i was so pissed off at d underwoods when they asked doug to take the blame, they had one loyal soldier and essentially asked him to drink poison, it was so frustrating, but as the man said, it's hard to stay angry at frank

But then somehow Doug's taking it as like the sin from killing Rachel. When Doug revealed to Leann that he killed Zoe and why he killed Zoe, the story is more relevant to Rachel's involvement.

Did you miss that Doug was in on it from the beginning? He was the one delivering birthday cards to Hammerschmidt on Frank's behalf. That "drink the poison" scene was to keep Claire out of the loop until the end.

does anyone have a theory as to why doug is so loyal in the first place i rewatched the season where doug started drinking again and it was weird how he was doing everything to get back in the folds of the underwoods and it was clear frank didn't want anything to do with him but his silence and doug could tell and still fought his way back in does frank have dirt on him that I've missed?

I thought this season was incredibly inconsistent. It had so many great moments, but they were just sprinkled throughout a bunch of unnecessary and boring stories. Tom Yates just ruined every episode he was in, Hammerschmidt isn't even a likable good guy because he's such a pompous jerk, which made the amazing moments in the series that much better because the other plot points were just so disinteresting.

    • @MatthewRogers

You tell me you didn´t like his wannabe edgy philosopher attitude and his best quote "twilight active" and Claire talking about what he does in his sleep? Yeah me too.
I liked the scene at the end of the regular election when Hammerschmidt already was celebrating his victory in his mind and was then all like "How does he do this?"

I think Hammerschmidt was written to give us that exact impression on him. He knows the truth and is fighting for it, to uncover to everyone a dangerous president and yet to us, he has a bad image. It's like how politicians antagonize the media.

Don't get me wrong, liked this season and love the series. It's excellent television. But this season was by far the weakest. It had the most to offer in terms of drama and plot twists, but it was so all over the place with way too much going on, shit being way too difficult to follow, and the Underwoods throughout were so naive in who they trusted with information. They kept just telling people shit that they didn't need to and it was so obvious that it would come back to bite them. Also, the entire season was basically, "Frank is in trouble, frank figures a way out of trouble by getting himself into more trouble" and repeat. I feel as if they made this season just to extend the life of the show instead of following the natural conclusion the story was following. I feel as if this season should have been the last. Even though I absolutely love the show and this season was GOOD, it wasn't up to the normal standard that we've come to expect.

    @gavinmcdonnell6918 Před 7 lety +31

I thought this was by far the weakest season.
The ending of Frank resigning didn't make sense for his character.
Tom Yates was entirely pointless to the point I'm shocked he didn't die sooner.
It just began to repeat earlier seasons storylines (Claire and Frank have a marriage problem, the God damn election)
The promise of last season with a country at war was never fullied. instead we have to wait for ANOTHER season for a war.
Hammerschmit didn't do anything until the back quarter of the season and still it felt like all he did was pointless.
They didn't explore any of the ideas they hinted at with Frank's character (Frank losing Corbin which I felt was a big deal for him, and Frank slowly going mad with power)
And most of the season was just filler. Just every one waiting around for results and not really any cool manipulation movies.
This season sucked. It was far worse than season 3. I'm surprised people like it as much but hey to each their own.

  • @mrcalista722

I disagree with Matt Rodgers' assertion that rank Underwood had "no power" at the end of this season. Ex-presidents have a LOT of power. The first George Bush got his son elected president. Bill Clinton exerted a lot of influence for years after leaving office.

Matthew Rogers - Oh, I think any suggestion that Frank Underwood is going to prison is just puritanical wishful thinking, my friend. Claire will eventually pardon him. But she's learned the Jerry Ford lesson - namely, you don't make a pardon your first act as an unelected President.

Frank talked to Walker about how presidents act while and while not in power. I believe Walker did do good, but he never did enough. Frank will make a name for himself by possibly ruining the Underwood name, and also making the American people better at understanding who wants what. This season was inconsistent because it was all part of a plan of Frank's, and he had to have had a plan B if Claire would deny pardoning him after the whole plan got done. Frank still has skills, friends, and supporters

I feel the Season 5 was all over the place. The high point being the first episode with Frank's speech to the Congress from where the season went to being dull, confusing and full of plot holes. During the speech which set a tone in the first episode where he says "I will not yield", I thought wow, this can only get better from here. On the contrary, Frank is seldom incharge of the situation as he should have been, and was during S1 & S2.
The season never peaked for me after Episode 1. Not to mention the Elysian fields and the political quagmire was an unencessity. Mark Usher is a convenient character introduced to explain plot twists and plot holes. The only other non-dull moment is Frank waiving his executive privilege and speaking out in front of the committee - and that comes in at E12 or 13. And in the last episode, I am left wondering, was all this really required to make Claire the President, which he could have done sooner without the uninteresting scheming and mess involved.
TBH, Kevin Spacey aka Frank Underwood, was and had been the strong point of this series - specially with him breaking the 4th wall - all along till S4(even though he was less so in S4). Sadly, the directors/writers just chose to keep him on the sidelines in S5.

TyrannosaurHex Agreed, Frank's the best part of the show, especially a powerful Frank, and he was never established as POTUS, and he'll be even more diminished next season as a resigned former POTUS. The focus will shift to Claire, who I like, but not nearly as much as Frank. No need for all of the self-sabotage just to make Claire Pres.

exactly what I was thinking. It's absolutely crazy that he'd feed hammersmidt clues implicating himself and/or doug in a MURDER to get out of being president when there was already that thing about election tampering or he could have just resigned. Such stupid and unrealistic plot writing.

After the end of season 4 I was so pumped to see more, only to find that fifth season is way lower than where the expectations were. I am not sure if it was the purpose, but all the perfectly planned steps Frank was taking in the previous seasons were suddenly gone. There was simply nothing the main couple would be chasing, no position, no main goal they wanted to achieve. The season reminded me of a dog chasing cars when the dog is finally able to catch one and suddenly without any idea what to do with it. I was hoping that after fourth season Frank will somehow want to slowly turn into an unlimmited dictator who rose up from terror and chaos made by ICO and unstable and shady situation in the USA, but all we got was an old man who lost his footing and kept pushing harder to stumble more... Not a way to go for season six I hope

It seems like the last two storylines of the show have taken a Season and a Half to play out. S4 saw the climax of the S3 storyline and the launch of the S5 storyline. That's why this season was so steady because it covered the 2nd and 3rd Act. This season proved that nothing can destroy the Underwoods except the Underwoods. I am extremely hopeful that S6 will see a final clash between the two that will bring this House of Cards they've built tumbling down in true Shakespearean power.

Honestly at first sight i thought that Claire has turn on Frank, but after thinking on it a while, that cannot be true. I think that the way she didn't pardon Frank is so right, cause she just announced war(which is a big risk for her presidency), so she couldn't pardon him cause the media, the House and the Senate would suddenly attack her. As she said before, she'll do that in a right time and place(or at least I hope so).
Anyway, in my opinion, this is the best season of the show so far.
Can't wait to see how all will develop in season 6.

I don't think there is a real chance of getting Frank jailed. It turned out that Hammerschmidt hat most of his information from Frank, so progressing will be much harder for him and Frank also managed to shut down the investigation committee. Claire wont reveal his secrets either for her own interest and doug ist just completely loyal.

    Questions for Season 6:
    - Will Clare pardon Frank?
    - Will Clare divorce Frank?
    - Will Doug tell all to the House Committee?
    - Will Clare be impeached? And if so will VP Usher pardon her?
    - Will Cathy Durrant wake up? If so will she remember what happened and give evidence against Frank?
    - Did Leanne survive the car crash? If so will she talk?

  • @avburns
    @avburns Před 7 lety +1

Are we sure Leann is dead? Frank sort of checked out of her "movie" before actually seeing her death scene.
Frank told us if he wasn't pardoned that he would kill Claire and doesn't he have Tom's body literally on ice? Plus, he went out of his way to have all of his White House connections eliminated by Usher; so I think Claire is potentially more vulnerable than she might think.
I worry about the pardon looming over his head (and Doug being ham-stringed by an ankle monitor) but I expect Frank to make a makeshift cabinet and start waging war outside the White House next season.

Two comments: I don't think you mentioned Seth, the press secretary. Shortly after killing Tom with a drink laced w poison, and before LeaAnn dies, Claire asks Seth if he wants to have a drink with her. So does she poison him too? Second, I agree w the comment below that I thought the end was too rushed and overly crammed with drama. Part of what makes HOC great is it's pace and ability for proper multiple pilot developments. The end missed that mark.

It annoys me how so many characters are introduced and then suddenly moved aside and never discussed again, or given some off screen death or something. Similarly with GoT, these shows forgot what made them so good. Franks thirst for power and his way to get it. The whole idea that he sabotages his own downfall just felt like it was a way to explain all the plotholes, like "oh, Frank did it". Not sure why, but he did it. Glad Tom was FINALLY killed off, but hey kept him around for way too long. When they had such a good character like Le-Anne and they give her such an unsatisfying death. Overall a pretty disappointing season. I liked the Conway plot and liked his downfall and the whole election scenario - I watch this show for politics. But knowing HoC they'll never ever ever mention him or his plot again.

Anybody notice when Usher waved to the camera? (4th wall) just like the first episode of HoC when Frank did so at Walkers inaugural address. Thus most likely foreshadowing what Frank did and Usher will become the president and manipulate Claire.

They should have focused on creating the terror like they said they would instead of spending so much time wrapping up that damn election. That's what I got hyped up for at the end of last season. A clash of Titans between Frank and Kasparov would have been much more interesting than seeing Frank just waiting for things to happen. Frank is what made the show great in the first place, it's a shame they didn't stick to their guns.

    Spoiler Alert:
I loved the season, it needed some fixing.
I didn't like what they did with the election. I thought it was interesting, but that 2 month later crap was a bit "wtf". I also wish it was a bit more realistic with that electoral map.. I mean don't get me wrong it was pretty accurate, but he lost Colorado, his home state, and Arizona. The more Democratic bastion in the west.
I loved Conway's arc.. I liked seeing him self destruct.
Down to the end... I absolutely hated how Frank resigned. Hated it... spent his whole life in public service (in a political show) got to the highest office, and then just decided to resign just cause he's having an existential "power is on the outside" crisis lol.
I thought it would've been so much better if Doug really was going against the Underwoods. They really could've taken care of the scandal with forged evidence and the actual testimonies his allies gave (they seemed to be winning) and they could've taken care of the Zoe thing the same way (if Doug was still loyal.. if not, it would add hard choices to his character next season).
I'm open to discussion, there is so much to talk about but I'll leave off.
final thing.. who will be Clair's vp... I'm casting a vote for Romero.. it would fit Usher's goal of getting Romero to be President.
(ps. I thought it was brilliant to see Romero getting more power and at Franks inaguration being close to the power "real-estate"

It will be really interesting to see what Frank will do from now on indeed. But my guess would be that Usher will make his way towards the presidency, putting an end to both the Underwoods and the series itself. Could we be approaching a presidential divorce? What happened to the Conways? Is Hammerschmidt still going to go on with his story? Did Durant die? Those are some questions for the next season. Keep making these videos. They're brilliant.

Matt .... nice sign off. Quite crisp with a touch of panache.
Them Underwood monsters are finally on a more even playing field. I think Jane Davis has positioned Frank in some sort of position of power that he'll have to capitalize on rather quickly before Jane finds a way to get someone to off him for good.
I also love that Claire breaks the 4th wall with a bit of sneer. She's from old money. And like Jane Davis, Claire can't help but feel that money grubbing people like Frank and Netflix audience are simply not of her ilk. However, Mark Usher just might have the type of pedigree Claire's snooty sense of propriety might finally approve. I can foresee Mark being more than just a veep and get some play between sheets.
Honestly, with Frank's murder trials occupying much of the next season, the nation might rightly cheer for Claire to finally have a suitable suitor. Cuz afterall, Claire only killed one, extremely pathetic excuse for a man, that apparently no one but a white house tour guide will miss.
Also Doug is going to get apoplectic after finding out Frank had LeAnn killed. And, of course, let's not forget about the huge pile of caca Jane Davis is gone dump down Frank's throat once Sec'y of State Durant comes out of her coma. So sorry Matthew, but it's going to get a lot lot worse for Frank as his house of cards come tumbling down, for good!

I was hoping this was the last season, then shit started hitting the fan and prolonged for no reason, Frank making huge childish(not tying up loose strings) mistakes I've never seen him do he lost all his disciplines, like not getting rid of mark usher after using him to win Doug even says that's what they normally, not gaining the support a president needs in congress he even picks fights, not reorganizing his administration and culling out the traitors when they plot a coup, he even let up on the war proposal the unifying against a "common enemy" tactic that could have gotten his presidency back on the road, the endless new non vetted faces that kept making it into the Underwood's inner circle I've never seen them ever behave this way, and worse yet the cop out "it was all part of my plan" bullshit, Claire is a one dimensional fool she's so indecisive this season she's normally the one with some sense but was so weak at the end
