ALASKA HIGHWAY ROAD TRIP! What is it like to drive the Alaska Highway? Must do places to stop?

  • We are traveling the Alaska Highway in our 2013 Ford Transit Connect micro camper van! We left Dawson Creek, the start of the Alaska Highway, and made our way to Alaska. We were stuck on the Alaska Highway due to an accident for over 8 hours, our tire went flat and we got a cracked windshield but that didn't stop us from having an amazing adventure! We took a soak in the Liard River Hot Springs and added our very own (tiny) sign to the Sign Post Forest along the way.

    Pausing to comment... I am 55 and growing up, Dad was military and he was stationed twice in Alaska, so we had a blue van with an old green trailer and canoe and tent, woodstove, spare tires on the van, and no idea what was in the trailer apart from possibly more camping stuff and GAS CANS. Because the first time we drove it, the entire thing was gravel and the gas stations were very few and far between, and I do believe we had a Mile Post back then too. I know we did for the second time we were stationed there. So those 2 tours = 4 trips on the Alcan. Then in 1995, I drove down, moving out of Alaska after uni, drove with a friend... also had a Mile Post!!! Love the Mile Post. Handy for travelling inside Alaska too... we used it this last summer during our visit. We missed you by two weeks ;-) Anyway, I was just thinking that it is very nice that you do not have to carry gas cans... and this video is going to be a fun one for me. My favorite bits of the trip were actually Ruby Lake and on into Alaska, and then driving down into Palmer, it feels like coming home. The mountains are so familiar to me. Old friends. Someday, I hope my husband and I can do this trip. Although, ideally, I would want to take the Alaskan Ferry for one half and drive the other half. That is a dream of ours. Anyway, off to enjoy the video and will try not to pause to comment too long... but this is fun, seeing Alaska and the highway through your eyes will be a pleasure!

    I was there in August 2022 as well. I just smiled THIS big when I saw how excited you were to see that sign and to be in that place. I felt exactly the same way. It's just the beginning of the most awesome journey ever. If you haven't, try the Dalton Highway. It's the scariest thing ever. My trip from Charleston, West Virginia was 12,800 miles up to Deadhorse, then down to the Kenai Peninsula, back to Vancouver and across the country back home. Road trips are the best thing ever.

    • @mikeandheather
      @mikeandheather  Před rokem

      You are right, seeing that sign was the best feeling ever! It felt like such an accomplishment to get there and the best part was that it was just the beginning.
      We are so envious that you got to drive the Dalton Highway! We looked into doing that as well as the Dempster highway but talked ourselves out of it for fear of our van breaking down and not being able to get home haha But it seems like a fantastic trip and to be able to say you drove to the Arctic Circle is just too cool!
      We talk about regretting not doing it all the time and for sure have to go back one day and do it. To drive all the way from Charleston up the Dempster is incredibly impressive! Congrats, that is an amazing accomplishment!
      Thank you so much for watching, we really do appreciate it!

    2023: we just got back from our Alaska trip and enjoyed you taking us along on your (2022?) trip.
    It was our dog’s 49th State trip.
    Anyway, back to your video: it was great fun to see the same spots you found. We even stayed at the Canadian Superstore in Whitehorse parking lot and agree the road deteriorates north of there. - it shook the door completely off our refrigerator.
    Here’s a tip: Planet Fitness for showers. 10 a month for a single membership but you can take a guest for free.
    Another tip: we are 110% in agreement we are glad we chose the Stewart-Cassiar Highway for our return to the lower 48. A road less traveled for sure but very much worth it. Plus a quick side trip to Hyder was fun.
    Side note: we went through US customs twice and Canadian three times. We didn’t discover until we got back we produced a registration for our car - not our RV. They didn’t notice. Must be our Southern charm?

      @@mikeandheather I seen the video where you discussed the CZcams growth and viewership. With van building being your big hitters, of course that is where I found your channel. I then decided to stay subscribed as I really found your authenticity and genuine enjoyment of this adventure to be enjoyable viewing. There was no hidden motive to be a straight up CZcams funded lifestyle, just a personal use documentary of your journey, and then if it happens it happens. I am personally 3/4 of the way through our 2010 Ford Transit Connect project and I do share your videos with the wife (we are older @ 51), and the wife who claims to not to be 100% on board, but yet I know she is secretly looking forward to the possibilities and this is based on your videos. I just wanted to say, do keep that authenticity with all the giggles and smiles and I know at least I will continue to watch. I know that your journey has ended in real life and then eventually the vblog will end. The pressure will be on to create, but yet I still would say no matter to be proud of what you did as successful and no matter you did you, and you created your own lasting memories.

    Love Tim Hortons! Was born in NY state and moved back as an adult, and used to enjoy TH on trips to Canada, but then they came to the US and that was wonderful! You are making me envious now. // awww wishing we were driving soon so we could look for your cutie pie sign in the sign forest! Great idea for a sign though.// Yay for the animal sightings! Coyote, bison, bear then moose! Hurra! // Aw, cool to stand in two countries at once! And hooray for making it to Alaska! Your excitement reminds me of when I was little and we drove into Alaska for the first time. Oh, side note... if you do this again, or visit Canada, check out something called an E-SIM. I have not used them, but we switched providers right before we left for the states and our phones would not work and apparently were weird phones as I could not find a SIM card in the stores. So I googled and apparently eSIMS are a thing, and one downloads it before you even leave home. So, that is going to be my plan for the next trip, to be safe. And I believe they have them for many places all over the world, including Canada. And then you can have data and use your phones, because... while there were a lot of folks and granted cell can be, or was, spotty along the Alcan, a phone is just a safety thing too nowadays. Anyway, happy trails to you both, Totally envious, SO want to do this some day again. Can't wait for the next videos to come out! 🥰
