- I HAVE WANTED TO BUY OR BUILD A HYDRAULIC SHOP PRESS FOR YEARS BUT NEVER NEEDED IT ENOUGH TO TAKE THE TIME AWAY FROM OTHER WORK. WELL, THE TIME HAS COME. SURE I COULD GO BUY ONE FROM HORRIBLE FREIGHT, FIND A USED ONE OR BUY A NICE NEW GOOD QUALITY ONE. I DONT LIKE HARBOR FREIGHT, NEVER FOUND THE RIGHT SIZE OR CAPACITY USED AT THE PRICE I WAS WILLING TO SPEND, AND FOR WHAT I WANT NEW...WELL THISE ARE OUT OF THE BUDGET. SO I DECIDED TO MAKE ONE WITH I HAVE LYING AROUND. WHAT DO I HAVE PLENTY OF? TRUCK FRAME CUT OFFS. WITH EVERY AXLE I MOVE FORWARD, I END UP WITH A SECTION OF FRAME FROM 8 FT TO 12 FT. I USE THIS STEEL FOR AS MUCH AS I CAN SINCE IT IS FREE! HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS BUILD SERIES.
I think it is cool that your wife helps you with your builds. I also like the fact that you are building your own hydraulic press. It gives me ideas of building things I will need instead of paying big money for something I can build.

Hand winch on top with dual cables helps to move bottom frame up and down .
a hand winch would have to have one extremely long handle or some gear reduction! this table is heavy!

The way that come out about his Xmas wish was so funny peterbuilt 35t wrecker then says I didn't want to be too greedy I love the way he comes out with things at times keep making them building videos buddy love watching them
don't know if there is a reason or not but the smooth side of the uprights on mine are on the inside where its easier to see where the pin holes are
i put them this way because of what i have in my mind next.

good helper there, if you left a stub on the center of the shaft you could have used it for a press pin LOL

Got to say I'm impressed with the Evolution Chop Saw.
i made my press out of old bridge girder(angle iron riveted together) with 8 in channel for the top and table sides
I love how you repurpose stuff and use as much of whatever it was as possible. My town drives me insane with what gets tossed because I can't fix everything and pass it on. Window ACs are something I fix and sell very cheap with a swap out guarantee because I consider them a quality of life appliance and know what struggling with no AC is like. Peace

I watched a video where another tuber built his own press and painted bright yellow also from USA he owned lots of farm stuff spoke very fast but his was a little bigger and over engineered Well done and big help from the wife

Nice! I built a miniature version of that 20 years ago out of scrap pulled from the bin at work. It was intended to be bench mounted but I have drug it all over the shop and never tied it down.
Originally intended for a 5 ton bottle jack, that one gave up the fight so I slid my low profile 20 ton in there thinking the frame would break somewhere. I've had that jack "squeaking" many times and nothing has moved but whatever I was pressing out. It's one of the best piles of scrap I ever put together.
I always wanted to build a horizontal press but at this age and physical condition I doubt I will now. We had a 200 ton horizontal at work and used it a lot. You had to be careful not to ruin a part or yourself with it. It was a beast but an overhead track with a couple of chain falls is a must. Fingers were no match for it.
The other thing we had was a single rail overhead track running overhead of all our machines. They were interconnected by curves and switches and were indispensable for moving parts from one machine to the next.
That shop was the biggest bunch of museum reject machines way past their prime 50 years prior but we made magic happen every day and I miss it every day.
It broke my heart but it all got scrapped when the plant closed. Most of the machines were much too big to be practical but I sure did dream of those metal shapers, the 17 foot metal planer and 20 foot lathe sleeping in a big building behind my house. Several more lathes, mills, welders and tables with 1 inch thick tops filled things out. None of it could be had though, it all went to the scrap yard in town with explicit directions to be destroyed even though I had several museums that would have taken them. Liability was given as the reason.
What a shame.
You will never regret making that press but never lose your respect for it. Things can exit it faster than your heart can beat after they went flying.

I could have bought one years ago. it just isnt me. i dont spend money where money doesnt need to be spent. i dont know what the fait of this press will be when i am gone but i am sure there will be a story about "that time dad built a press out of old truck frame" that might live on. all we have in live is the experience and the memories. yours are carrying you well. i hope mine do the same.
I would have never believed that the Evolution saw would cut that cylinder shaft. I am impressed.
'it is a great tool. i once cut 5/8" thick 4"x6" steel angle with this saw. cuts like butter. cut truck axle shafts, king pings, all kings of hardened steel. it never disappoints.

A long time ago I built my press used this 10 in I beam , 3/4 thick , burnt every hole with a torch , made me laugh watching u guys lift it , I did the same thing . Great addition to the shop.
it was about all we could do!
Nothing like making something out of nothing with good materials left over . Glad you know how to repurpose all that left over steel , a lot of people would just throw that away and not give it a second thought, why spend tons of money when you have what you need .
I'm tossing a couple suggestions for the base if you got a flat sheet steel just weld it under the legs & for the pins add ether a loop or cross chunk rebar or pipe so the shelf pins can only go in one way & not get pushed through to far by accident ! Other wise your on the right track & the cost you save will be so much $$ in your pocket as it's going last longer then you will be needing it !
i stopped the video at this point because it was already getting long. the pins are not finished. i have so much more to do on this "simple and quick" press project.

Bloody great project.
Cut the big piece you cut of pins into 4 and weld back on so pins don’t slide all the way through.
the finished pins didnt make it in this part of the video. they got some little add ons for safety.

Man I messed up I told people my size was a decent welder I guess I should have said a service truck. Maybe next year. Cant wait to see the finish project
You need to get for your tractor w a 3pt hitch a blower to tre back of the tractor to clean up the leave at that home

Definitely consider a winch or a 2 way ram off a wheel loader with a two-way ram not only can you pull the table up if you need but you can push the table down and with the wind you can just run a cable on the outside with the little pulley and pull the table up and let the table go down maybe a little bit of a pain but might be beneficial in the long run

i use to do it with just a grinder and a torch. many years of hard work, sacrifice and pinching pennies.

Working through your videos at the moment .. I've seen a few different builds on these but nothing this big .. i seriously believe that will become a very appreciated shop tool as the time comes for the need to use it . its got a nice large area for the lower bed so should be adequate for most jobs to rest without having to be tied down or propped up allowing for more movement around the part. Looking forward to seeing it finished ..thanks again for sharing these builds ,

haven't finished it yet but i got a worm drive boat winch to raise and lower the bed on my press winch will be on right side and cable runs over head left and straight down for winch side worm drive stops when you stop doesn't go click click. i put a 2500 lb winch on my cherry picker where i have a remote to raise and lower engines

Amazing video !! I have been wrenching for over 50 years, ASE Master car and truck Tech , and have seen my share pf "parts hangers" . Your fabricating and mechanical skills are among the best I have seen . This country needs to encourage people to learn the trades . I too live in the rust belt (WNY) so I feel your pain when you have to repair a northern vehicle !! LOL Flame wrench and Never Seize are your friends ! You and your wife make a great pair . appreciate the kind words bob. i just do the best i can with what i have. i dont have the luxury of throwing parts at a problem so i need to do everything i can to verify the problem. if i can do it, anyone can. i agree. we need more young folks in the trades and using their hands to build and or fix things.
Another suggestion for your hydraulics would also be an airless paint sprayer produces and extreme amount of pressure which will help you extend your hydraulic ram very fast
hydraulics work off of pressure applied to a surface area in a cylinder. low pressure in low pressure applied. higher pressure in higher pressure applied. i need significant pressure to make this press able to be used to the materials capacity.
That thing looks really solid! My dad has a press that he bought years ago about that size, the pins on it are just one pin on each side under the table. It's been a while since I seen it, but I think the uprights are bent metal like truck frame and I think the table and top maybe structural channel. I had thought about trying to build one out of the old truck frame I hauled off last year, but I figured it wasn't worth the work since I have access to one if I need it. That truck frame is strong, should be very solid unit when you get done.
i looked at a few factory made but it was just too much money for as little i need one. the table would have been much nicer if it were structural but im not complaining...it should be just fine.

Definitely heavy duty, you might need a winch system to lower and raise your deck, that sucker will be heavy.

Hello JC, very good informative video..that is what i really admire about you. You do things slowly but surely. it may take a lot of time but you're making sure that it goes the way it should and what it has to be, based on what it have to do. Sometimes I wish I had more width on mine. Two observations, on my factory built press, the c-channel uprights are opposite of what you assembled, the "c" part faces to the outside. And my table sits on top of the pins, they don't go through it. Your table is going to be very heavy when you get it assembled, will be hard to line up the holes to adjust the height especially if you are working alone.
these uprights are faced this way for two reasons. 1) i have want all the extra room for wide things to fit in the press. 2) i have things planned for the outside of the uprights. as far as the pins, i used 4 pins through the table and the uprights because this NOT structural steel. therefore it is thinner in spots. i am spreading the load on 4 pins and hole instead of two. now for moving the table....im sure you have watched enough of my videos to know that i probably have some ideas about that.

My brother has one similar size if not a little bigger and it uses a boat winch to raise and lower the bed. It uses 6 mild steal pins for the bed. Looking good with just scrap laying around.

Hello , my name is Ben , I'm in northern Ontario Canada and over the past several years have watched your videos with much anticipation and admiration. I have bought tools because of your recommendation eg. the Milwaukee cordless impact gun , best single tool I have ever bought in my life. I do the same type of work you do . I have a farm , drive my own tractor trailers seasonally, and repair and build trucks as deals present themselves . I admire your work ethic as it parallels my own . I just finished watching your hyd press build from old truck frame . You are very lucky to have a coworker that doesn't quit every other day or you can't communicate with for fear of offending them in some way . I work alone as you do sometimes, it's manageable but difficult. I am 67 , work every day just not very fast anymore. You said you got winded lifting the completed frame up , get used to it, doesn't get any better. I love you videos please keep them coming. Your friend from Ontario.
hello ben! sure appreciate you watching our videos. i tried hiring help. just like you have experienced, they are unreliable, get their feelings hurt over nothing and think they are worth above average pay for below average abilities. i realized that there is no need to pay someone to do something that i will most likely have to go over and fix again myself. some say my standards are too high and expect too much. i think i was just born into the wrong generation. my father and grandfather etched this work ethic into me. i really dont mind working alone. most enjoy turning the phone off and the old country hits on. those are my most productive days. i do get winded easier as the years pass. at my age i have now come to realize i have lived more years than i have to live and i need to do what i want now before i cant. sometimes that means taking a project beyond what it really needs to be....but that is okay with me. i wish you all the success and good health for all of your days. i will continue to make videos as long as i feel there are great folks like you out there watching and enjoying. thanks for your kind words and a look into your life....sincerely, j.c. smith

I've recently been really tempted to do exactly this same thing. I've got one of the 20 ton Horrible Freight presses now and although it works, it is far from heavy duty. I know for sure when I do build my new one it will have either an air over hydraulic or electric over hydraulic system with a foot pedal so both hands can be available to hold onto whatever I'm pressing on the table
Just a suggestion for helping you out mount a boat winch just a manual boat winch to the side bring your cables up and down each side to be able to lift your table up and down and hold it in place so you can pin it we had a press at our old shop that had that set up and it was so easy to change the height

that crank handle would have to be super long or have some gear reduction....this thing is HEAVY!
@@j.c.smithprojects sure , worm drive is the best solution. Do you have electric power steering in US small cars? I mean directly electric, no electro-hydraulic . I think some Hondas Civic or Toyotas, Mitsubishi Colt and Smart should use that. It contains 12V electric motor and worm drive, it's pretty strong and you can use it for your press

Jc do you guys have a waste oil heater for your shop, I have one and I usually can go the season without buying any fuel .We are in the northeast I love ours .I only ask because I see the Mrs all bundled up you . Know youhaveto keep her happy tough to find a hard worker like her. You too make a great team ,👍
we have a fuel oil furnace. it was 60 degrees in the shop. she was just going in and out tending to the chickens, getting the mail and a few other things that day.
That’s a really impressive construction you started.
I scrounged a large pickup truck discarded roof rack to use for construction of my own press, so yours is one of many videos I’ve watched to get ideas for the design.
I’m surprised you don’t have a gantry and chain hoist for this kind of work.

That is brilliant, but I don`t work with trucks, so I don`t have a piece of frame lying around, and I fear that a piece of frame that long will be 1000$ from a scrapyard So I will keep looking in the classifieds for a hydraulic press.

2) When this thing is finished, you will need the allmighty Gradall to move it. Or will you put this hydraulic press device on 4 heavy industrial casters? I always love if scrap metal, used or old parts etc. are used. It's resourceful and environment friendly and that's exactly how a lot of things on our planet should be done more often.
Of course I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next part.

I really enjoy your videos, and appreciate your ideas and talent, thankyou. Is there any simple way you could quieten the cutting and grinding noises or enhance your voices? I know nothing of video production, but I do know if I can hear you two speaking, the machinary noise is painfully loud.
If not, thats a shame but I will still follow your endevours.
of all the things i do, editing these videos is what i absolutely hate the most. i do the best i can with the amount of time im willing to give up. i wish someone else would do this. im sure they could do a much better job and please more people. im just not that guy. i would rather be working on a project than sitting at the computer editing.

You mis-spelled Milwaukee.
the batteries last a good while. the 1 9/16" annular cutter shortened the time we got out them normally but it did just fine.
flying by seat of the pants engineering/design is often the best kind. JC making use of what he already has an abundance of,and too boot making it to his standards from the get go. oh, and you know you wouldnt lower your standards to buying a hydraulic press from horrible freight JC. 99% of it would end up as more scrap laying around the shop if you did
they always ask for a list.....i just couldnt ask for more than one thing!

How many holes are your cutters able to do are you noticing them dulling are you using hss steel or cobalt cutters
40 holes so far and no noticeable difference. hss.

amazing that you can do without such tools that others so often find necessary.
as always it seems you can build damn near anything.
and you build homemade better than you can buy.
especially at todays prices.
i really enjoy building things. when it works out well, that is even better. i will have a fair amount of time in this press but not a lot of cash. maybe a few hundred.

i couldnt afford what i WANTED to am building what i NEED. who knows maybe when i am gone, it will go to my son and then his son. not because it is great but because they want what i made.
@@j.c.smithprojects I think it's better quality than most of the presses made these days. Definitely better than the harbor freight press I have, and I only have that because it was given to me by a friend.

A very enjoyable build, but could I suggest that you cut the volume of the sound effects during the edit. We want to hear what you have to say, but don't want to hear the scream of the chop saw or the racket coming from the mag base drill. As I type this my wife is trying to get to sleep in our room nearby, and I was very conscious of the workshop noises that were generally much louder than your voices. Lots to like though, especially the use of scrap material, or at the very least, low cost material instead of buying expensive steel stock from a metal supplier. I have thought of building something similar, but sourcing the hydraulics for a 50 to 60 tonne press at a price that I could afford has put me off. I will be interested to see what you come up with for yours.
i absolutely hate every minute of editing these videos. i dont want to take this down a road it doesnt have to see....im just going to say......IT IS WHAT IT IS.
@@j.c.smithprojects I can certainly see where you are coming from wrt editing, perhaps a different type of microphone placed to maximise your voice(s) but minimise background noise might help. All the best, and keep the good work.
