Great video! Do you mind sharing the process of buying tickets for the hello kitty Shinkansen as a foreigner? Did you book them online in advance or buy in person at the ticket office the day of? If you have any links I would greatly appreciate it :)
You can book up to 30 days in advance. It's a Kodama train, so if you have a JR pass, you can ride for free. There are a few unreserved cars available.
However, since the Kodama is a slower train, I wouldn't recommend taking it all the way to Fukuoka again. It's better to use it for a few stops, then switch to a faster Nozomi train. If you're just heading to Hiroshima, though, it's fine to take it directly there.
Bookings can be made at a JR ticket office or via the SmartEX smartphone app.
When we booked, the website incorrectly listed it as Kodama 847 (Shin-Osaka to Hakata). Unable to find this train number in the app, we visited the station, showed them a picture of the train and our desired travel date, and they took care of everything. It's quite straightforward if you're near the JR office at Osaka Station, though there was a 30-minute wait.
The website has been updated to the correct trains:
- Kodama 849 (Shin-Osaka to Hakata) (Southbound)
- Kodama 838 (Hakata to Shin-Osaka) (Northbound)

Wow, I'm jealous. Hello Kitty Shinkansen 🚄 is not only machine wash, but also JR staff wash cars carefully by hand washing. Yes, we knew they rotated. We've just never seen any other passengers do it, so we didn't know if it was okay.

8:00 my kids spend their time in their phones but, like you, I enjoy watching the scenery go by. It’s soothing.
17:37 no WiFi. My heart goes out to you. I’m the dad also who leads the family from one place to another and losing all Wi-Fi even with 3 backups is painful. I feel for yah. It was actually nice the last time we visited Japan ( in may) as my eldest two are young adults and my younger two are older teenagers so there was less burden on me finding everything (though I still planned everything).
