Two things Pat does that everyone should emulate. 1. Use deep breaths to get the horse to relax. 2. Hold the rope on the top so the horse will run into your elbow instead of your shoulder if it runs into you. What did the vaqueros use to sack out the horse back in the day?

Working with a horse requires so much experience ! Watching a video makes it look doable but the actual application is so much more difficult. So many nuances !

Basically you’re helping the horse think the flag isn’t about him which is why we don’t stare them down during this exercise.

Congratulations Deb. That is great news! I wish I had your advice about jogging years ago. I allowed my horse to run into and out of arroyos and up hills for a couple of years. I still have a hard time keeping the horse from running in those circumstances. Great Advice.

Training withbthe flag orvother spooky things is good. The volte is too small for a young horse. Young horses carry their heads outward in tight turns to maintain balance. Particularly good to see when galloping. A trained horse is able to complete even tight turns with the head positioned inwards and to keep the hindquarters in the path of the forehand. Here the tight turn is achieved by pulling on the head and driving the hindquarters. Result: crooked horse, head pulled too far in, forehand inside, shoulder twisted, hindquarters next to the forehand's path. Unfortunately, this is a typical picture when training young horses. It is better to use a round pen for the basics in free work as shown in your other videos.

First, this horse is 6. Second, groundwork is done on the end of a lead rope to teach the horse certain things and to engage the mind. It isn't done to the extent that would affect the horse's ability to navigate a circle without turning his head to the outside. We don't drill our horses for hours on a circle no matter what diameter.
