    As a solo developer of a mildly ambitious space game I can say with complete confidence that developing space games is a good deal harder than the typical game design. All of the new tools and systems one needs to create on top of typical game-play and story are the major problem areas. For example how to handle the planets and landing, etc. It's also tough to make space fun, because of the vast distances of, well... space!

      Not to mention, us space game nerds are extremely hard to please, and come in different varieties, lol. Most people who are into NMS type stuff won't touch the harder (harder as in harder scifi rather than more fantasy oriented) stuff like ED/Eve, and vice versa.

    • @gstreetgames2530
      @gstreetgames2530 Před měsícem +2

      @@Blast_HardCheese Yeah it's a funny niche indeed, and hard even for the big franchises to pull off. I have tried everything from heavy sims like X3 to RPG's like MassEffect. I personally prefer the RPG and No Mans Sky types, but also love 4X and some sim aspects.
      I think everyone has their own ideal game, and I am sure that most include space in some form. The space junkie ideal game is an almost impossible role to fill. Just look at star citizen, its aim is that goal and it's what 11 years now? 14? I lost count!

    • @SizzleCorndog
      @SizzleCorndog Před 28 dny +1

      The other thing I've noticed from several space games is oddly enough content bloat or trying to find ways to introduce players to that content in a meaningful way. This is the one thing I think Starfield of all things does better than No Man's Sky or ED or SC. Like getting new players into a complex game is challenging and in a space game thats even harder given they could just pick a direction and go. Starfield handles this by starting you on the ground and essentially being an RPG set in space rather than a space RPG and the only thing it forces you to interact with are the core gameplay elements and the intro of the main story. No Man's Sky for example railroads you into base building while still trying to allude to this vague story in the background to the point where you almost get punished for going off and doing something else, and ED/ SC kind of just plop you in the world with minimal tutorial although ED's tutorial has gotten a lot better.
      I'm really hopeful for Squadron 42 because I liked the polish and depth of SC, but it just felt empty without friends and a strong single player element would be amazing. In a similar vein I think if there were ways to allow players to easily link up for missions that could also be very fun. Just look at helldivers 2, which is for sure a different game completely but the community around it is fabulous and everyone is all in on doing the mission no matter the cost.

SC is probably the best we have so far but i think a lot of people are holding off on it because it 1. changes so much as its developed, and 2. is still pretty hard to run. and its a bit on the complex side. bit of a learning curve to get into. personally, i still love empyrion galactic survival. its also been in development for a long time, and there are some frustrations with the development, but its still an addicting experience that you can sink a lot of hours into. id also say NMS is up there as well in the "do anything" space game catagory.

    • @zackmac5917
      @zackmac5917 Před měsícem

      Man Elite was sooo close.
      It's really difficult to see how close it got, yet never made that final push.
      SC is close, but then has its own limitations. For me, the universe itself is important. The scale and freedom to explore and discover.
      The dream space game calls for space to really feel like space. Dauntingly huge, with seemingly endless freedom and discovery.
      E:D's foundation is light years ahead because you actually have a full galaxy, and modelled after our own real galaxy too. All the stars you see are really there, in their real positions, and you can travel to them. It's incredible. All true to life sized planets, etc.
      You cannot beat that foundation.
      Whereas SC is is just a faked galaxy with atm 1 single solar system to explore, and at launch, we'd be lucky if there is even going to be just 3. It is honestly pathetic in comparison, laughably far from the dream of an immersive true to life galaxy to exist in.
      Everything else though about SC, is very close and in many ways of course surpasses E:D. Like you said though, it also seems to be very complex.
      I wish Frontier would just pick up where they left with E:D and continue. Or just make a sequel. The market is there. It's a damn shame.
      But yeah, despite the lack of a real galaxy in SC and just the promise of a few solar systems at launch, it still looks amazing and if they can release it with VR support, then I would 100% be playing it.

    That's the main problem in trying to make these game multiplayer and basing most of the gameplay around that... If you lose the players, your game dies. Developers need to scale it back to 3 or four player teams... because there is only room in the market place for a couple of these games to succeed... You can still keep the scope of the game "massive" but not hamstring it by needing massive concurrent player counts. Gotta have some core meaty gameplay that feels properly rewarding.

      Even more importantly, if a game has multiplayer - especially PVP multiplayer - it'll also have a toxic community and griefers, and a de facto requirement of making everything run in realtime which is a problem for a space game because space is huge but fast realtime travel makes it feel small. So multiplayer comes with a huge detriment to gameplay.

Even a slight adjustment based on simplified equations could provide a good standin without requiring as much processing power, allowing for more ships and bullets.

    I backed Dual Universe because it seemed to be a game I wanted to play and learn from, especially the scripting potential and the original planetary mining, pinging the ore nodes using triangulation etc.
    Then they changed it because they couldn't get it working in multiplayer - surprisingly even on planet sized planets they couldn't keep enough ore to sustain even a small consistent player base.
    Planetary mining is now done by dropping a thing on the surface and it pulls out ore from thin air ever hour or twenty minutes or something like that - it's been a while since I played.
    I didn't even realise it had launched because it just fell off my radar. When I did I found out it was monthly subscription but I had three months free to redeem using the DAC coins thing from the alpha backer stage.
    It wasn't bad over-all I would just say it wasn't what was promised and the entire industrial loop was clunky with blueprints required for everything. Skill levels were also an issue even though they had EvE Online to draw from there's far far too many for what should be a PvP Trading game where loses matter but aren't crippling to the point of frustration.

    SC has the best graphics of any space game that I have seen to date. It's still buggy as hell, but the real problem is that the business model that they have introduced by extending development so long has infected other studios. No one will commit to finishing a game if they can still make a profit by making promises indefinitely. The few developers that have (Frontier, Hello, and Bethesda) are struggling and have started to implement some of the same strategies to recoup some of that lost "development" money. A bad precedent for sure. Here's to hoping that will change soon.

  • @cosmicmegafauna
    @cosmicmegafauna Před 6 dny

    I can answer why SC is not finished yet; it's being quietly smothered in its sleep as we speak by devs who are trying to change it into something it was never suppose to be. There were layoffs of some of the most competent developers early this year, leaving behind far less experienced devs to fill roles they really have no business being in. Their goal now is to try and shoe horn the mechanics from the single player (Squadron) into the MMO and call it "1.0".
    Ironically, this is because there are some large investors in the project that will get the option to pull their funding in the next couple of years. So after all these years of being crowd-funded explicitly to avoid the destructive influence of investors, the project is being done in by big investor money and what they think "appeals" to the broader market instead of sticking to what people paid for.

    Am I crazy? I want a single player Eve. The gameplay is so overlooked, but it's a great base for an RPG set in space.

    Most if not all of blockchain related things that might have at some point resemble a game disappeared seemingly overnight after it was proven that you actually can get in trouble for pulling a rug and blockchain tech will not protect you against legal consequences, which solidified my perception that it was a scam and nothing more

    I watched a movie and series commentor/critic do a vid outlining the problem with western media. The overall issue was western developers, be it of a show, movie, or game seem to drop all motivation to wright/complete their work once they get paid. The game of thrones writers had already been riding high on 7 seasons of cash so when the 8th and final season came around they just dropped the ball with little financial consequence to them personally. Star citizen has been in development for over a decade and pulled in over 700 million with no full game to show for it and as long as they can keep the tease going and keep edging their backers for more money, they have no real incentive to finish the product. The consequence of this mentality is obvious, we are left with incomplete shows and games, excellent stories that fall short at the end, many that don't get an end because once a series or franchise is seen as not profitable anymore it gets dropped and any story that was being told there either gets a rushed end at best or no end at all.
    The thing that is missing here is pride. Mediums like movies, shows, games, and even book series (looking at you George R.R. Martin) have, in conjunction with the short attention spans, have just become moneymakers and not artforms. An artist does not stop the art until they have completed it. A painter does not start a painting with exquisite detail, get paid for the piece half way through and then rush the other half resulting in a half beautiful masterpiece and a half child's painting. If they did the artist would a.) never get work again and b.) not be satisfied with the end result and so their pride will be hurt and their talent left unrealized. A true artist does not deliver lackluster art just because they got paid, they strive for a masterpiece with every piece, they seek a sharpening of their skills and perfection because their talent and pride will not allow them half measures or anything short of perfection. And those who consume their art greatly appreciate a complete work and respect an artist that has respect for their art and the artform... sadly what we have today is not art, just a cash grab and it shows.

      I agree, but would limit that to massively multiplayer, while games that allow small personal servers with a limited number of players are very much alive and often have huge playerbases that continue to play them for many years, if not decades.

    Infinity Battlescape interested me and I tried it. I refunded it after I realised that not only was the player count tiny but the game lacked any real goal aside from jump into the battle that is going on. Also there is no progression. Once you log out, you lose all of the money you gained and have to start again in a fighter or whatever. Even bombers pose pretty much no threat to anything larger than a corvette, so everyone goes for capital ships. Capital ships are moveable but guns fire automaticall. It looks like a nice idea but there is nothing going on beneath the hood, trust me.
