- Dato’ Sudirman bin Haji Arshad, or more commonly known mononymously as Sudirman, was a Malaysian famous singer-songwriter who was active from 1976 till 1992. In 1992, he passed away because he was suffering from pneumonia for 7 months.
One of his famous songs that is still remembered by many Malaysians from all walks of life is none other that ‘Bailk Kampung’. I guess it must be the catchy and memorable lyrics that have made this song a great Malaysian classic song. This happens to be my favorite song too and I love singing along to this song whenever I listen to it. This song was written and sung in Malaysian Language. ‘Balik Kampung’ is a song the expresses the joy and excitement of someone who is going back to his/her home/hometown to be with his/her family. It expresses the same joy and excitement in ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ by John Denver. ‘Balik’ means to go back to something/someone/somewhere whereas ‘kampung’ can mean ‘home’, ‘hometown’ or ‘village’, depending on context. This song is commonly played by radio stations in Malaysia before and during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival (Eid al-Fitr). Initially, this song was not written for this festival. However, it eventually became a Hari Raya Aidilfitri song. This is because a few days before this festival, a lot of people who celebrate this festival would go back to their homes/hometowns to celebrate this festival with their families, relatives and friends. To me, I don’t just see this as a Hari Raya Aidilfitri song, but it is a song about being joyful and excited about going back home.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri, or better know as Eid al-Fitr internationally, is one of the major festivals celebrated in Malaysia and it is observed by the Muslim community in Malaysia. Although it is usually celebrated by the Muslim community here, a lot of people from other faiths do usually join in the festivities of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. During this festival, the Muslim community here would have open houses in which they would invite their relatives and friends of different ethnicities & faiths over to their homes for a feast and a get together. Malaysia is a multiracial and multireligious country, and during major festivals like Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavalli/Diwali, Hari Gawai, Hari Kaamatan and Christmas, it is common to see Malaysians from different ethnic and faith groups celebrating these festivals together. Personally, I'm a Christian but during this festival, I do enjoy feasting and getting together with my friends who celebrate it. I also do love all the scrumptious food and delicacies that are prepared during this festival.
