Snufkin's thoughts on freedom - Finnish dub (w/ English subtitles) - The Moomins

- A clip from episode 81, in which a prophet comes to Moominvalley and tells everyone to begin a new, free life. In this clip Moomintroll wants to know what freedom is like, so he asks about it from Moominmamma and Snufkin.
Episodes 79 - 104 are a part of the "second series" of Tanoshii Moomin Ikka; Bouken Nikki. These episodes were never dubbed in English and have never been remastered. Fans of the series often mock Bouken Nikki for it's poor storytelling and inferior animation. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

In the pre-70s official newspaper comics by Tove's brother Lars Moomintroll gives Snufkin a flower and when My asks him (Moomin) about it he goes all blush 😂
I've always thought it was the other way around, that it was primarily Moomin who wanted Snufkin. As someone who made a youtube video on the subject said: "The relationship between Moomin is and Snufkin is basically Moomin going "Notice me senpai! >
"Perhaps you are not always happy even if you are free" Damn. I'm not sure if it is, but it sounds kinda deep
Freedom to screw up basically. But thats a good question. I like freedom though, but very clever said in my view
*I like how Snufkin is smiling when Moomin says he don't care about Snorkmaiden lmao*
Also this scene reminds me of that one comic strip where Moomin says something like "What is duty really?"
And Snufkin says "Doing what you don't want to."
sameee xD

“Poor fools”
@Masticatious I'm even straight and I like this kind of thing, but finally, I have to admit that it's not going to happen and that even if it's cute, they're both the best friends I've ever seen, Moomin is Snufkin's first friend and vice versa, they happen affection and it is love but not of that type, finally you have to learn to respect the opinion of others or it may seem silly.
I think this episode is actually based on that strip
@@gabrielam6753 i don't know how old Snuffkin is, but Moomin is just a child anyway. i can't fathom the need to make "ships" out of everyone out there.. these people should just watch yaoi or shounen-ai.

that Snufkin is intriguing.
Moominmamma's finnish voice is one of the best things in cartoons ever 🧡
Tove Jansson based the character of Snufkin on her friend and one-time fiancé Atos Kasimir Wirtanen (27 January 1906 in Saltvik - 10 March 1979) who was a Finnish socialist intellectual, journalist, member of Finnish parliament (1936-1953) and cultural critic.
She also based Too-Ticky on her girlfriend Tuulikki.
And there's an anime called Bleach, where one of the main characters, Urahara Kisuke, was inspired by the character of Snufkin. So this Atos Kasimir Wirtanen guy unknowingly inspired so many characters in art... It's true what they say I guess, when a writer loves you - you can never die
The punchline in the end... That is what I needed.

I think freedom means that you are able to do whatever you want as long as you exercising your freedoms doesn't take away the others' ability to excersice theirs.
Very good Jami. Keep up the good work.
So freedom isn't completely free, it has restrictions? No, freedom has the freedom to not be what you say it is.

Ask Snufkin, the expert on freedom.
The Finnish voice sounds like he might be the same as in the Swedish version speaking in Finlandssvenska
For Muumipeikko? I think so. But Nuuskamuikkunen is not the same.

"With freedom comes responsibility"
Only corrupt or irresponsible people dont want freedom
Children can't do everything they want, but this seems like commie indoctrination to me
Unto my experience, it's actually the other way around: Freedom needs to be tempered with responsibility and only corrupt and/or irresponsible people want absolute freedom.
@@GrahamChapman absolute freedom requires responsibility, subjugation in society requires only obedience. And irresponsible people don't want freedom, they want a society they can take advantage of and use for them. And corrupt people exist regardless of the system, it's human nature. "Evil prevails when good men do nothing"
@@That_1_Bohemian Good and evil are highly subjective, "moral relativism" and all that, so a better quote would actually be "Corruption prevails when honest people do nothing." That nitpick aside, surely you realize that when dealing with corrupt people and those who seek the "freedom" to take advantage of the world around them (or just plain want to have the "freedom" to be racist or LGBTphobic or otherwise intolerant in some capacity without having to fear repercussions) the subjugation and enforced obedience of those people will be necessary in order to preserve the freedom of the people they wish to abuse or exploit.
Btw, for as often as I see people like you make these "excuses", for lack of a better word, along the lines of "corrupt people exist regardless of the system, it's human nature" (a questionable assertion to say the least, especially if we're talking about systems) I seldom see any of you argue the opposite, that "the pursuit to stamp out and be rid of corruption is a part of human nature." Why is that? I mean, if the latter was not more true than the former, then child labour would still be legal in the entire civilized world y'know. And shutting one's mouth in regards to the fact that the struggle against corruption is a more prevalent part of human nature than the corruption itself is just strikes me as disempowering.
Actually Freedom is fine if it feels earned. I guess abusing it and making..well people stupid is what i dont appreciate about it. I tend to have a motto for that.
1: Dont be Terminally Online
2: Go to school and learn a skill.
But if you work because you have passion in it. work ethics and overall have a proper understanding. Then i find it good. I guess i like freedom mostly interms of weekends or holidays, i dont think i would like it if had free all the time in weekdays. That wouldnt feel earned or fulfilling.
I wonder, do Moomins go to school?.
But this is a nice philosophical question. I guess i think freedom is good when it feels earned, like schools in weekdays or depending if you work. Then weekend or holidays feel earned to me and i like to enjoy it when it comes to those days. But if i had free all the time then i dont find it quite enjoyable.
Snorkmaiden basically encouraged moomintroll to start relationship with Snufkin ”I’m going to find a new man” and ”you should look for a new life too” It seems like Snufkin got it but not moomin 😂🤭
Honestly it's so hard to see those two as just friends ;w;
Wtf is your point. 😅😅 It was just a reminder. I dont see Moomin or Snufkin being gay in any way.
Like just not.
@@Wenixi it’s called fandom and it’s real. You don’t have to like it but it’s still there and you can’t change that 😄 and the reason why this fandom is so popular is most likely because it is based on real people and their relationship. Moomin represents Tove Jansson, original author of the moomins and Snufkin is based on Atos Wirtanen who was her boyfriend at time. Moomins admiration and thoughts about Snufkin are based on Tove’s thoughts about Atos. After they broke up Tove started to date mostly women so she was gay herself too.
@@Snofey1 Well it hasn't ever been confirmed what is canon and what is not. Snufkins and Moomins relationship is inspired by Toves own relationship, but the key word is *inspired* it's not necessarily completely same as Toves irl relationship. Snufkins and Moomins relationship has been left open-ended, and it't left for the audience to decide what they wan't to believe in.

@@joseanurkkalainen2832 Well it can't be denied that there are purposely some gay undertones in their relationship. But still yes, they definatelly don't need to get together and there still is no evidence of what really is canon. @@sandwichmaker1289 oh that's so so cool!!! Thanks for telling me!!!
It was strangely satisfying to hear Moomim say that about Snorkmaiden. She is literally the worst character in the entire series, she is not interesting in any way, shape, or form, yet the writers insisted on putting her in so many episodes.
Have to disagree. One of the best characters in the series in my opinion!
@@sumppi1 since they said how much they don't like her, how about why you do?
@@funandlala You mean why I like her? Well, she's extremely funny, she has very nice personality and of course she's Moomintroll's girlfriend! In the Finnish version (original) she's also got a very good voice actor! That's the version I've watched.
Well, she doesn’t fit in modern time as well as other female characters but in my opinion she’s not that typical cute love interest character either. She can be pretty mean when she’s angry and she wants to take care of her friends.
I really like her. She's very supportive of her friends and family, her interactions with others add to the story well and her hopeless romantic/dreamer personality is funny and relatable
It’s not a ‘Finnish dub’ because the show is originally in Finnish Not English so the English version is a dub but the Finnish one isn’t since it’s the original
This anime was originally in Japanese so the Finnish version is also a dub.
But the show was made in Japan. The Finnish dub was made after the original Japanese version. The Moomins are from Finland, yes, but this specific show was animated and produced in Japan.
@@removemouth7484 fuji television!!! if im not mistaken :p
@@removemouth7484 so that would make this show an anime.
@@gaving.griffon2703 Basically it was thanks to ''Dennis Livson'' that we got this version of moomins. The first moomins japanese made was ''Sh*t'' according to Tove, so she said she would not allow to make new moomins show. Dennis Livson came and presuaded her to try one more time to make a show from moomins and this is it. Dennis also produced ''Alfred J Kwak''.
English dub will never sound right to me:/
Why is moomin a anime?
what do you mean?
the Moomins has been animated several ocassions, several styles everything from stop-motion, marionette puppets to 3D and by several different parties. west germany, Japanese, Soviet union, Austria,Germany,Poland etc did their own versions in 60-70s, french and british in the 2010s + obvsly finnish and swedes also has adapted it several times over decades
This version is "Tanoshii Mūmin Ikka" or "Muumilaakson tarinoita" (or in english just "Moomin") which is maybe currently the most famous one. It is from the 90s and is i think a dutch-japanese-finnish production.
So I'd say it looks like anime because japanese animators did it :D
There was lots of outsourcing during those days. But its more or less cartoon i think? Isnt that what one call something produced in a country?. Example is Inspector Gadget cartoon from the 80s. Animation got outsourced to Japan and Korea, but its considered a cartoon because the production happend in USA
Because its animated in Japan.
Japan animated stories Finnish woman wrote in 30s or something.
I forgot snorkmaiden sounded so posh and annoying
All the people trying to "ship" these two together are disgusting. Not only for trying to twist a wholesome friendship in a children's cartoon into some sort of sexual fantasy, but it's even worse considering Moomintroll is a f*cking _child_ and Snufkin is a lot older. Every moomin "shipper" should be ashamed of themselves.
Tove Jansson based the character of Snufkin on his former boyfriend, with whom he remained as friends. Meanwhile, Moomin himself is basically a self-insert for Tove, who had to hide her love for another woman for most of her life. I'm not shipping any characters, but the fact of the matter is, the character dynamic between Moomin and Snufkin IS actually partially based on a similar, romantic tension between two actual people of the same gender. There's also more to it, as Snufkin leaving Moomin valley for winter only to return in the spring is an allusion to Tove's aforementioned former lover being away for long periods of time at once.
Whether Tove actually intended the characters to have romantical feelings or an actual romantic relationship is one thing, but they're still supposed to represent Tove's love life. Similarly, the characters of Thingumy and Bob are based on Tove and her female partner, Vivica Bandler. Their original Swedish names are Tofslan (=Tove) and Vifslan (=Vivica.) So, needless to say, allusions to Tove's own, personal experiences with love and sexuality are undeniably sprinkled in the story in the form of characters and their dynamics. Whether the characters are actual lovers or anything like that is certainly up to interpretation, but surely you admit there are actual basis for shipping these characters, no? It doesn't just come out of nowhere, nor is it somehow particularly uncharacteristic either.
Also, the ages of the characters is never specified, so if you see Moomin as a child but Snufkin as an adult, that's on you. Generally people seem to view them both as being relatively close to each other's age, with Snufkin being slightly older. There are even some details suggesting both might be young adults. In the original comic book, Moomin was living on his own before he was reunited with his lost parents. Granted, the 90's animation did give Moomin a younger "look" in form of voice and his behaviour, but in the source material he was a bit more mature. Either way, it doesn't really matter, since Tove never gave any literal age for them. And again, they're representative of Tove and her former lover either way. (Altough I gotta say, I've never heard anyone call Snufkin an adult and saying their relationship would be inappropriate as a result. Ironic, that the first person who went there is someone who considers shipping them as a negative thing. Wonder why you thought of that, specifically?)
That being said, why is it that you feel so negatively about someone imagining romantic tension between these characters in the first place? I'd assume, considering you're whining about shipping characters, that it isn't because it's in conflict with your preferred ships.
Also, worth noting is that 'shipping' is not the same as 'sexual fantasy'. Some people like characters and view them as their individual personalities. Thinking that two of them would be a good fit romantically, or going as "far" as actually imagining them as such, is not the same thing as jerking off to the thought of them engaging in steamy, unhinged sex acts. Again, that's on you, dude.
@@sove3566 No, that's nothing more than your personal assumptions and bullshit based on wanting to believe something. Tove wrote _children's books._ Some of the characters are based on actual people, but the only "romantic tension" was written between Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden, and even with them it's at a very childish level. Stop trying to defend twisted people who fantasise about illegal things.
@@user-oo8oj1hl8k No assumptions here, everything I said is based on what Tove herself said, aside from the age of the characters, which, again, is debatable. Also, as I said, I don't specifically WANT to see anything there, I'm largely indifferent to shipping. I'm merely stating what's true, and that personal interpretation regarding their possibly romantic relationship isn't completely unfounded, as you seem to think.
Also, yes, she wrote children's books. That's why there's nothing explicit. You know, aside from drinking, doing opium and stuff, but it was a different time. (You know, a time when same-sex couples couldn't be depicted, but also when people weren't so hung up about age differences now seen as inappopriate.) But romantic tension isn't anything inappropriate in itself. If you see same-sex romantic tension as being somehow 'twisted', that tells quite a bit about your views.
@@sove3566 It is very clear that Moomintroll is supposed to be a young child, given how he runs to his mother for help and generally acts in a very childlike manner. Just because Tove based characters on real people doesn't mean she ever intended any romance there. And it is also very clear she didn't since she went and did that with Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden, although again the "romance" between them is elementary school kid -level. The people "shipping" children together with older people are morally bankrupt perverts at best. I think the fact that you're trying to defend such relations tells something about you instead. Mainly that you probably shouldn't be let within 200 metres of any school zone.
@@user-oo8oj1hl8k true. Seeing sexual tensions between any genuine male friendships or brotherhood is such a modernist sex-crazed phenomenon. Over-sexualisation is decaying the minds of people.
Not really Finnish "dub" if it's the original voice...
Actually the 1990-1992 cartoon was made in Japan and thus the moomins talk Japanese in the original.
