Jim Kilpatrick is an amazing drummer, hell he was my examiner in my Standard Grade Music class in high school, the man must have liked what he seen and heard coz he gave me top marks and even said my drum pieces where of a higher level than i was getting graded on, but thats not why im commenting on here, i just thought id point out that the drum he is using has a loose snare or two or what me and my band members know as a rattley drum, but that doesnt matter to jim it could sound like a biscuit tin and he would still make it sound good

I know I am not a pro by no means and can't play this technique very well but I feel like having a really tight drumhead helps as the rebound assists in the bounce to help your fingers to push the stick back down. I have practiced extensively on getting my double strokes down and can't seem to get past 130 bpm with basically letting go of the stick and let just the index and thumb to hold on and let the stick do the work. I can go really fast but it's not as loud as the slower bpm technique. Idk if you know what I'm talking about but I didn't really try to employ this technique until later in life. I'm wondering if my twitch muscles aren't flexible enough anymore to achieve the proper technique needed to play fast doubles.

Bobby Thompson former drummer rest in peace his left hand grip is a lot different than what you're doing he would press the thumb against the index and middle finger straight out and curl the pinky gave excellent control he's taught that too many world champion from the Buick Wars throughout the country there were books available with Bobby Thompson and Jon dollan who developed the back sticking technique he was a good friend of mine also rest in peace John I like they're many books out their traditional rudimental drumming in United States

I wouldn't be so sure. Jojo Mayer is one of the most respected drum set players of recent times, possibly even in the pantheon of the all time greats. His technique and control is just otherworldly. I would put him on par with Jim, albeit they play different styles. Jim himself would tell you that Jojo is one of the greats - the two have done clinics together in the past. If you get a chance to see Jojo's DVD on hand technique, I suspect you will find yourself quite astounded.

Threepace, I agree with you that Jojo is phenominal drum set player...head and shoulders above just about any others..and just for share talent it would need someone alot more knowledgeable than us to truely separate him and Jim..but, as far as styles go - Jim definately is a more technical drummer..elite pipe band drumming is the most technical. You won't see the technicality unless you either see Jim playing at the worlds etc with his core or solo in the worlds, via gusweb. My honest opinion

What a strange comment. You put a question mark after "Lol" (which should be "LOL" as it is a venerable acronym), then come out with an ex-cathedra statement that you neither back up with proof, nor show that you even know about the myriad snare drumming styles. Perhaps you are still just a kid.
