    This is me exactly 2 days ago. I went to a Korean restaurant thinking I would order stuff in korean. Then right when he asked me if we are ready to order I realized I couldn't speak! turned out switching to ordering in english instead. My husband said I was an epic fail. LOL..

      Did the waiter ask you in Korean?

    • @angele09luv
      @angele09luv Před 5 lety +17

      Lol try its ok just try again next time. I would first ask if they can speak Korean and then ask if it is alright to practice. "안녕하세요, 혹시 한국어 할 줄 알아요? 한국어 연습해도 되나요? " and if they say yes proceed to order. But remember it is ok to stumble don't feel bad. Personally I don't like ordering in Korean but my mother loves it when I do it so I try to ask the waiter if they speak korean and if I can practice. Most of the time if I just straight out order in korean they just go "oh you speak korean so well" but continue to speak in english which for some reason makes me feel embarrassed for even attempting to speak korean hahaha. I am not fluent and still make plenty of mistakes but each time I do it I get better so keep that in mind for next time.

    This video is really relatable for me. I've been learning Korean on and off with TTMIK for a while now and aside from being more consistent with my studying, I think the main thing I'm lacking is the confidence to try using what I've learned in real life. Whenever I'm at a Korean restaurant, my girlfriend (who knows I'm learning Korean) tells me I should try ordering in Korean. I always refuse and say I don't know how to yet. The thing is, I'm 99% sure I know how to order food at a restaurant in Korean, but for some reason whenever I'm actually there, I suddenly start worrying that whatever I think I know is actually wrong and if I try I'll just make a fool of myself. I'm lucky to live in a city where there are lots of Korean immigrants. If I could just gain the confidence to try speaking Korean and to let people know I'm learning, I think I would probably be a lot more advanced in my speaking ability than I am now.

    • @jeanjaz
      @jeanjaz Před 5 lety +5

      I hope you can keep going with your friend, but you probably need to work on your pronunciation more on your own as well as with your friend.
      TTMIK has several videos on the sounds that are harder for English speakers. They tell where to put your tongue and how it is different from English.
      Also, record yourself in your phone and play it back to hear what you actually sound like. Our ears will actually deceive us - this is something speech pathologists know, so they use a tape recorder to help their patients hear themselves.
      I use several language apps. One I like for Korean is Memrise. It has a "Pronunciation" section that records your Korean words and "Grades" them. Duolingo is another popular app and it might have the same recording practice section too.
      Don't get too wound up on pronouncing Korean perfectly at first. Just converse with your friend. Your pronunciation will improve as you get comfortable and your ear will get better at telling the sounds apart when you HAVE to tell different words apart that your friend says. :)
      Don't give up!
      "Monolingualism can be cured!"

  • @kireidoll
    @kireidoll Před 3 lety +1

    For the first few months in korea, i had to resolve myself to work solely on my pronunciation, as absolutely no one could understand me (I have more of a Japanese accent, yet they usually understand them. But a Japanese accent on a white face isn't familiar lol). Even buying a coffee was difficult? After months taking it in, and becoming much better at pronouncing correctly, to my surprise, the reaction I got from the natives was about the same: if it wasn't a perfect native level they didn't understand what I was saying. Even people who speak other languages, but rarely meet foreigners who speak korean, usually did a (?o?) face then repeated the exact thing one just said as they finally understood. Motivation = down.
    So after 1 year and 3 months in korea, I did understand korean much better, but I barely spoke because spending that long not being understood tore me down and made me feel I'll never be able to speak korean. Yet Japanese was so easy for me to learn, and I've never had problems being understood. Such a strange experience.
    Anyone else in Korea to whom the same happened?

I have Korean friends from university but now that we all graduated it's very difficult to meet up since we now work in different parts of the city. But I'm glad that I found a friend online through Hello Talk! I'm helping her learn English and she's helping me with Korean. We set up a schedule and talk for hours on both languages. I really do have to practice more because I'm still not confident. I tend to switch in English when it gets difficult. Yes, yes, and yes! I was at that stage about 7 years ago. Especially when I was used to texting friends, I could formulate perfect sentences because I had the time to think about it. But when you're having a conversation, you don't really have time to just stop and think every time you want to make a sentence. Also, when I first met my spouse, that was when I realized that I knew very basic Korean but not enough to have conversations, so I spent about a year learning new vocabulary words and grammar points. I will say that in a year's time, that motivation to speak to my spouse was what helped me grow tremendously. It was a great motivator. That's when I found myself walking around my house talking to myself in Korean. I would have imaginary situations, and think about how I'd act in those situations. So like our friend Shia likes to say, "Just do it!"

    • @ianpolitano07
      @ianpolitano07 Před 5 lety

      I will also add, that I lived in Korea for 5 years, and during my time there, I was really shy at first to speak Korean in public because people would stare at me. Everyone would stare and listen to my conversations, which added pressure. I eventually stopped caring because it was prohibiting me from having conversations with my friends in public and made me far more nervous than I needed to be. I was always scared that I was gonna make a mistake and people would laugh about it, or think he's bad at Korean. Once I stopped letting that fear dictate my life, I improved significantly too.

    One thing that I do with when I watch a video where they show a word or phrase, then say it out loud, is to pause it before the point where it’s said out loud. I read what’s displayed out loud, then I hit play and compare, rewinding to repeat as necessary. I still have a long way to go, but at least I’m improving. The parts that usually trip me up are the batchim, since I still tend to read each syllable literally 😄

    This is really one of the best CZcams channels on Korean! Thank you so much for this simple yet effective piece of advice. I've been doing the daily reading training but not out loud, so I guess actually speaking by myself will give me the confidence I lack in Korean :D

    I think this is the common mistakes that many learners including me always make, too much input like reading and listening and also memorizing vocabularies, but to be honest, I haven’t met any Korean friends haven’t practice my Korean with native speakers , and now I know that memorizing vocabularies won’t help when it comes to forming a sentence or when I have to speak with a Korean, memorizing vocabs didn’t help without a clear goal or aim.
    Maybe I think using the sentences that I have already know to practice more would be more sufficient. To rehearse to myself for future preparation to speak with a native speakers would be more beneficial.

    THANK you for making these CZcams videos available to those who can't buy the books!
    I've studied several languages - mostly in the 80s and 90s.
    I think young people have SO many wonderful inexpensive and free tools for learning a language now. It's so amazing! (I'm 60).
    Just a couple exercises I found that have helped me in French (I've only recently started Korean, so not enough vocab yet).
    Write letters to your friends, your parent, your teacher, the President - whoever. [I like using my phone to write words because my 한글 is very messy. (I do practice my writing tho)]
    I don't mail these letters. Lol. But I read them aloud a couple times and then record myself with my phone. I usually end up doing it several times, trying to get faster and better pronunciation.
    With French, I also memorized children's songs. They have a lot on CZcams. I haven't checked to see if there are Korean children's songs on CZcams yet, but there probably is.
    Anyway, this is an exercise that helped me move "recognition vocabulary" to "active vocabulary" without getting too discouraged.
    It helped me with French and Hebrew, and when I get far enough, I'll be using it for Korean too. :)

    I think Koreans in general are very encouraging to people who learn their language so that has given me soooo much confidence even if a lot of grammar structures or words flew out my brain they would still to me 넌 한국어 잘해!! I think a lot of Koreans also know that their language is tough. All of my Korean friends have said to me. Thank you so much for learning our language. All Koreans will really appreciate you learning our language and it is also super tough so keep it up!

I thought it would be best to do in the order of improving writing, reading, listening and at last speaking. However, after watching this video I will incorporate speaking practices in my study session so, that I can reach my goal quicker. Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated! 감사합니다 선생님!

    Thank you Hyunwoo, these tips make a lot of sense.
    I’ve started an Instagram account purely to make short Korean speaking videos on for practise & I’ve noticed that the sentences & new vocabulary that I’ve recorded on there are the ones that I’m most confident in because I rehearsed it before I recorded it. I think I need to do much more of that.

Now I know I’ve been on the right track with talking to myself and creating my own sentences!

    Those are all awesome suggestions. Fortunately, every Korean I have ever met has been ecstatic that I'm even trying to speak the language. So I think it's important in those situations to remember that languages can be understood even with lots of mistakes. If someone doesn't understand, they'll say so. Otherwise, my advise is to just plow ahead even as you hear yourself make errors.

    Another thing that I do, which I also find helpful or you can simulate the environment is actually to listen to Korean whenever possible, it can be podcasts, radios, CZcams, songs, drama whatever it is you are doing, try to listen as much as possible - Just let it run in the background for me at least that way it gives me the feeling of being used to listen to Korean even though I do not understand it or much, but it will help you later when you want to start to decipher and learn more.

    I lived in Korea for a year and went to a Korean high school, and I lacked confidence A LOT. It was difficult for me since I have such a shy nature and I wanted to have deeper conversations with my friends and family. I studied a lot on my own with TTMIK for almost 5 years and I felt like a fraud when my host family, friends and even when I went shopping, the employees said my korean was pretty good. Till this day, I still am very shy but I would say that many Koreans are so nice and encouraging and appreciate the effort even just by taking interest in Korean. You just gotta believe in yourself because it can be discouraging sometimes. Most of my practice with speaking was with the employee’s at this clothing store that I knew for months when I was in Korea. They didn’t know ANY english but they were so kind and encouraging, constantly reassured me and motivated me. Anyone can do it! I wish everyone luck on their studies and have fun with it!

    I meet with a Korean teacher once a week online (minus some sick days, holidays or work conflicts). Unfortunately there is no Korea Town in Florida. About the only opportunity I get to practice in the real world with a native is at a Korean BBQ restaurant, but those visits are few and far in between because it sure isn't cheap *sigh*. I gotta thank TTMK. I reached out a few months back noting so many non natives speaking fluently because they were lucky enough to be able to be in Korea long term and experience total submersion. Most of us, the internet workbook study guide crowd, have to work a bit harder and definitely longer. TTMK basically encouraged me to just hang in there. We all have different situations, but practice and you will improve. This video is spot on. I know I have the vocabulary and grammar to use more Korean at the restaurants, but I'm just to nervous. I know these tips will help. Thanks again.

    One of the most important things I've learnt as an adult learner is that it's very normal for adult learners to be unconfident in speaking new languages. Shame is a huge factor towards this and one of the biggest hurdles to get past. All of my language teachers have encouraged me to just say as much as I can and try not to second guess what I think is correct because you typically know more than you think. It's totally okay to get things wrong and learning how to create work arounds (like gestures, descriptions, associated words) is actually a great way to explore your abilities in adapting. Personally, I still struggle a lot with speaking but I also know that it can take me a while to get that part of my brain going but I'm much better after a few mistakes.
