Kane talks with correspondent Nancy Giles about how her own mother inspired her character; how Andy Kaufman taught her the "language" that their characters, Latka and Simka, spoke on the TV series "Taxi"; and how, as a student, she resisted the opinion of a doctor who said she should never set foot on stage.

Imagine being 72 and still having your mother. What a blessing (if you like your mother).
Honestly, I hope that's not me...but if you have someone who's an actual loving, carrying, nurturing "mother' like Kane does, that's a different story.
I am incredibly & extremely envious of her. I miss my mom every day, still talking to her even though she's been gone for 8 years.
Oh my! That is so joyous in itself. I'm 32 and don't have my mother. But, I have wonderful memories.
Pretty much a husk by that age.
@@steveconn I'm so sad for you that you have not had experiences with vital older folks in your life. My Mom lost her mom just before she turned 97 (my Mom was 71), and she was remarkable to her last day. I just helped celebrate the birthday of a dear neighbor friend who turned 101, and wish that more people could know her, she is so amazing, and I learn something from her everyday I spend with her.
I did box office for a show Carol Kane was in. One day, she was running late and called the box office to ask if I would jsut pop my head in the rehearsal room and tell them she was running late. She didn't have another number. I'll never forget hearing that iconic voice on the phone and freaking out internally, 'Hello, this is Carol Kane.' She truly is a legend. My dad and I would quote her scenes from Scrooged to each other all the time. At the end of her run with the show, she brought me a red rose. She had been giving them out to everyone in the production and I was so touched that she didn't forget me.
Carol was friends with my brother and after he die she was in town to do a show. She came by and visited my mom. She is a total sweet heart. Never forget that day.
Bette Davis once said if they were to do a movie of her life she would want Carol to play her. I can see that. That's pretty high praise from one of the greatest screen divas ever.
Her comedic timing is impeccable.
I gave her a ride in my cab in the 80s. We had a conversation about movies. Nice lady.

I have loved Carol Kane from the beginning. Now she's even made it to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. She is a brilliant star Long may she shine.
Carol's ensemble role on Princess Bride branded my definition of fabulous comedic acting in my mind, forever.
I had the incredible fortune of seeing Ms. Kane twice as Madame Morrible in Wicked and she absolutely killed it! She brought that classic Kane sense of humor to the role and really made it her own!
She looks dam good for 72 ❤🎉

I actually remember Hester Street! But her role on Taxi will always have a special place in my heart. I think if you asked ten random people to describe Carol in one word, I'd wager at least half of them would say, "adorable." 🙂
“Hester Street” is where I first heard of her. Then I heard about her in “Annie Hall”.
I have a general rule for films
Any film with Carol or Tim Curry in it can not be a bad film over all
That lady (the mother) is sharp as a tack. I hope we can all experience our later years like that.

The first movie I ever watched of hers was When a Stranger Calls. I was a kid and it terrified me. I loved it. I have enjoyed all of her interesting characters from The Princess Bride, Transylvania 6500,and The Addams Family. Wonderful childhood memories of all these movies. Absolutely love her.
I saw that movie recently and was surprised I hadn't seen it earlier. I love her too, she is fabulous!

That's a woefully underrated film. I think it's one of the best American films of the Seventies, and Kane is impeccable in it.

All of my favorite actresses and actors are the ones who are unique. They stand out and leave a lasting impression.

A great role and superb performance, in a terrific, underrated film.
Never will I forget watching two-time Emmy-winning actress Carol Kane as Mrs. Anderson in the Greg Beeman film 'License to Drive' at the cinema whilst on holiday in Michigan back in July 1988. I even like to watch the film - 'Papá Cadillac' - dubbed in Castilian Spanish (Spain) through a Russian bootleg video streaming site.

She was great in "My First Mister" with Albert Brooks, Leelee Sobieski, Michael McKean, Mary Kay Place, John Goodman, etc. Carol Kane plays the mother of a troubled young woman who finds friendship and respect in the most unlikely of places and Carol is wonderful as the mother. No one could have played her role any better. It is one of the best movies you have never heard of.
The greatest/most brilliant actors, singers, writers, and visual artist are either gone or soon will be. We will NEVER know Greatness again. She's a gem.
