"I hate serration. I personally think it is worthless." Finally, someone who agrees with me!
+vgman94 Agreed!
Cem Millik After getting some experience with a sawback machete, I agree with pretty much everything you said. Partially serrated blade are not worth it, but full serration is good. Never seen a fully serrated EDC knife however.
vgman94
most knives will become "micro serrated" through normal use abuse and sharpening. that's my preferred blade edge.
vgman94 agreed. Good for military maybe
I could have stopped buying knives after either of these knives. I have the D2 Steel on both. As for a useable pocket tool/knife that won’t make me cry when I damage them, total winners. I did need to do some frame lock modifications for a better closing experience.. I tend to carry the esee more on my job because it is a thinner carry.👍👍👍👍
i found that the Ontario Rat 1 holds and edge better than my SOG
I love both OKC RAT1/2 & ESEE Avispa/Zancudo, I have a few versions of all four.
My interest level was only so-so on these two knives. However , you sir, gave an intelligent, concise, yet thorough review. Great work.

Lauch McMillan Welcome to the GT family!
0:31 In Spanish there isn't any difference between the pronunciation of V and B but you say it rather correctly, "avispa" or the non-existing "abispa" would sound the same. Greetings from Spain, saludos.
Joking, great job on the video! I have two RAT1's and an orange Avispa, LOVE them both!
That's a bias on cost the aus 8 on mine holds it's edge better than my coldsteel code 4 and they have the same edge geometry sharpened at 21 degrees
I have both of these knives, and like them both. However, I prefer the Spyderco Tenacious to either of them. The Tenacious costs a little more, but I think it outperforms either of these options. Great comparison video though!
My tenacious is crap! It's got the edge retention but hardware is really bad. My clip screws don't even hold the clip, I've lost 2 screws and been through two replacement sets. My blade isn't centered and it will not stay sturdy whatever I do, there's alway play.
Bell Blades on a knife i own i used super glue on the threads and havent had any issues since
Yup.
I have both n for me the rat 1 is far superior in every aspect.
Thank you! I'm a lefty and I'm glad you thought of it!
Thorough reviews like this are why I subscribed. Thanks. Dog at end is nice touch too. Just sold my RAT1 after buying a Ka-Bar BK13CP to complement a Ka-Bar BK7. They're a handy do-all combo.
Right on!
Just bought both. I find that the Avispa is hard to unlock and also has a hotspot on the steel side of the knife where your index finger goes (its not as rounded as the zytel). I prefer the RAT-1 as it is much more comfortable due to its width and is flings open much easier.
Suprised that the Avispa is not only thinner, but lighter! Good comparison dude.
Ya it is sweet! Thanks for the comment!
For left hand opening on the Avispa just unscrew the thumb stud and flip it around it works good for me as a lefty
Nice side by side review! I have both knives and for me it's RAT model 1 all the way. I am left handed which makes it twice as hard to open the Avispa. and the Rat 1 just feels more solid in my hand. At least my Cold Steel knives had switchable thumb studs but the Avispa just sucks, although I do like the drop point blade shape.
Wow, you have come a long ways! The quality of the videos are so much better.
Excellent review Aaron! my Ontario Rat 1 arrived today and I'm very pleased with the knife. Thanks again for your reviews.
I own both. Avispa doesn’t fit in my hand near as well. There is a more grippy model of Rat 1.
I just ordered the Avispa in D2 steel but it has the black coating.. Then I find the same knife in d2 with stonewash finish I was like ahhhh man...
For about $39.00 from the on-line knife centers, you can get the RAT 1 with the superior D2 blade, which makes it a bargain.
Frost Bite For your situation, I think you would be fine with the AUS 8, plus you will save some money and it is easier to resharpen. The knife is a good value and good quality, no matter which steel you choose.

I bought the RAT1 with D2 steel + carbon fiber scales four years ago & I quickly regretted it. It's incredibly brittle like glass, the edge chips & rolls so easily while the AUS-8 version does not. Maybe I got a lemon & I'm hesitant to buy another D2 steel RAT1/2 because of that.
Thanks for this review. It really helped me make a decision to purchase sight 'unseen'. Next best thing to having the knife in my hand.
Enjoying the knife comparo's on GT, keep it up!
I wonder if the thumbstud on the Esee can be swapped over for lefties (like you can with a Cold Steel).
I can't tell but it does not look to be rotatable.
great vid. I have the rat 1 as an edc. now I want the avispa for edc and will make my rat 1 in my camping bag or go bag
You won't regret it Mark.
And the winner is..... Spyderco paramilitary 2 (Spyderco Tenacious if you are poor).
Idk if it's just me but I strongly dislike knives that have nylon, G-10, carbon fiber or some other material on one side and then metal on the other. Personal preference but I just don't like it
B Ko same I wish they didn't do that
Neither lock is gonna fail, as long as you're using the knife how it's designed to be used. Personally, I like the blade design of the Rat more. However, I'd prefer better blade & scale materials. Although, the price point is excellent, so I'm not knocking the knife. Nice review.
Hi.Im new to knifes but really happy cuz got an ontario rat 1 knife :) but there is something strange ( not sure if its supposed to be like that) when closing the blade you can hear something like a rasp ( not sure if its the right word, but my enligsh is not really good ) its sounds like metal to metal but the sound is not that rought.I guess its cuz of the little ball on the liner lock.Any ideas how correct it ?
is it brand new? these knives often require a loosening of the pivot and oil. either of which couldbpotentially be the solution
Thanks for the vid. I already have gray, coyote and green Rat 1s. I like the thinner profile, but I am having a tough time getting excited about this new Rat-like knife.
Seems ESEE and Ontario are back at it again. First the RTAK to the Junglas, now the RAT1 to the Avispa, can't we all just get along? lol
Never! haha
Great video! What I didn't get or missed is the sizes of handles. Are they identical? The Esee handle kinda looks shorter in the same time when blade length is the same. Sorry if I missed that, please respond if you can!
Tommy the Trail Dog! How is he doing since the accident? I haven't seen him in your videos since.
Geez, I just looked up the price of the Rat 1 versus the Avispa. $40 shipped versus $110 shipped.
I might pick up a rat 2 in pink - slightly shorter and smaller. (I have tiny hands!)
Try Amazon $25 for the rat 1 and around $40 for the avispa
+astrangeone Where in the world are you seeing an Avispa for $110?! I see them regularly for $35.
choltzapple
Canadian version of Amazon.
+astrangeone Ouch! That's one hell of a shafting. For that money I would get a Mini Griptillian and dinner.
Picked up a Rat1 for $30, I tend to break my knives a lot and don’t want to spend a lot. Good knife for a good price!
Wow, they're really similar.
Well, other than the one doesn't have a fricken handle on one side....
what you think, is Avispa more ruged and robust than Rat 1???
did you not watch the damn thing????
Thanks for the vid. Why do you suppose esee is making a smaller thumb stud for lefties? Price? If so that's kinda being a cheap ass. Lol
I have no idea, but it wouldn't be because of price.
Good and informed cutlerylover-style review!

Dafoodmaster Thanks and welcome to the GT family!
Im buying way to many knives these days. I have to stop.watchimg these reviews
Rat 1 is the better knife.
RAT - RAT - RAT
ITS THE SAME FREAKING KNIFE PEOPLE!!!!! Get over it, us ESEE fans got robbed, hoodwinked, bamboozled. It's BS, I just don't get it they know EVERYONE has been dying for an ESEE 3 folder, why not just make that instead of stealing someone else's most popular model????
6:30 is how I close my Kershaw Shallot
Right on Jake!
I'm very proud of you.
Which one for defense usage?
Is that a dog or a beaver? He was going at that wood pretty good :-)
+Eddie King I love the stuff.
gideonstactical are either one of these knives assisted opening?
Bob Piggott No. Both are manual.
the avispa is 4.45 oz
luke clerico Thanks!
How reliable is knife works
I have both. the rat is much better quality
I don't mean to brag but...my rat 1 is coming today!!!
great vid!
Jarhead6 Thanks!
I hate serrated blades
I prefer avispa
"I hate serration [&combo]. I personally Know it is worthless." They might be for the Sis's who worry about knifees hurting their little handies, idk, or Cheap Knife Collectors, NOT Users! Everytime I hear some Soft Nurd going on about "gimping" and hurting your hands, I think, 'Why would you even Want a Knife!?!' The RAT is to use, carefully, it WILL CUT YOU, Very unforgiving if you aim for your personal tissue.
Are you kidding me, you just said SOG used good AUS-8?! SOG is garbage bud lol
Trevor Mathews so does that mean I shouldn't pay $200 for the SOG Kiku aus-8 blade? lol. I really did want to try it because it does look good but I decided on the Esee 5.
Gonzo21 better choice imo. The worse knife I ever purchased was a sog folder. Put me right off
Sog makes some Sexy knives tho
Um, it's pretty common knowledge their aus 8 is done well
St George love my ganzo’s. Bought 2 i liked the first so much. All this knife hype is gd stuff, but as i was tellin my 11yr old, which btw has started her own coll., yu dnt Need a bugout or para2. I hv rat1 n an avispa. 2very decent knives. For what i gonna do, my 9.99Camillus does fine!! Jimping all over, strong plastic handles, sharp blade, 4 1/2 in scales as yall like to say. Bet i can make it last 3 yrs. at least. Hell im addicted too; i want the civivi bklash, the south grind Case, need i go on? Cool video man
What a knock off. I don't respect any company that does that. They literally couldn't even drill the pocket clip holes different.
Both ☝️💯‼️
