    I've owned a RSL Speedwoofer 10S for over three years. Your review is accurate. Of note, it easily separates the bass guitar from the bass drum. Very musical. Plenty loud enough for home theater, too. The only "upgrade" I would consider is a second one. Unnecessary, at the moment. THE best value in subwoofers, period.

    I've had the opposite experience with this sub. It's good for movies but I turn it off for 2 channel and my near field experience with this was 1 hour because I could not get it to play nice. The Amp was all or nothing. Mine is for sale and I plan on building a servo sub in the near future. I bought this after all the hype but I'm not a fan personally.
    The company was nice to work with. I blew the amplifier and they sent me a new one with no questions asked.
    I will disclose that I worked in an audio store so, I heard lots of subs and my speakers are full range, 91db efficient and very fast.

    Alot of people dont realise that higher end ported designs make less distortion than sealed . As far as drivers are concerned the spider(s) on the back of the cone absorb the nuance by bieng so rigid . The rogers labs seems to be an element of a variation of the russel k red cabinets. Passive radiators typically have too much hangover . So basically a well designed and integrated ported design can outperform any other design at least at home. Sundown originally created the first sql driver and this is because of the progressive spider compliance arrangement.
    Digital designs makes the most advanced subs but are not availible for home subs.

    Hi, I saw that you own the KEF r400b. I own this to. Think it's a real winner, but I have no chance to compare it with other subs and there are not much reviews of it in the net. Have you compared the r400b with the new Kc62? I asked the KEF support regarding crossover settings with LS50WII and they suggested to use the KF92 setting, so I suspect it is close to the KF92 than to KC62.

    It is hard to get much below $399 even if you go the DIY route. I did a DIY 8" Dayton Reference build aiming to do a lot of what this sub is going for (speed, musicality etc) and it came out to around $300 with amp, sub, box. That is not considering my 6 or so hours labor, and that is not including price and labor putting a finish on the box!

    Thujan, after watching this review twice, I went and ordered two speed woofers to stiffen up my Tektons in the bass region. RSL's website was helpful in explaining how to hook them up to my VanAlstine control amp since it has no outs other than speaker connections. They put all the money into the sound with this amp. Basically it's similar to how a REL subwoofer is connected using a second set of speaker wires to the sub and using the subs internal crossover setting. My question to you is do you recommend running filters to the mains to "take some of the load off them" as some people recommend or run the mains at all frequencies? Which is better for blending since the tektons on their own are no slouch in the bass and can handle lower frequencies without fear of damage like smaller monitors? Thank you

    Your passion for the Speedwoofer 10s gets me excited. Great video. I have the same passion for my JL D110's. I'm just in love with them, even 2 years later.
    The Speedwoofer wins over any KEF and REL sub in my mind because they included variable phase control. After learning how to properly dial in phase and testing different crossover points and locations in the room. Phase does weird shit in a room and variable phase control is a must for absolute perfect integration and maximum performance. For us dedicated 2 channel listeners that don't have the ability to input the distance in the amp, a 0°-180° phase switch isn't going to cut it. REL & KEF should know this and for them not to include variable phase on a sub that costs more is just lunacy and laziness. Variable phase control should be an industry standard on subs but it's not. And that's a shame.

    Really interesting review.. thanks for bringing it into the light. I'm only interested in these for 2 channel audio so the thought of buying two of these for both L & R channels at this price is really attractive. Which of the REL music subs (ie. T7, T9, etc.) does this compete directly with in your opinion?

    • @ThujanK
      @ThujanK Před 3 lety +1

      The REL T series are musical subwoofers with better performance for music ( In terms of speed, integration with speakers, bass detail). In terms of extension and output these would comparable to the T7/T9 series. However the RSL Speedwoofers aren't that far behind, but you don't get that nice piano black finish.

    • @bryansu
      @bryansu Před 3 lety

      good question bro.. By the way i got the rel T9i, but i dont have the RSL before. But would be getting the rsl for a test and compete it directly with the rel T9. The rel T9i do have that "texture" in the bass. and its really not a "one note bass" sub. BUT this rel t9 is not good for movie. It does not produce that suddenly tactile bass that hit you chest hard enough. Saying that, you can't volume up too much rel. This is a thing i dont like about rel. But its good for normal listening where you want to hear all the bass texture, the bass details. Its like , it build for the purpose of enhancing the sound or to fill up the gap of what the front speaker cannot do on the bass region. Its just that. It just that. I try to do EQ on it with rew, and no matter how i set it, the rel just not meant to give u that sudden explosion of bass that hit so hard on your chest that you will jump up. No, it does not do that. But i do believe the higher model of rel like the S series would give u that tactile bass cause it has higher wattage to give u that sudden pump. having a RMS 300w with 500w peak is very different from 300w with 1000w peak. The peak still play an important role for that sudden punch. Having say that, S series way too expensive. For this reason, i am looking for other sub that can give me both the texture and detail but at the same time that suddenly shocking slam bass to your face in a much affordable cost. RSL, HSU, PB1000 might be it. Yea i know it might lack abit of the bass details or texture...but honestly by how much? i dont think its a lot. i can always add two RSL with that price and its still lower than the rel t9i and i believe add 2 sub will give me back the texture and details.....In my opinion i think a great sub should be (1) give u the texture in bass (2) bass details and speed (3) and the sudden attack . so this is just my 2cen...

    In addition, I bought a smaller SVS unit to drop in on the upper teens and lower twenties frequency range. In my small room (one open side), I get what I both wanted and could afford. What many think they need (110 DB in a cathedral at 10 Hz) is rarely present and extraordinarily expensive to reproduce.

      I would avoid B&W subwoofers. Amp failure is quite common (owned one before). The ASW608 was released in 2009 and the capacitors they use within the plateamp do not age well. If you have warranty and are able to strike up a deal then maybe.

    • @amb3cog
      @amb3cog Před 3 lety

      It was released then, but they still make them. So you're getting new capacitors. And probably different ones then what they originally used, if indeed they did have issues with them. Nemo Propaganda absolutely loves his, and have it a great review. I was thinking of checking one out myself, but I need a little more power I feel. I like to rock out once in a while, and my tower speakers are 91db sensitivity.
      Also this is the first I've ever heard about them having problems with their subs, and I've read a heck of a lot of reviews on them from consumers who've bought them online. In fact I've probably read/seen every review there is on these, because I was thinking of getting a pair. And while I'm sure there was a review, or three that told of a failure. I don't remember seeing a pattern at all, and every product has some failures. That's how it goes unfortunately.
      That being said. If it worries you. A REL t/5 would be a great alternative. Either way. Good luck. ✌️

      Even though Rel subs are great for music, the 1205 is more for HT duties rather then 2-channel music.
      With 40% movies and 60% 2-channel, I have similar listening habits as yourself and I have a stereo pair of small 8-inch down firing Rel subwoofers positioned behind my stereos (as recommended!) and they sound absolutely great in my small 13 x 11.5 ft living room.
      I give them 8 out of 10 for my movie experience and 10/10 for 2-Channel music.

    Okay so here's my question: You say it's fast because it's a 10" sub. But actually, wouldn't a 12" or 15" woofer in a Loudspeaker dedicated for stereo listening (for example the ones in (old) tannoys or the good ol' JBL's be way faster and punchier?
    Unless you listen to a lot of low frequency heavy music (I'm talking about sub 30Hz), there is, If you have appropriate speakers, not even a need for this sub, right? I'd be VERY curious, how it performs from 30-80hz or even up to 100hz in comparisson to speakers like the Tektons. (I do really miss a high pass filter for speakers and subs. would be so practical in apartmentbuildings)
    Oh and I wanted to add: The enclosure design used is a TQWT design. Usually it's used in speakers though. With this design it is indeed possible to build relatively small cabinets almost as slim as the totem tribe. These speakers usually only use small 6-8" woofer but due to the design it plays down to 30hz (with quite a punch too, compared to "normal" encloure designs).

    3/27/24 WOW ! Nice review. Think I’m leaning towards trying this out against my SVS 3000 micro which is ok but I’m looking for something else , just can’t seem make a choice… until this video. Unfortunately they are out of stock right now. Can’t even preorder yet ( the MK II IM referring to . Philosophy better then this version reviewed here. We’ll see . I would like to find supper fast base and hers the key , that U can feel as well . Not-in the form of a long drowning drawn out note but instead fast and punchy. Started with a cheap 10 100w klipsch , way to drowny and over powering . Went to Rel T zero which was an improvement over the klipsch but I struggled to hear it , I know that is there designed in characteristic, but I wanna hear and feel my base. So I tried there T7 10 inch and just don’t like it’s speed and lack of punch or thump. So then I threw two Polk 8” subs into the ring of tryouts and thought there was somewhat improvement . Maybe cause of the duel subs . By the way two channel listener only . No TV or Theodore. Just music. Now I can’t wait to try the speed woofer MK II when it’s back in stock . Thanks for making this review. - SEAN from NJ

      I have both, the RSL is much larger so as you would expect it can play louder and extend lower. The 3000 Micro is going to give you much nicer aesthetics, a form factor no wife would complain about, and output that is very impressive for the size. Oddly the RSL plays quicker, it really is a ported sub that has the quickness of a sealed unit and earns it's name fair and square.

    Anybody have a sub-woofer that produces a low frequency quiet hum?. It is not the sub-woofer itself (I don't think). I can leave it plugged in and powered on and there will be NO HUM if I disconnect the inter-connect cables that are plugged from my sub to my AMP. Can the AMP itself cause a ground loop? I heard a "Isolation Transformer/Ground Loop Hum Eliminator" might help? Any suggestions? I like to listen to Jazz a lot and that music can be dynamic. Even though the hum is not very loud - During quiet passages in Jazz the noise can be very noticeable. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

And, the problem started about 1 month after. Someone suggested try going from my pre-amp. That did the trick. The sub sounds better than it ever did and it also behaves better. The knobs are much more sensitive and it Shuts off after no signal in about 10-12 minutes. Sometimes it never shut off when I went from the "loop back out" ports on my power AMP. No complaints at all now. If you know of anyone having a similar problem - suggest to them a different path to the sub.Thanks again for reaching out. The REL T5(x/i) are better subwoofers when it comes down to speed and integration. However if you care more about extension and filling a medium size room you can't go wrong with the Speedwoofers (they are about 70% there in terms of speed). Music is much more difficult and complicated to do right by a sub. So, if it does music proper, it will do the movies too. It depends what you want too. If you want a sub that goes deep and do home theater good, you will go for HT sub. But if you want real quality sub that elevates soundtrack and atmosphere of the movie you will go for music sub, especially if you have only one system for all.
