Charles is the most interesting of the lot. He is one of the most respectful and intelligent drivers in F1 and his humbleness is also shaped because of the tragedies that happened in his early life. If that interview is from 2019, Charles was new at Ferrari and Seb was the lead driver at the time. So he was going to defer to the 4x champ. Fast forward to this season and see the difference. Charles is the lead driver and definitely more confident. If Ferrari can get their shit together he'll be World Champ.

I think Charles reflects a lot in what he says, I feel that is especially because he’s not comfortable with his English, he’s a lot more fast speaking in French and Italian. As for his competitiveness, he pretty much pressures himself. He’s very graceful towards others and very very hard on himself. And as a fan, the thing that his grace and loyalty is what is hurting him on the racing. If he were more straight forward and selfish as Max, he would be world champion by now

Self criticism is an understatement, imo he is WAY too hard on himself. It's good to be able to own your mistakes and examine your own performance esp in an environment such as F1, and I know he's made some errors this year but Ferrari's woes are NOT all down to him (or Carlos) either. It’s almost half of the experience Max has in F1. If Max is a 11/10, Charles is a 8.5 or 9 rn and he’s only gonna get better I know it. IF he isn’t over driving for the team’s mistakes. Lewis and Charles are the ones to admit their mistakes. Max is one to always blame the car or someone else.

I don't think so because he always seems to think what he is doing is not enough and that he's not good enough so when he isn't first he is really harsh on himself saying that it is bad (because of how his dad "educated" him)

i thought it was odd you picked an interview early in his f1 career. then i thought it was really funny you picked a year he just spent being savage (in a good way!) on the track. lol. thumbs up on reaction. i'm not here to disagree. don't know if someone else has commented, but interesting is that ferrari has given him media training since he was 15? 16? not sure why. maybe because he was much more blunt as a teenager (see the story of il predestinato from sky italy).

The fact that Max and Charles have similar fairly humble personalities probably explains why their fans get along reasonably well. Well that and their rivarly hasn't been pushed to the extremes yet. Whereas Max fans vs Lewis fans tends to nasty very quickly. Of course Lewis' attitude makes perfect sense for someone who's been dealing with racism all his life and told he'd never amount to anything. Anyone coming from that can be forgiven for getting a bit look at me now and I sure showed them about things when they achieve succes. It's just not an attractive personality trait.

I totally agree with you, even though they didn't have the same experience, both of them went through difficult things at a young age (Max with his horrible father and Charles with the death of his love ones) so they maintain a certain modesty and have a lot of respect for each other wich is amazing !

Max en Charles are friends. He didn't yet have the same level of competition at this point in his career. When you are fighting at the forefront of F1 there are many games being played also emotionally to try and disbalance people. Being levelheaded and not respond with huge emotions to any kind of happening is very important in order to stay on top of the game. There is much more on the plate of these guys then you'd initially assume. This game entails huge dreams and people have to be pretty much on their toes probably in order to be able to perform at a such a high level, not only sportively buy also emotionally, spiritually etc. Charles indeed is an easy communicator I feel. His level of confidence is not as high as Max. He takes 'failure' harder on himself. He could possibly use it even more as an enhancer in trying to go next level. So possibly let it get to him less in a way that brings him down but rather moves him up.

I liked hearing your insights on these three drivers but one point I would like to raise is that all f1 drivers are very used to talking to the media. They have been doing it since racing karts as children so perhaps watching formal interviews is less insightful than some of the more fun and casual clips there are of them talking, where they show the less polished and professional version of themselves. Just a thought.

Having observed Charles for a few seasons now, especially this season, my impression is that he is too nice, too respectful and not the killer, who would put out his elbows to become world champion.
