How to test Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), BMW E36M43

  • Symptom in my M43:
    Everything normal when engine on but the car doesn't move. The symptom will appear when the car was move and the engine suddenly shutdown. it's happen repeatedly and can't predict.
    Terminal test values:
    1) Terminal 1 and 3 = approx. 4 kilo ohms
    2) Terminal 1 and 2 (with throttle rotated from idle to high position) = test values must shows continuously variable from (approx.) 1 - 4 kilo ohms

    Old TPS:
    1-3 pins = Normal 4 KΩ
    Result (4.817KΩ)
    1-2 pins = Rotate 1/4KΩ
    Result stand by (5.308KΩ)
    Max Rotation (1.663KΩ)
    ________________
    New TPS:
    1-3 pins = Normal 4 KΩ
    Result (4.188KΩ)
    1-2 pins = Rotate 1/4KΩ
    Result stand by (4.445KΩ)
    Max Rotation (1.448KΩ)
    Incredible that this difference be relevant for the car.

    My e46 m3 TPS tested 900 to 5.3k ohms, full rotation off car, and works fine. Car ran ruff with loss of power. I cleared the 9 old fault codes in the computer and it runs like a new car. Common problem on some cars.

    my m44 engine on cold crank wont start!..but if i turn ignition off then on again and crank engine starts straight away!..could this be the TPS!..it also reads 4 oms

    Hi there. M43B18 engine. When I take my foot out of throttle or when I press the clutch, rpms are not going down unless the car stops (at a traffic light) or going up and down (always above 1k to even 3k rpms so it doesn't seem to be related with idle). Any idea if it's something TPS related or something else? Thank you in advance.

      @@motoren_works thanks for the quick reply. I've cleaned my icv in the past and finally replaced it about a year ago. Is there any other possible causes or should I look to the icv again?

      @@koarjs1643 i see, i think the icv is okay
      Other possibility are bad vacuum hose (replace) or the AFM flap movements is not good (clean).

    Hi guys I got a question. I drive a E46. The engine code is the M43B19 it's a 318i. I have similar problems like you. Sometimes the engine shut down if i push the clutch. I did test this sensor like in this video showed. In the first reading i have 4.25 and the second is 4.68. What you think this sensor is failed?

      Lars Stimpel hello too. The 1st reading is 4.25 kohm = good. 2nd reading max. 4.68 kohm = good, how about the minimum = ?. Based on the max. Value (without the minimum value in the 2nd reading), i think your TPS is in good condition. But i don't know, whether this methode is suitable for E46M43 also.
      The engine shut down if you push the clutch is the same as my experience before i replace my old TPS.
      My suggestion as always, to make sure if your TPS was good or bad, please borrow other good TPS and try it.

    I got a similar symptoms you mentioned in comment below. Did you try to diagnose DME with computer (eg. INPA or DIS)? I've checked errors in my DME and got nothing whereas my engine randomly got rough idle and started to turnoff lately (usually when stopping the car on idle). Usually no symptoms while car is not moving.

      Filip Wiącek No, i did not diagnose the DME. Your BMW engine code is M43? If yes, Have you tried to check the AFM flap movement? Try to check the flap movement. If the movement are not smooth, i think the problem is from there. I hope it can help and correct me if i'm wrong

      To be exact I own m43b18, so this the same engine as yours. My AFM works correctly, flap movement is smooth, air sensor reads correct values. But to be sure I replaced it for couple of weeks with another one which I'm pretty sure is in good condition (it works well in another, same engine) but there was no difference. This week I'll replace my TPS with the one which works correctly on another car. I'll let you know if this helps.

      No, not really. I read some materials about INPA software and how to read values which it shows and it seems that I got some unmetered air leak, because my fuel adaptation exceeds the limits - multiplicative is around +40 and additive around +10 whereas shall be around 0 as far as I understand. But cannot find any place where air leak might be, especially that main air hoses are brand new ori BMW. I'm going to check in detail my intake manifold and gasket between it and and the head cylinder, as well as o-rings on injection valves and DISA - I cannot see there might be some other parts that might cause the air leaks in this engine. Maybe you got some idea?

    hi..my current old tps reading m43 engine
    1-3 pins = 3.988KQ
    1-2 pins= 4.668KQ
    still in working condition? ned to replace

    Halo mas, saya mau tanya dong. Ini e36 saya mesinnya M43. Kondisinya kalau ac off : idle pagi2 mesin agak ngayun. Tapi kalau sudah jalan dikit lalu berhenti, idle stabil di 800-850. Kalau AC on : Idle saya naik - turun di 850-900. Saya coba bersihin idle up, pastikan selang airflow rapat, masih naik turun. Kalau jalan kesannya kompressor AC gak mati2 otomatisnya. Tapi kadang mau. Kalau matiin ac, stabil lg. Pernah saya coba reset tps kaya trik2 di youtube itu, eh sempet stabil. Tapi muncul lg kalau abis jalan. Bbm pakai BP 92. Airflow pernah distel sih. Tapi blm service. Kalau dari buka tutupnya saya blm cek. Kira2 apakah tps yg kena atau idle up yah?

      Sepengalaman sy, idle ngayun waktu ac on, sumber masalahnya dari idle up. Kalau sudah parah, idle kadang ngayun meskipun tidak ngidupin ac.
      Coba bersihin dulu idle up nya. Atau bisa ngetest minjem idle up punya teman yg sehat.

      I believe it could also cause you not to be able to "stomp test" retrieve trouble codes.
      Did you experience this Motoren_works?

      @@brandonrobishaw7606 Does the stomp test mean moving the accelerator pedal/ revving the engine? if yes, engine works normally as long as the car is not moving

      @@motoren_works actually no. On these cars you can do a test "stomp test"
      Place the ignition switch in the second position where the lights come on the dash but the car doesn't start
      Then immediately put the accelerator pedal to the floor and released five times in a row
      Wait a few seconds... The check engine light will flash in sequence of the trouble codes or an all clear code.
      Excellent for trouble shooting no scanner needed
      Won't work if your throttle positioning sensor is bad or if your throttle cables aren't adjusted properly (test needs to have full range with a stop at each end)
      Search" BMW stomp test " you will get much better explanation

      Untuk permasalahan yg ditimbulkan TPS di E36 sy sudah sy tuliskan di deskripsi video ini om. Sepengalaman sy, untuk kondisi boros di E36 M43 biasanya ada hubungannya dg setting AFM dan CO

    Om tps sy e46 m43 diatas 5 k ohm... engine sih ga pernah tiba2 mati. Tp klo masuk D rpm turun n agak getar, klo Ac on sih ga getar walau rpm turun. Tarikan awal berat n kyknya agak boros. Fix dari tps ya?

      Saya tidak bisa langsung menyimpulkan bahwa sumber masalah fix berasal dr TPS om. Karena permasalahan di satu mobil belum tentu sama dg yg lain. Kalo mau mastiin, coba minjem tps punya teman om, jadi kalo salah diagnosis gak rugi jg. Yg paling tepat sebenarnya di scan gitu om.

    Om mau tanya,
    Waktu mesin on posisi idle ada di rpm 900-1000,
    Nah ketika saya nyalakan AC rpm akan drop ke 700-800.
    Kadang juga ketika mesin sudah dipakai lama (panas) ketika posisi idle atau waktu pergantian kopling mesin sering mati. Dan gas sedikit lemot.
    Itu apakah TPS ya om?

    Noted:saya belum cek TPS seperti tutorial, karena keterbatasan alat

      baiknya di test dulu TPS nya om. rpm drop sedikit waktu nyalain AC masih normal, asal dropnya tidak ekstrim dan terus terusan. jika kondisi rpm dropnya ekstrim bahkan cenderung engine mati, sumber masalah biasanya dari ICV/ idle control valve

      om, mau tanya, ini solusinya gmn om? e36 m43 saya sama persis kalo pake ac, injek kopling, rpm drop dan kalo paksa di gas malah mledak2 di knalpot kadang lemot.

    Mas habis copot dan bersihin pedal gas e36 m43, econometer (jarum penunjuk yg dibawah rpm) kog jadi ngaco ya bergeraknya.. .
    Padahal sebelumnya pergerakannya bagus, bisa ngikutin seberapa banyak pedal gas di injek.
    Yg perlu di perbaiki apanya mas ya ?

      Penyakitnya kok aneh mas. Sy beberapa kali lepas copot pedal gas tidak pernah sampai membuat jarum econometer jadi error. Selain bongkar pedal, mungkin omnya ngerjain yg lainkah?
      Coba cek konektor dan kabel di belakang instrument cluster, siapa tau kendor

    How can I find out if I have a m42, m43 or m44 engine in my 318i 1994 bmw?

      I think you can find out from the production year (if you never swap your bmw engine) and the engine shape. M42 = 1989-1996; M44 = 1996-2000; M43 = 1991-2002 (2000-2002 use in E46).
      M42 and M44 is DOHC, the engine shape quite same. Honestly, this engine in my country is rare, i saw the M44 engine twice. The difference shape between M44 and M43 can be seen from the cylinder head.
      M43 (sohc) has a smaller cylinder head shape than M44/M42 (dohc).
      In my country, E36 M43 began to be marketed in 1996. So, if you live in my country, i can predict your 1994 bmw has a M42 engine. CMIIW

    Halo om, sy jg cek TPS BMW e46 m43 sy. Nunjukin angka 8.4 kohm. Kok lebih tgi dari 4 kohm y om??? Sy udh ganti tp tetep d angka 8 om. Gmn ya om? Trims

      Sy kurang paham apakah nilai di e36 dg di e46 harusnya sama atau tidak.

    Mas mau tanya lagi, kalau rpm lambat turun ada pengaruh drmana yah?jdi aga serem juga klo gigi ga di netralin mobil jd jalan sendiri..rpm setiap abis ngegas terus lepas nyantol di rpm 1300an...balik normal klo kondisi direm dan berhenti..mohon info..

      @@motoren_works selama ini aman aja sih flapnya ga seret om..bsa dr tps ny g yah?atau icv?yg jelas klo icv saya cabut konektornya klo saya gas baliknya cepet ke bawah normal sbntar terus langsung naik ke normal...klo bgtu ke detect scan ga yah?soalnya saya setiap scan ga ada fail.. -.-

      @@wira1512 biasanya sih kalo sudah di scan bakalan kelihatan error2nya om, biasanya ya om :).
      Sy share pengalaman saja nih om. ICV error, biasanya muncul ketika AC on, rpm naik turun.
      TPS error, mobil sering mati mendadak, tp ketika di starter lg mobil nyala normal.
      Saran sy coba dibersihin dulu poros AFM, ICV, dan throttle body pake contact cleaner. Siapa tau setelah kotoran2 di part tersebut dibersihin rpm bisa normal kembali

    may car runs fine then sometimes almost shuts down when stopping or in traffic the idle becomes erratic sometimes the car wants to shutdown or limps

      @@motoren_works i've already cleaned the icv, throttle flap, checked for vacuum leaks cleaned the cam sensor new original maf it went away for awhile then it came back i checked the brake booster hose coz it happens only when i step on the brakes it has cracks i replaced it. it went away now it's happening again

      @@motoren_works Thank you! Ive been having idle problems with warm engine. Turns out this was not connected and when connected iddle is even worse. I guess Imma try clean it up and see if it works. Thanks again!

    Fix sepertinya tps saya bermasalah.
    1-3 ; 4.90 ohm
    1-2 : 5.50 ~ 1.77 ohm
    Ada saran beli tps dimana? Apa subtitusi atau copotan ori atau baru kw?
    Apa sekalian baru ori tp mahal 😅😅
    Bisa coba bersihin gk ya? 😂

      @@motoren_works , oh iya om, saya ga sengaja menemukan, waktu mesin hidup sekitar 700 rmp, yah brebet gitu, saya buka tutup tangki bahan bakar, sketika itu jg rpm stabil bnget 900rpm. Nah tp sy tmbh pusing, apkh sistem tangki ada vent nya? Klo ad mngkin tersumbat gitu...? Dmn letaknya klo ad..? Jd analisa saya tekanan atmosfer mmbantu kerja pompa. Aneh jg nih om tekanan atmosfer yg ga seberapa bs bntu pompa. Tolong analisanya om.

      @@zenfatkho8282 kalo buka tutup tangki kemudian rpm jadi normal, belum pernah mengalami om jadi gak bisa ngasih pendapat.
      Mau nanya: disekitaran tutup bensin tercium bau bbm? Kondisi selang2 vakum di mesin gimana? Fuel pump kondisi masih bagus atau sudah sekarat?

      @@zenfatkho8282 ada yg kelupaan, coba cek jg fuel expansion tank (harus buka inner fender plastik diatas roda belakang kanan dekat pipa input bbm). Cek selang2nya, tp sy gak tau apakah ngefek ke problem bmw omnya.

    Mas, m43 saya kalau engine lagi idle kemudian saya gas ke 2000rpm kemudian dilepas dia ngedrop ke 500/600 rpm sebentar baru naik ke 800 an rpm mas. Jafi mesin sempet geter sedikit itu kenapa ya mas kira2. Mohon bantuan mas e

      @@kingtechreviewer3423 sudah bersihin part2 yg kira2 ada penumpukan debu/kotoran mas, misal ICV/idle up, throttle body, cek selang2 vakum (kalau sudah jelek ganti). Tetapi kalau sudah cek dan bersih2 ternyata gejala masih muncul, coba dicek pake scanner mas, siapa tahu ketahuan errornya dimana?

    Pak, e36 m50b20tu saya saat ac hidup trus injak kopling rpm nya tertahan di rpm 2000. Sudah ganti tps baru masih belum baik, apa yang harus dilakukan?

      aldo muhammad wirangga kalo di M43 sy, TPS rusak mengakibatkan mesin mati ketika injak kopling dan mau ganti gigi. Kalo M20 sy kurang paham pak, tp coba cek air mass dan idle up nya, kalo kotor coba bersihkan. Cek juga selang2 vakum, takutnya ada yg bocor. Kalo pengen lebih valid kira2 part mana yg error, mending di scan ke bengkel/teman yg punya scanner

      Ada problemkah mas? Kalau masih aman tetap dipakai saja. Untuk jaga2 bisa beli buat cadangan, jika tiba2 muncul problemnya

      @@motoren_works sering terjadi setelah saya setting airflow,mobil jadi Ndut Ndut dan mbrebet serta boros,lalu reset TPS mobil pake jalan normal tetapi setelah kendaraan off agak lama lebih dari satu jam ,begitu starter pake jalan Ndut Ndut mbrebet, reset TPS normal dan berulang seperti itu ..
      Iya ini masih dipakai sembari nunggu TPS datang

      Kalau mobil jadi brebet dan boros setelah setting AFM, kemungkinannya salah setting. Kayaknya settingannya terlalu rich.

      @@motoren_works reset manual saya ikuti petunjuk langkah nya di Grup FB E36 memang bukan untuk M43 tapi saya coba kok berhasil,ini tadi seharian dipake jalan normal tanpa mbrebet...
      Dan satu lagi Mas lidah airflow yg nyenggol lapisan Carbon cara settingnya bagaimana ??
