Mexican Day of the Dead

- In 2015 the British Museum celebrated the Days of the Dead in a four-day festival full of colour, music, storytelling and art. This beautiful documentary introduces the history and evolution of the Mexican Day of the Dead, from its pagan beginnings to the multi-faceted ceremony it is today.
Artist Betsabee Romero, curator Laura Osorio Sunnucks and paleobiologist Omar Regalado Fernandez talk about how every year the dead are remembered and summoned by the observances of the living who cook, eat drink, make music and decorate their graves - by 'the spirit of things, and the love of us'.
The Days of the Dead festival was at the British Museum from 30th October to 2nd November 2015.

Yeah, but it's been the Night of the Dead for centuries. And it's been so, because it is at night when the dead come to join the living in the cemetery where their bodies lay. That's why all cemeteries are lit and filled at night. But the idiotic catholic church could never bring that beautiful pagan celebration into a religious syncretism...

Love for our departed and calendula flowers to remember them. They are always with us, and when we are gone, we will rejoin with our beloved departed.
Been celebrating Dia Del Muerto for years and it's barely catching up in the U.S. I'm just not sure how the U.S will start commercializing this sacred holiday my family have been celebrating for years.
It’s starting in schools mate. I’ve got a project on this so maybe it’ll spread to more kids in the U.S.
Mexico has commercialized it, it was never the circus it has become. I'm from Oaxaca Mexico and it is a solemn Holiday,
@@teresaguerra7532 How did it used to be?
@@teresaguerra7532 I suppose that Disney and Coco had a lot to do, but of course the movie does not show things correctly and confuses foreigners.
I hope the USA never would celebrate the day of the dead. We already have one too many demonic celebration called Halloween. The word of the LIVING GOD says: For God so loves the world that he gave his only begotten son. That who so ever believes on on should not perish (death) but have everlasting life.(eternal) This is just one of many scriptures that speak of Life. Jesus arose from the dead. But, he did not look like and dead rotten body. He looked more real life than ever because he was in an incorruptible body! But those who reject him. Will always have their corruptible body. And the 2nd death is the eternal lake of fire!. You know, the Lord gives his children a preview of what we are going to be like. And satan always copycats the Lord. So satan is giving his a preview of what his is going to be like. Except, he has put his twist on the DOTD to make it sound very wise. And is laughing. My savior is the "The truth the life and the way. Our Easter celebrates Eternal Life.

If you refer to the initial and ending song, it’s called “El Feo” (“The ugly”), a traditional song (or “son”) from the Istmo de Tehuantepec region, on the mexican state of Oaxaca, Mexico. A place where you can find three different ethnic groups: Zapotecos, Huaves and Chontales de Oaxaca. Actually, this song it’s originally sing in Zapoteco language, check out this video where you can hear it complete and with its singing: czcams.com/video/lxDKIJSyiaw/video.html It’s a short demonstration for the Guelaguetza festival, of some traditions, songs, clothes and dances of Zapotecos that live at the Istmo region. At 1:03, Dr. Laura Osorio Sunnucks states, "The Day of the Dead is a festival and in that sense it is very much a celebration and I suppose that is something that appeals to European and North American people because that's not the way we view death." Mexico is in North America... so are other Latin American countries. Is she deliberately trying to separate Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands from the rest of North America? For what purpose?
Geological accuracy,that's why.
Liza Thomas I think she meant Anglo American people, as opposed to Latin Americans. I used to live on the US/Mexico border, and that’s how the Mexican people referred to the white non-Mexicans: “Anglos”.
It's been the Night of the Dead for centuries. And it's been so, because it is at night when the dead come to join the living in the cemetery where their bodies lay. That's why all cemeteries are lit and filled at night...
I think she talks about the geopolitical construction of the US-Canada relation & their history as once part of the GB empire. It may be annoying, but that's the easiest way to put in a short video. Día de muertos it's not about physical geography, but a social construction.

hi! im not from mexico, could anyone please explain the meaning/significance of the day of the dead for the mexican families? :)
Ti is a special date to recall our beloved who pass away.
Day of the dead is a connection between you and the dead not in a sad or dangerous way but in a spiritual way. This reminds you that The dead is present in life, the dead is a bidge between this world and maybe the people that you loved one day in the past. This day has à profound spiritual meaning in the sense of gratitude of life and the gratitude of dead.

Hi
love from China
the day of the dead was created in Mexico in a way to "mock the death" that we don´t really care about it. because it is normal, it's the cycle of life, birth and death. and the true meaning of it it's not really celebrated the death, but actually the life... to celebrate that we are still alive. and keep the memories of our late ones alive in our hearts.
You are totally wrong, otaku girl. I suggested that before commenting on such fallacies you do some research on the subject.
