My Catahoula leopard dog used to surf with me and could do the 2 mile ocean swim with me! They are pure athletes, and super intelligent- he had a working vocabulary of 250 words. He could signal please, thank you and you're welcome appropriately and charmed the socks off of everyone. He was the smartest dog I have ever owned! I miss him everyday.
I have a Cane Corso Italiano and she’s a service animal. Yes every breed can be aggressive when they or their owner is threatened. But training and how they are raised has a lot to do with how they respond in all situations.
The only two breeds I've heard of on this list are the Thai Ridgeback & the Chinook. The rest are new to me. Would love to see a cat version of this!
We have a Mudi with heterochromia and she’s the most energetic and smartest dog. We rescued her from a farm in hungary ❤️
The Otterhounds number at 800 registered worldwide. So, still rare. In fact, there are MORE giant pandas on this planet than this breed.

Wait,what?¿? The Chinook is the official state dog of New Hampshire ?¿? Dang, I have lived here for 38 years and never new that.
My favorite dog ever is the Canis africanis also known as the African Village Dog. She was related to a couple other dogs on this list, but with the best of all those traits. She was the smartest dog I've ever known, semi-feral, and loved to sing with me when I played guitar and harmonica (her fave. song was The Punch Bros version of "Heart in a Cage"). She was incredibly athletic and loved to go for long runs in the heat. I adopted her when I lived in South Africa and witnessed her hunt and bring down an antelope 4x her weight with another dog - I was both horrified and amazed. When I moved back I took her with me. Her favorite place to be in the whole wide world was the beach! Here's to you Sana wa Pungela! I hope one day dogs of this breed will be available outside of sub-Saharan Africa.
As a half-Hungarian, half-Finn, I already knew about Mudi's, and I love them so much ♥️
Mudi is not a new breed theyre a very old breed but were only recognized by AKC this past year

I had two Catahoulas. Such personalities! Bossy, very loving and silly .
I'm surprised that Basenjis wasn't on the list. We had one when I was young. They are excellent dogs!

My family dog when I was a kid was a Catahoula! She was like a big sister to my younger sibling and I. Very well trained, smart and patient with us kids. A few years after she passed in 2009, my parents adopted a Houla mix. She’s not the brightest and she’s the spoiled baby of the family, but she’s a sweet little girl. Shout out to all the Houla families out there!
Mudi has to be my favorite of these new breads 💕🐶

I was a proud Catahoula mom. They are incredible dogs but I can get why a lot of people don't know about them. They are very much working dogs and require a lot of patience and training.
