  • It's May 1994 and i'm on the Southern Region. We start at Gatwick Airport with a light engine class 33 and a Gatwick Express Inter-City working with a 73. At Redhill we see an 09 shunting plus a Turbo DMU and Southern Thumper DEMU before moving on to Tonbridge with more Thumper action along with a couple of class 47 light engine moves. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

    The days when loco's running through stations 'light engine' was still a regular occurrence. And also the Gatwick Express was a true premium service unlike today with those turgid 387's and their ironing board seats!

    Love seeing the Gatwick Express with the post van at the front! Those 08 and 09s are like old Land Rovers. Totally unstoppable workhorses!! Omg that’s a rare catch in 1994 a thumper heading for Guildford. By then those new units at 6:15 were taking over from the three windowed DMUs… (I note the alarm has changed to a bell since 1988)

      I don't think the Thumpers went to Guildford at this time, Reigate possibly and then back to Tonbridge. A few weeks later the electric service started and the Thumpers withdrawn.....

    Interesting video. It seems that I'll have to continue searching for footage of the Gatwick Express with a vocal Class 73 on the back.
    The only time I was at the station I heard a Gatwick Express depart with nice vocal traction motors but unfortunately I had no means of recording it. Having been pushed by a 73 before at Basingstoke the only disadvantage is a rather unrefined start presumably due to the 73 having not enough turn down when starting on the juice together with loose couplings resulting in a cattle truck start 😁😁

    Look at the Gatwick Express then to the Gatwick Express now. Joke. Thank god we still have these quality videos to remember them by.

    Another superb film of happy days sadly gone by. And when the railway was cared for too.

    I rue the day that the original Gatwick Express stock was withdrawn, thanks to Privatisation and the start of wasting enormous amounts of money. Ironically the Class 73 was later re-engineered to 73/9.The Mk 2 air conditioned stock was nice, I remember it used on a route out of Liverpool Street, i was perhaps going to Harich for the ferry to NL.

    In 1998 I wanted to go up and down that line recording the announcements. I had a feeling they weren't going to be around much longer.
    I didn't get around to it.
    Permanent Regret.

      @EM-yk1dw Před 2 lety

      @@MrGriser Sometime in late 1994 for the Channel tunnel freight traffic, although the Class 92s were not allowed round via Redhill because I believe their electronics disagreed with the signalling so the electrification became more or less for the benefit of passenger traffic.
