We picked ours up at the local shelter based on her personality. They had her labeled as a Terrier mix. Nope, shes a full BMC, which I knew NOTHING about prior. But I will say they are the best family dogs. Very loving and fiercely loyal

Same here! They said ours was a shepherd/lab mix. No way - he is IDENTICAL to a BMC, right down to the tail. He is the best dog I've ever been around, and there is not even a second place.

@@bradleyboyer9979 We were also told our rescue (now about 18 mos.) was some kind of shepherd/lab mix. We did a DNA test that pegged her as Chow Chow/Shar-Pei with some shepherd and a whole bunch of other things. But a dog-identifying app, which uses photos, suggested both Carolina Dog and Black Mouth Cur--which is what led me to this video. Our Sookie looks *exactly* like the BMCs I see here and on other sites. I mean, she's a classic example of the breed, and not only appearance-wise but temperamentally. Glad to have discovered this breed but a little bit annoyed at the money we paid for a DNA panel that is emphatically wrong.

@@PatriceFitzgerald My experience mirrors yours. My dog looks and acts just like a BMC and came from Mississippi but DNA says she’s a mix of 7 different breeds. I’ve since learned the DNA tests often don’t identify this breed. She’s a love and incredibly active and curious but sensitive. She does bark at anyone that walks by our home - definitely territorial but friendly once introduced. Great with my teens but chases our cat. We have to keep them separated by floor. Luckily I have 3 acres so she has lots of room to roam. I feel so fortunate to have rescued this loyal and loving breed.

I am looking after a Black Mouth Cur and she is tremendous. My friend travels and when he's away, he leave her with me. She is affectionate, intelligent, loyal, protective, respectful and obedient. I take her for daily hikes and she loves to play. I love her. I would recommend this breed to anyone who is active and can afford to spend time with the dog.

We adopted our black mouth cur from a shelter three years ago as a pup when I retired. She is loyal and obedient, my wife and I love her mischievous side and she has a lot of character. She does need a lot of exercise and loves to chase a ball. We spend 30 minutes in the morning, playing when she is done chasing she runs for the door on her own, gets a fresh drink then a nap. By 3pm she is dropping her ball at my feet telling me she is ready to go again. She is great with other dogs and children, but can play rough so my grandson has learned not to get her to crazy lol. She is my best friend and I'm glad we get to spend all day together. We always take her on vacations and she loves walking in public and is very curious to new surrounding.

I grew up with curs. My uncle had a whole kennel full of em for over ten years of my childhood. They were hunting dogs but we treated them as pets and they didn’t mind. With the exception of maybe two or three of them they all wanted to play with us but when he cranked up his truck they all went krazy because they knew it was time to go to work. I still think about those days and I will always have a special place in my heart for them.

We recently lost our 10 yr old pit mix to cancer (she may have been part cur). 2 weeks later, we adopted a 6 month female BMC from the shelter. They had her labeled as a labrador retriever. She is red with black muzzle, white on her chest and finger/toe tips, webbed toes, curved tail and medium floppy ears. She is very smart and very loving. We already took her to the pet store and she listened and very gently greeted people. She didn't try to veer away or drag me along (which is something my pit mix would do). I hope our BMC stays with us for a very long time!

Just rescued a 55 lb 1 yr old suspected BMC. The rules of 3, 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to test boundaries and 3 months to settle, didn’t even come close to applying. Only have had him for 3 weeks but he has already learned so many skills and is already ready for obedience. Can second the calm but firm correction but will say that ours is fine in an apartment, getting about 5 miles a day with heavy training and puzzles mixed in. He is also great with our 10 lb 18 yr old and is learning to accept the cat’s boundaries.😂

Noelle on my channel is an Alabama red. we got her at a shelter at 2 yrs old near chicago with a paper trail leading back to bama less than a month earlier. she's my girl and is amazingly intelligent. she understands full sentences and although i was basically a first time owner, i had been around and trained a few dogs. she's protective and territorial as they say, and we have a huge back yard that she does laps in every day as well as a couple long walks. for a southern dog, she prefers 50-60f temps to 70-80f. maybe it's just because near chicago she gets a full undercoat every winter and sheds like crazy to lose it and be comfortable in the summer? who knows, she's our girl and she's a 55 lb family love doge.

Our BMC is a great dog. Someone dropped her off at the shelter when she was a pup and she was later transferred to a rescue. I saw her photo online and that's how we got her. She's really affectionate and is smart and a great watch/guard dog. She took some getting used to because I only had little dogs before this, but we have a big back yard now so there's room for her to run. She's good with other dogs, and will stand her ground when around one she doesn't know. She's also good on the leash and doesn't pull very much. So glad we found her!

IDK what id do without my Cur Tucker. The most affectionate loving dog ever and so prone to separation anxiety and a howler and moaner when I sing hahaha. So smart. Never once used the bathroom in the house not once. So protective and guards our home. And never had a dog dream sleeping and kick bark and how so much. Almost every time he goes to sleep he is kicking and barking or growling at a squirrel or cat I imagine. We have a huge old victorian in a historic district in a tiny NC mounting town so he goes in and out the backdoor and in the fenced large back yard all he wants and wears himself down and after a good run around the yard, he sleeps and kicks and growls again in it. I believe he thinks he is n heaven...I hope he does. If I had a kid I would treat him no different. YEah my BMC Tucker is like my kid and smartest dog ever but hard-headed about what he wants to be hardheaded about. If he doesn't want to do something no amount of anything will make him reconsider. He had been left behind when a puppy so he was a rescue and has especially bad separation anxiety because of that not to mention it is in his breed to be that way anyway by nature so he is double upset to be left behind or not taken with you when you leave. Mine is a typical look of course and soft hair but more course on the back. black mouth and eyes and white on chest. And is a big howler and moaner more so than ever barks he howls or moans. He hates motorcycles or mopeds and will wake from a dead sound sleep when he hears one and cats top he wants to chase bite and eat everyone he sees along with squirrels. But again the most loving affectionate dog ever. Always wanting kisses, hugs, or cuddles from me. My last one Dixie was the best dog I ever had. So smart and loving too but she was meaner and overprotective which I actually enjoyed. What is the point of having a dog if it doesn't love and want to protect you? I love her for old age 21 years old BTW and got this big guy as a puppy 3 days after losing her. I couldn't sleep in this big old house by myself. Single and no children or siblings he is my family. And sleeps right by my side, or half on me every night.

I’ve had a BMC for almost 10 years. He’s an awesome dog, but he hates cats and will chase anything that moves - including kids on bicycles. So be aware if you’re looking to get one. Mine is okay with the cats now, but he showed up at my house as a puppy and tried to kill my outside cat. I couldn’t tell you how many times he got after her, she bloodied his nose - and he still tried to chomp on her. They’re very loyal dogs, but mine is not very friendly to family outsiders and Hates other dogs - with the exception of my terrier that he grew up with.

Just realized our dog is mostly Black Mouth Cur, I don't even think the rescue shelter suggested that but whatever. Our BMC was about 3 months old when we got her, she is sweet, but her agility and periodic aggression really stood out. This breed can definitely be stubborn and disinterested in training, so getting some professional training with the breed is recommended. Sadly our pup has an injured right leg from heavy play with another dog and it sucks because this breed is incredibly agile and playful, really hoping we don't have to pay for an MRI/surgery but we'll see. I think the BMC is really a beautiful, loving breed but I do believe they may take more training work than other dogs and I wouldn't really recommend the breed to someone unwilling or unable to make that investment.

Mine came straight out of the Arkansas woods. Literally. A fellow Nomad was camped there when she came out of the woods looking for help. No identification and the authorities said to just leave her in the woods which my friend wouldn't even think of doing. Long story short, she has a new home with me living out of my van in the deserts of Arizona. It's just been her and I for 16 days now for bonding purposes. I make her food and we go for 2 long walks daily. Will get that up to 3 when I get in better condition. We've tracked Coyotes that came into our camp one night and the next morning at daylight. We go through and mark their territory to let them know that they haven't intimidated us. I'm equipped to dispatch but only if necessary and unavoidable. But they want to eat my companion and I won't let that happen. I lucked out big time and I think she did too.
