Master Detail Report Page Design with Drillthrough Filter in Power BI

- One of the most common requirements in any reporting solution is the ability to drill through from master page to the details page and see the details of an item or category. In this post, I will explain how this feature is simply possible in Power BI, and what are things to consider when you are implementing such a scenario. The drill-through filter is not a new feature in Power BI, but is it one of the most helpful and wanted features which makes your life much easier for designing reports and visualizations.

Excellent tutorial done with patience and simplicity. Keep sharing.
This is definitely the best video about drill through I've watched. Finally get it. Thank you for sharing
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent Video. Simple and clear.
Really Nice...Simple and easy to follow. Thank you.
Thanks for such a simple explanation
Thank you RADACAD much appreciated
Excellent tutorial. Thanks Reza
Excellent tutorial. Many thanks

Better than Microsoft's own guides!
As they say, its all in the detail! and I must say, its all in the example!
Hi Radcad! I have a use case in which my master page has 2 fields that I want to pass to the details page. One of these fields has multiples values (content) that I want to send as kind of array of values expecting that in the details page it would be used to filter my data. However, it is not working fine. Any suggestion? My use case is like a 1:N (one to many relationship) in which I just want to send a specific subset of data to be applied as a filter. Thanks and have a great week ahead!
Amazing!! Video! Just one question! what use for the lock aspect ratio in the drillthrough page for the given dataset? Again, awesome video and of course your's contribution to PowerBI is amazing.
Lock aspect is a visual design feature. It will lock the ratio of width and height of a visual. It is not related to the drill through feature, it can be done on any visual that you want to lock the ratio of it.
Perfect very elaborative :-)
Do you have any video series on Azure Data Factory?
Thanks very good. I got a question related to Power BI and Performance. Should tables rather be merged in SQL Server and then imported or is importing tables in Power BI and then joining them the better option?
The short answer is: depends. You need to do data preparation at a level at least. but you need to leave a level of data in the Power BI model to still have the flexibility. example; if I have a Product table and product category table, I merge them (either with T-SQL, or Power Query), and bring one product table in Power BI. However, I will not do that with the Fact transactions table. your approach should be doing the star schema.
Waiting for your new content.
Great Tutorial but I want to ask 1 question when you take your cursor on Gender graph new small window pop up I want to understand what is that and How can do this type of thing
That is the report page tooltip. I have written an article about it on radacad.com. a video also will come in the future.
Hi, is there any way to drill down multiple visuals, as we drill one of the visual.
Example: I have three different bar charts with x axis value (which is common in three charts) as company name hierarchy (company name and then product name), one of the chart has revenues as values another has gross margin percentage and last bar chart has cost. Now if I drill down on Revenues bar chart to product level, other two bar charts should also go to product level.
Yes it is. If they share the same hierarchy of fields, when you drill down in one, others will drill down too. there is a checkbox in the Power BI format tab right besides the "edit interaction" that says interaction will work in the drill mode level too
Very good video. Can be created a nested scenario ? I mean: Master calls Detail 1, now Detail1 calls Details2 .. so on ? Is possible ?
Yes as many levels you want
@@RADACAD How? do you have any video ?
@@omarsantamaria6871 just add another drill through page
Is it possible to download your sample report?
When i click on 'High School' Bar.It will be filtering only "HIGH SCHOOL" data.
Is there any possibility to go with the NEXT PAGE with out any Filtering
for that you don't need to use Drillthrough filter. just use bookmarks for the next page, and create a button in the first page to go to that bookmark with no data selection.
Hi, Thanks for the great video...I have a scenario where I have a bar chart in one page showing the no of open loads vs week/year per warehouse ..I have a second page where I have the details of the open loads per week/year of all warehouses.. I have added warehouse as drillthrough filter but it is not working ..can you please suggest what I am doing wrong.
What do you mean by not working? Do you have screenshots you can share?
@@RADACAD Sure..can you please share your mail id so that I can share the screenshots
@@RADACAD Hi any updates to the question I have posted above
@@MrityunjoyBhattacharjee1 you can share your screenshot through any of image sharing websites with us here
@@RADACAD please find the images of the count of open loads with a filter applied on week of the year..however while applying the drill through on warehouse or week of the year the filter on week/year is not working..photos.app.goo.gl/HXFML84dJqRQb6MfA

Can you please have a look and send me some guidance
Nice Video Reza, I have one doubt. Can we restrict the drill through to single visual / single page??
It is up to you how to design your drillthrough page. It can be only one page with one visual of course.
@@RADACAD
Thanks For Quick Response Reza. I really appreciate your work.
Let me put my question in another way. For Example I have country column and two visuals(Say table, column chart) are using Country column in Page1.
Placing the country column in drillthorugh filter of second page will enables drill through option on both the visuals in Page1. What if I don't want to show the drill thorough in one of the visual???
@@moulik2341 I see. Unfortunately not now. You cannot turn it off just for one visual. Hopefully sometimes in the future 😊
@@RADACAD
I think they should enable a toggle switch to show or hide drill through like Tool tip toggle. 😊
