As someone from the uk, something that really makes me worry for the future of ukdrill is how much just the most awful sampling there is. I mean thats literally where central cee comes from, he added some shitty verses to songs people already liked. And the mainstream of ukdrill is literally just that right now. Its a miricale when you hear an original beat
The only time I've heard Central Cee was on Pink Pantheress' latest album and he straight up ruins the song with some of the worst lyrics I've heard in a while.

All he did was copy other drill rappers, use popular samples and water down the sound to make TikTok friendly music. His sound is literally catered to Americans and his attempts at sounding like a gangster feel so silly. Not saying the rest of the scene is particularly good rn either, but he has no right being the face of it.

He’s personable, charismatic, and he does have some decent bars here and there. I think the problem is that all the UK legends have been quiet or bad since around 2020 so CC’s rise to fame and the face of UK Drill is unsurprising. It could’ve been Headie or AJ if they dropped more consistently but both have kinda fallen off the map. Marketing to the US is really the only way to become the face of the UK because of the culture (UK drill is a direct adaptation of Chicago) so as a result CC’s sorta corny, bland style hits that much harder in the states because it’s something we understand

Worst hit song of the year is easily “I’m good” by David guetta. You could not get away from it whether you’re on the internet, shopping, out in public. It played EVERYWHERE. And it is TRASH. It’s just a copy and paste of the song “I’m blue” except it removes all the charm and personality, has a royalty free ass beat and some of the worst lyrics I’ve heard in my entire life. I really like Paint The Town Red, but like with all her songs post Planet Her, the lyrics are awful. It's just pure bitterness which is not only unwarranted, its also just fucking boring. Some of her old songs like Moo or Nintendhoe have fun lyrics, and even her more serious stuff like Kiss Me More or Better Than Me is well done.
So to summarize, according to Shawn’s logic, a song that uses sampling lacks personality, especially if he feels like the artist relies on it to carry the song.
thats not what he said its like you’re missing the point on purpose. sampling can be used in an interesting ways other than just cutting out part of a song and having it repeat the entire time. you can take parts of a song, reorganize it, speed it up or slow it slowed, and give it a whole new meaning, which is why sampling is actually such a creative art form. he doesnt think doja does that at all. i think he said the same thing about a lot of songs on nicki’s new album
