It's day 2 of our East Coast Motorcycle Trip and we head into North Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion neighborhood to visit the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club and hear the story of Ellis Ferrell Jr. aka "EL DOG".
"The Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club evolved from a century-long tradition of Urban Black Cowboys in the ‘City of Brotherly Love’ and one man’s commitment to provide horsemanship experience in the inner-city.
Located in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of North Philadelphia, the 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, founded by Ellis Ferrell, remains true to its mission in producing an alternative to outdoor leisure activity to the community and engaging urban youth in equestrian sports while teaching life skills, instilling discipline and promoting academic excellence. We need your help! We’re raising money to keep our club, this historical part of Philadelphia, alive."

A wise man once said, a man has to know his limits. I worked in prison for 28 years, and I met plenty of ppl who said don't come over to our hood. I've seen some scary things just going from the parking to the jail doors, shooting in the streets, coworkers assaulted on a bus getting a broken orbital socket,...
Then you see this, makes you hold out for the hope some children's lives will be saved.

It was an incredible experience to say the least. They welcomed everyone with open arms and we just hung out like old friends. Getting to see their words reflect in the children's respect and words gave us chills. What an incredible episode! ❤ Those folks touched on some beautiful topics but what stood out the most to me was the community space where kids can hang out and learn to better themselves. This is seriously lacking in so many places.and I must admit, everything El Dog said he felt when he was on a horse is identical to how many of us feel on our bikes.

What they did with it was incredible. That's the positive, and the point of that "comment". Cherry-picking plus lack of context = not helpful.

I am so honored and humbled that you were able to expose America to this great idea! Today's youth have so many things they could be doing. However, these youth chose horses instead of malicious choices.

I worked in PHL for 12 yrs. It's a great place, but it is tough too.
They are doing God's work for sure. Kids need positive mentoring all the time to keep from making bad decisions that will affect their lives and the lives of others around them.

There are definitely some issues that need fixing and many people there are feeling it. Thanks for watching, Graham
What you're seeing is the effects of redlining, which was legal segregation through neighborhood zoning and the deliberate defunding/underfunding of black/brown neighborhoods. That meant less resources and money for housing/business development, schools, community spaces, etc. Often, the only people that can afford to purchase homes in a lot of these areas are developers.. many who do not live in those neighborhoods, and often get tax breaks, so the money never goes back into that community. And sometimes, tax payer money from these neighborhoods is taken to subsidized schools and development in wealthier neighborhoods.
There's a great book called "The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America" by Richard Rothstein which explains redlining.
This was 100 years in the making- and it's not confined to Philly alone. But we can undo it if we join as a community and put pressure on lawmakers. ❤️✊🏽
