wind at your back so as to not have it land on the deck before you paint the next area. That would be thriftier with the nonskid. The next day you hose off the extra, let dry, avoid walking on it and give it a second coat, then a third.
Nice!
A couple questions, if you don't mind?
First "bonding" coat ; what thickness? Somewhere between the thin, dry roller first paint coat and "flood" coat later over soft-sand?
What is the finished thickness of the non-skid surface above the regular painted surface?
As always; great presentation and appreciated information!
Another great video! Thanks for your opinion on the flattening agent. I have never had anyone explain it the way you did and it makes perfect sense. Definitely will give it a try without the flattening agent.
Great video, thank you! I'll be doing this project this summer and was pretty much sold on Kiwi Grip. I was concerned about that though, because I'm planning to use a 2-part paint (probably Alexseal) for the deck, and Kiwi is a one-part product. Would the Kiwi last as long as the paint? I'm guessing no, so I think I'll go this route!
Great video thanks for sharing. How does this surface hold up to cleaning/pressure washing? I get a lot of fish blood sand etc. on my deck. Thanks for your time.
Great video, great work. Will this product bubble like others if it has a door mat left on it? Thanks
I love your video’s very informative especially this on about a non skid surface. I want to ask a question though. I own a 30’ class A motorhome and it has a fiberglass roof on it. Do you believe that this same processes could be done to refresh my top plus make it a bit non slip for safety reasons when I have to go up and do service like using a dicore leveling on top of vents and covering screws etc to waterproof attachment points as I could fiberglass everything but would be terrible for a replacement if needed in the future. Thanks for all the great classes for boats as well as I do have one of those as well but is in excellent shape at the moment.
Your channel is really fun so keep it up. Off subject, I have a hunter dinghy that is in need of repair and I'm not sure what I can use as far as resin. It tried to leap to its death off of a speeding car and now along the gunwaie has several cracks and fissures. I would be grateful for any info or pointing me in a direction of help.
Great and informative video! Thank you. Question, I'm looking at a 1987 Wellcraft 250 with what appears to be bare wood decking. NOT plywood but more of a butcher block type of surface. How would you go about sealing/waterproofing it and from start to finish? Would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you
Awesome video brother. We have a non-skid already but I will definitely follow your teachings when we decide to replace it. Question tho: is it okay to do this when she is splashed or should I pull her out of the water and do it in a controlled environment? She is too big to haul her around too much so I am hoping this project can be done while tied to the docks.
I wonder if you hadn't thinned/reduced that first "sealing" coat if you'd still need a second coat. Could save a lot of time and money on a full-sized project if so. Whatcha think?
I’m working on this process on my solo skiff build. I have learned a lot watching your series. I just finished my third coat of primer. Tonight, I learned why you like your little mixing cups. I have been using disposable drinking cups to mix my epoxy resin, etc. on my fifth batch of primer, I left it in the cup too long and the cup melted on the bench. Expensive mistake. I will be spending the money on mixing cups going forward.
Andy, Most of us would be working outside doing this. What do you recommend doing if the wind picks up when sprinkling the soft sand to prevent it all blowing away?
always a pleasure watching your videos and lerning from you. Question: Can I apply Soft Sand on acrylic paint - if yes how, what should I take care of?
Best regards and thanks
Efdal
Wow I literally just applied soft sand this weekend. I wish I had watched this video first. I ran short so I didn't top coat it😪 how much area should a pound cover?
You said something to the effect that it would take 30 days to fully cure. What does that mean for use on a sailboat deck? Do you need 30 days of downtime to not ruin your new surface?
Thank you for another really really good video :) One Q from me; what about masking tape? I guess you have to change it every time new paint has been laid on? That is both time consuming and expensive, so do you have a "trick of the trade" in that regard?
good video, i didnt know about non skid paint, i'm going to paint a 22' sailboat when i have time, was wondering if boat owners would generally wax that surface or not after painting.
or would that make it too slippery to walk? do you put anything else to protect the surface?
Love the vlog. Keep up the great work.
When laying out tape boundaries to break up the nonskid and provide a more professional look on a larger surface...do you have to re-tape after every every coat or can you pull the tape after the first coat is 12 - 24 hours dry, sweep up the excess soft sand and then paint the two sealing top coats over the whole deck including where the tape used to be? What gives the most professional look and finish?
I have the same question. Hopefully someone will answer.
'
@@porkchop955 I used the blue tape and left it on between the 3 coats, no problem. My masking was pretty complex due to curves etc so re-masking between coats was not an option.
Hi Andy. This was a very timely topic for me in that I am ready to repaint my decks with non-skid. I did the hull with Alexseal and bought KiwiGrip for the decks. Have you ever used the Kiwigrip product?
I purchased some Softsand back when you first reviewed it. So I can buy the right color for my decks in Alexseal and use the Softsand. Any suggestions?
i'm actually getting ready to do this same project on an 89' 21ft oceanic center console. Looking to start the sanding soon, what would you recommend to wait after the primer coat if i had to throw one in?
I'm in the process of finishing the floor in my boat using Totalboat topside single stage polyurethane and soft sand nonskid.
POINTERS:
Put down a coat of paint thinned 10% with totalboat thinner using a foam roller. Make sure the thickness is uniform by rolling in
both directions and leave no thick paint ridges from the edge of the roller. Uneven paint results in uneven amounts of sand adhesion.
Sprinkle the sand on THICK so no paint shows through. Let it dry and use a soft bristle hand broom and swap away the
excess. This will result in a very even texture, IF your paint was laid down even. The only down side is that you need to buy extra sand.
I used a whole quart of soft sand for an area about 4 ft by 10 ft and then swept up 3/4 of the quart to use on the on the half of the floor.
Next apply another 1 or 2 coats over the sand to seal it in.
Also do NOT paint any smooth surfaces when apply in the first coat over the sand. No matter how well you sweep or vacuum the sand,
the roller will pick up some sand and deposit it on the smooth surface.
Hi Andy! Great channel. I would like to non-skid in a contrasting color with 'teak lines'. The base coat would be off-white. The teak-colored 'planks' would be in tan with soft sand non-skid. My question is how to mask off the base off-white. I could certainly mask off with tape thin strips (to eventually leave the off-white in-between strips.) BUT, after covering over these painters tape mask strips with one finish 'teak' colored paint layer, soft sand, and one sealer 'teak' paint layer, would I be able to pull up the mask strips underneath (to reveal the off-white undercoat?) I'm concerned the mask would get locked in.
What do you think?
Can the softsand be put on top of the primer and then follow up with 2 seal coats of topcoat ?
Looks great Andy. As usual a couple of questions.
1) Does the soft sand tend to blow around easily? I ask because I don't have a "breeze" free place to do the application. I am not talking an outside windy place, just a boat shed with some minor air movement when people leave doors open, etc.
2) This has nothing to do with using Alexseal or soft sand, but have you tried KiwiGrip?
Nice one Andy. I refurbished our club dinghy's many years ago and masked off and non slipped the seating areas. similar to you then painted the whole topsides and it looked like the non slip was part of the moulding as it was all the same colour, did look good. Des.
Andy I have a Catalina 22 and the non skid on the deck looks like it's formed in the fiberglas from the manufacturing process. Any suggestion on how to prep for the Alexseal and SoftSand?
Hi - do you have a video showing the non-skid application process where the deck has sections that are not getting non-skid but are being re-painted?
Regarding Alexseal Anti Skid paint process. If you have a large contiguous area, will it blend so that you can do it over an extended time.
I used your old soft sand method a few years ago with the pettit easypoxy topside paint. Still holding up great. Not the easiest to touch up though, do you think this product would be easier for that?
It would be nice if you could show how to do it on an existing nonskid surface rather than a pure flat surface.
Hi Andy great videos and great help for all of all of us struggling to do repair works on our boats....
Which Alexseal top coat you used? Premiun top coat 501?
Yup, I'm using their 501
Great video - question ,
Since you said you were used to using awl grip. How does this product compare when finished. For instance nothing I mean absolutely nothing sticks or stains the awl grip. I can wipe a rust spot off with a damp towel. Though it is expensive Man it makes maintaining clean up so easy.
80 degrees... It get over 100 degrees in my shop in Florida regularly, big shop fans help but is still HOT.
Alexseal, Alexseal, Andy!
One question for consideration; Would you advise against titanium oxide over Soft Sand?
Could this be applied to starboard? I’ve watched a ton of your videos since I’ve been repairing my boat and they’ve been a huge help.
Andy great video and my second time watching. Can I apply the same process with a one part polyureathane in my cockpit of the kayak Im building. Its Interlux Topside. I have used Interlux numerous times but never with a non skid application. I need to make the cockpit non skid so If you enter with wet feet or booties you dont slip and land horizontal over the cockpit comming. Nasty..........thanks for all the infomative videos you put out.
I like the way this non skid turned out. I'm not sure how to prep a surface with a texture already built in from the factory. I want to paint my deck but wondering if I paint over the old non skid surface, will it reduce the effectiveness of the original and does it make any sense to add SoftSand on top of the old non skid pattern? I have typical Catalina brand diamond shape texture.
Nice bandsaw.
Hi Andy … I currently have non skid sprayed on deck it’s about 5 years older yet it has the very same spots you described blotchy and heavier on certain surface areas than other. Q- can I apply the soft sand on top of existing non skid for a even spread?
Andy, great video as always. One quick question, can Alexseal be applied outside ? I have an old FG trawler and thinking of painting it myself. What about temperature and humidity , I'm in NC and have to deal with both.
I have the same question, only I'm in the opposite situation with regard to humidity. I'm in Utah, very dry and often very hot. I'm wondering how much temperature and humidity play into the 24 hr window for reapplication.
If one was starting from scratch, would you recommend a layer of primer AND a coat of paint, THEN the soft sand? Or do you think one could lay the primer down and immediately start on the sand - saving that first coat of paint, then ending two coats of paint. Essentially, I’m asking if you think you could lay the sand over primer, skipping one coat of paint. Btw, you’re an absolute legend sir, I’ve been in the trades for 20 years and I don’t say this very often, I’m extremely picky and critical, but I would stand behind your work. It’s hard to find quality work anymore, thank you.
May I? Paint wearing off the grit would come off the tippy top. As the paint wears from walking on it, the valleys retain the paint and the tops lose it. Any slight salt and pepper look is not unsightly. So, I guess it probably doesn’t matter. The grit can hide defects, so , if you spot prime any repairs and the gel coat is in good shape, you can start with the top coat.
When you apply your final coat that contains wax an it doesn’t fully cure can you go back over it with another coat of gel coat/wax
I have some molded non skid on my deck. Do you think that this would work well over the top of it?
I am very interested in using the Alexseal paint products and non skid demonstrated in this video. However, I can not get my head around how to approach the process of painting my entire deck and cabin top and applying the non skid as well. Do you have any recommendations? Do I paint the entire deck then come back and apply the non skid at a later date?
If you mask off an area do you leave the tape on for all the days or do you pull up the tape after each application and reapply every time?
Great video Andy, I don’t know if this would help, but the white paint seams to get washed out by the camera. Is it possible for future videos that you can experiment with some darker colors. like Blacks, Blues and Reds
Andy I want to paint the top deck of my 1987 Catalina 30 that already has the factory non-skid surface. Should I just paint it with a epoxy type gloss paint or should I add something to make the non-skid more effective? Would Alexseal be a good choice here? What would be comparable that's sold by West Marine? I live on the West coast and Alexseal isn't readily available outside of having it shipped. Absolutely love your channel btw!!
How soon can one add another coat? Or: what’s the min. time to add a nextfill coat?
Great video Andy. I am planning to paint the deck and cockpit of a 27' sailboat. I plan to use Alexseal and Softsand for the nonskid areas... Can you give an idea of how much Softsand I would need to get good coverage?
If you take the surface area you plan to cover and compare that to the 24"x24" panel he prepped and it should be easy to calculate. Looking at the soft sand site, they align a pint of medium to a gallon of paint if that helps.
His panel looks like it is roughly 4 square feet and he ended up using one bottle. Should be easy enough to measure how many square feet you want to non-skid, then multiply.
I just did my cockpit, it’s 100sq feet, I used just over a gallon of medium sand and layed it on pretty heavy.
Do you clean & reuse the cigar rollers or just throw away and use a new one each time?
is it possible to use screen door screen to make a non-skid , I want to make deck look new again.
boat is an islander 36, 1972, just thinking,, love your videos, my idea is paint a non skid over the screen and pull screen while still wet as I would pull masking blue tape?
I’m curious if it’s ‘soft’ how it’ll stand up over time. Does the paint need a little give? If so Is the alexseal too hard/brittle given how hard it’s proven to be in other videos?
Just wondering how you would add color to the Alexseal?
