I can totally relate to this. But you know what helped me a lot is allowing myself to be a beginner. Even when I have a whole degree in fine arts, I have allowed myself to be a beginner and this has worked like magic. Also, creating and anonymous art account also helps. If you wanna get back in making art which I think you should, consider going through " The natural way to draw" by Kimon Nicolaides. I believe it can help!!

From somebody who has gone through similar processes (4 years of very disappointing uni) - I can assure you that it does get better with time! It really does, even if you feel artistically clogged currently, it will air out eventually and your association of art/creating with your university experience will go away. When you've gone through enough experiences with art, they would eventually replace this feeling of dread that "university trauma" brings to drawing. You will have gathered enough new memories and recovered your previous or gained new art memories that would make uni seem like a tiny fly that was only there but for a moment! Communicating with like-minded artists also helps a lot, if possible.
Be patient, friends, and give yourselves time to breathe and don't stop drawing, it is worth it!

I have a chronic illness and that bad feeling that I'll die young, all my family did. So everyday and every drawing counts. Lately I've discover roleplaying games, my passion for art is at the top, all my studies are with the party characters and the best scenes. I've started a passion project aside from my regular jobs and my life has improved a lot. Now I have motivation to take better care of my health. It's really difficult to take care of yourself when your mind is at a bad place, and I'm glad I'm leaving that bad place. I wish the same for my fellow artists, keep fighting!

I love that an influencial artist like you takes on the challenge to talk about these things! "Only when you finally get sick of suffering, you'll start to make the changes you need", is what a beloved teacher once told me.
I went to a similar thing when I realized that my live choices were the cause of my arthritis. I informed myself, went to dozens of doctors (who couldn't or wouldn't help me), read all about it I could find ... Now here I am, not needing any medicine, almost completely symptom-free just by living healthily.
But boy do people feel the need to tell me that what I'm doing can't be working, while they sit on the couch all day eating fast food. It's unfortunate that people tend to wait until their body gives in, but maybe that's just how we learn.

    • @skepticalpanda8862
      @skepticalpanda8862 Před 7 měsíci +4

I hate that concept. It always sounds like an excuse people use to leave people in suffering instead of actually doing any thing meaningful to help. It also places the blame and burden of seeking care for things like mental illness on people who may be suffering in ways where seeking help is not that easy due to both societal stigma and internal feelings of worthlessness.. Not to be weird but this hyperindividualist view is probbaly doing very little to help the rising rates of mental illness and the worst outcomes of that illness... Ending ones life to escape the suffering, People always forget that "getting sick of suffering" results in that too.

@@skepticalpanda8862 I am genuinely curious as to what you would recommend people do then for those suffering individuals. How do you help someone who feels "societal stigma [or] internal feelings of worthlessness"? I cannot begin to imagine what someone with mental illness is going thru, but your comment begs the question of who then is accountable for their healing? I would think there has to be a point where they themselves have to be willing to seek/accept help no matter what society may or may not think of them.

Dude, I'm 42 will be 43 in January. I needed to hear this today. I used to be a martial artist, won tournaments, kata, fights, etc. I gave it up along with my graphic design when life hit me hard. Ever since I fell deeper into only playing video games and working. Last year I finally decided to get back into design and drawing. Its been challenging, up and down with confidence. I'll never have a career, but I do enjoy it. Health has been declining combined with struggling with Tourette's, a life long battle. Proper sleep has also been an elusive victory. I will say though that you along with a few others have been a great inspiration to help keep me going when I want to say forget it. I may even start using my own dust covered bike as well. Mindset really seems to be where it all starts. Thank you for always having a positive message.

I've been struggling with a lot in life just because I'm autistic (I'm a woman that never got a diagnosis and still on a waitlist for one) , but since fully embracing my autism and learning about it by myself I've been slowly recovering a sense of who I am again. Which has brought me back to watching you again - Im an artist and Im trying to reconnect with my passion for art. Your videos are so comforting. I relate a lot with your journey, how you found solutions to your own health problems. My whole life my mental health has been unpredictable and messy, but wasn't until I decided to do my own research did I begin to understand and learn how to balance and regulate my brain - and guess what? a lot of it was just to listen to my body and mind, listen to what it needs. Hearing you go through your own health problems and dealing with it despite the push backs is so encouraging. We can get our lives back. It's a hard lesson to learn, but you can't wait on someone to save you, you need to become the person who can save you.

Loved the video! And I would like to add some extra tips for people with ADHD. I've not been diagnoised offically but I have a suspision I've got it, so out of curiousity I learnt about some tips which could possiblily make my days easier, how to be more organized and such. First of all, I 100% agree with fixing your SLEEP, it is so important to be well rested, so you can focus better on your work or studies! EXERCISE is also extremly important, to keep your body and your mind healthy.
So, my tip is: I heard about this method of having 3 types of daily routine set for yourself: 1. the ideal daily routine 2. the chill daily routine (slightly easier than the ideal) 3. the daily routine for days when you just don't feel like doing anything, aka the minimum daily routine. I am pretty sure most people deal with those kind of days sometimes. The main point of this is you do not need to expect yourself to be your very best self every day, you do not need to pressure yourself to fit this super ideal daily routine every day. Maybe it's your goal to reach that level, and that is great, keep at it! I am here to tell you, it's okay to take it easy sometimes. And if you want to make progress every day, even on the bad days, you have to prioritize what is the bare minimum you must to do in a day. If you must do work or study, just shorten the time, do an hour or two less, and prioritize your self care, and your needs, it is OK. Maybe the next day, you wake up revitalized, fresh and your mind is a lot sharper and maybe you are even able to catch up on things much faster. You are avoiding burn out. You are doing better, because you let yourself REST. This is not procrastination, do not forget that your needs matter! Be kind to yourself! I hope someone finds this useful! I wish all of you the best! ❤

Thank you for posting this. It is extremely relevant to me, at 67 years old and facing my 4th joint replacement in a few days. I've suddenly been having sciatica type pain and have been searching for CZcams wisdom regarding that. I found El Paso Therapy (or whatever it was called) last night and have set myself on a mission to do as much of the exercises for as long as possible before my surgery (and after). I've been doing everything I can to get as strong and healthy as possible prior to this surgery - tons of pool time because my body is so full of arthritis that there is no longer any hiking, volleyball, softball, or any other sport I loved to do that kept me physically fit. I cycle when I can, but I live on top of a very steep hill and the thought of lugging my bike up that hill is too much for me. At any rate, you have some very sound and true advice, that I can modify for my particular needs. I am going to check out that Dr.'s channel as well. And I think I will invest in a full spectrum light. We are coming into winter and on the northwest coast that means for short days. At any rate, you rock! You make me feel less alone in my journey. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

As someone that has quit their job recently as my sleep was in the 4 hour range, and I knew it was eating at me, though the sleep alone is definitely not all I need. The reality is that I need to focus on balance as well, it's almost like I've been sleeping too much in the last month since I quite because it's like I needed to catch up, but I just need to start exercising, and regulating that sleep in a consistent manner, as you said, balance. At least it's become very apparent to me with what you've talked about here, so thank you.

It truly is a journey and after incorporating the word "No" back into my life over the past year and learning to not overwork myself every single day, I'm going to take it a step further and reduce my working hours at school altogether (IF they let me... it's not that easy because of the teacher shortage but I'll try at least). for awhile in Canada, the animation industry has what i feel been a shit show. Almost no job postings and a bunch of tv shows being uncontinued. My friends in the industry have been struggling to find work in 2D animation for so long and it all seems so bleek. I was forced to grab just any sort of aniamtion job just to pay the bills. I've been at this company working on projects I don't care about for so long now with no other place to go to and i found my health declining because I force myself to keep up with the constant crunch culture and unpaid overtime.
I love watching your videos while i work because it lets me think about the idea of doing art that motivates me again.

Wow, just wow. I absolutely love your holistic approach to creativity and art. So often we forget all the other factors that go into producing good art and just focus on producing... then wonder why we're struggling with burnout. This was so timely as I've been focussing on mental outlook and character/spiritual development, with an eye on how simply walking for an hour each morning has been affecting my emotional wellbeing. There is a lot of sh*t that goes into what make us tick as human beings, and the rat race just wants to take our eyes off what's important. You offer juicy stuff for those that are ready to listen ❤

It’s always those who work the hardest and give their best, that get those kind of treatment when they say that enough is enough. Adam, exercise as simple as a 30 minute walk a day can do anyone wonders and it’s a great gateway into building exercise habits in the future. Learning about how to get proper sleep and giving your body enough time to wake up prior to drinking coffee, about an hour and a half minimum, is also extremely important. All of these things including Meditation completely saved me from depression. Also fun fact, if you get sunlight into your eyes when the sun is setting it will slightly help to offset the effect of light you intake during the evening hours. I love your channel and I am so incredibly grateful to have you to talk about these issues. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Adam this is amazing, I'm also an artist and earlier this year I started to exactly the same morning routine! On the morning light exposure topic, I made it work trough a new found passion - raising chickens in my garden - I have to get up to open their doors, feed them and check for eggs, this already gives me the sun exposure but also a pretty sweet transition from half a sleep to super motivated for my workout.
After wrapping my work day I have to go back and close the doors, check for eggs and make a count - this is a nice checkpoint to clock out my work day, specially working from home all the time.
Thank your shared wisdom as always!

I just found a video about glutes and why my hips hurt. It is not how i walk it is how strong my glutes are. And replacing my old furniture for ergonomic chairs and sofa so i can sit and paint and still be able to get up and walk. I live in a small town and love the idea of a bike. Winter is starting here, so come spring my husband and I are going to get bikes.

I was able to work from home for the last few years, and i used to go for a walk (and some light jogging) during my lunch break. I usually come back more focused and energized.
However, when i get busy or feel overwhelmed, that's the first thing to go. The past few months I've been very inconsistent with it. But recently, we've been required to go back into the office 2 (soon to be 3) days a week, where i won't be able to do my walks.
I know i need to get back to it, especially because now i can't do it every day. This video was a good kick in my rear.

    Hi Adam,
I'm really glad that you addressed all these issues in this video. I used to spend a ton of time in front of the computer at work, then did the same at home, learning new things, and I attached little importance to taking care of sleep, mental health, and my physical condition. Of course, I considered myself a healthy person, had a varying amount of physical activity, but the truth was that things were getting worse for me. It resulted in two serious illnesses and two surgeries. But fortunately, I somehow woke up in time. I exercise every day now, walk, pay more attention to my diet, and the quality of sleep. I've always dreamed of working in a studio on films or games, and here comes the question. Is it worth pursuing this, or should I somehow modify my goals so as not to accidentally destroy my health? Certainly, the answer won't be easy, but I hope I'll come up with something :D

Hi Adam, I wanted to say another genuine thank you for sharing your videos. Last month, I was diagnosed with MS at 23. It's really hard to not be afraid for what this means for both my future health and career as an artist. Though, I remembered back to a video you put out recently about taking your health into your hands and learning as much as you can. It gave me the empowerment I needed in a really uncertain time. Not surprisingly, all the things you mentioned in this video about bettering your general health are crucial in slowing down the progression of flares and the disease. It's only been a few weeks taking things likes an exercise routine seriously but I'm already feeling the benefits!

Countless people in my life told me to sleep better but Ive always just dismissed it, thinking sacrificing sleep hours for work or even just rest is worth it. If i do think about it my life became EXACTLY the way you mentioned (being a fraction of what I could’ve been, bearable but not at all great) about when I stopped putting care into sleeping well. Although it will be hard it wont hurt to try to improve my sleep schedule! This is a very simple but exact solution I needed that was in front of me this whole time.
