  • After hundreds of kilometers of use, it's time to review 5.11 XPRT 3.0 and A/T tactical boots. These boots are both black, but that's about the only thing they have in common, so it was interesting to compare them. XPRT 3.0 is waterproof, no-nonsense military boot, whereas A/T is more like a modern version of the classic Vietnam war era jungle boot with some hidden capabilities. If you have any further questions about these boots, don't hesitate to ask. Here are links to 5.11 Tactical and their descriptions of these boots:

    Taival Outdoors is a channel about the great outdoors, spending time in nature doing everything from day hikes and overnight adventures to bikepacking and multi-day wilderness backpacking. Trekking is close to my heart, but I’m not tied to any particular "genre" like ultralight or bushcraft - instead I do what I've found through my experience in the wild to work the best for me. I'm also making gear reviews and skill videos based on what I actually use and how I operate in nature. Thanks for watching!

    Nice video! Have you tried the Atlas boots in hot weather conditions? I'm looking for a boot for rucking in hot and dry climates and that 5.11 seems a really good choice!

    • @TaivalOutdoors
      @TaivalOutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

      Well yeah as hot as it gets in Finland. They are not made of leather and have vents on the sides, so I believe they are a rather good choice for hot climates.

    Thanks for the video. l'm looking for alternatives to my trail running shoes (they last too little and are expensive!). Just to say, 10:58 l believe those are 'drainage vents' meant to drain the water you may get in the boots... BTW, l was hiking in Finland around a month ago and l loved it. Everyone was super nice to me 👍

    • @TaivalOutdoors
      @TaivalOutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

      You are correct, at least the original purpose of those vents in the Vietnam era jungle boots was to get rid of the water, fast. But of course as an additional bonus they do increase the ventilation inside of the boot as well.

    The A/T 8 tactical boots are good, I want them for hiking?

  • @MmwMmw-fl3tz
    @MmwMmw-fl3tz Před 2 měsíci

    Hi, A/T 8 are in 2 versions, waterproof and non waterproof. You have non waterproof version because your boots have 'drainage vents'. I bought this boots and check it. Left boot was broken because water enter inside. Right boot was good. It resistance many water and was dry inside. So i must return boots but i hope i will get new and i would try it on trip.

  • @overweighthikerwannabe901

    I've heard that if water gets inside them (like if you have to fjord a river) waterproof footwear takes forever to dry out. Also, what about perspiration from the feet? I'm pondering this from the multiday hike perspective.

    • @TaivalOutdoors
      @TaivalOutdoors  Před 2 lety +4

      That's true. I do my water crossings without boots on. However, I find it a bit moronic how some people hate on waterproof boots because those dry so slowly, and instead they walk with boots that are going to get wet. Personally, I'd much rather keep my feet dry as long as possible, so I don't have to deal with drying my boots at any time of the hike. Perspiration can be dealt with changing socks regularly. It's also important to have good socks anyway, regardless if your footwear is waterproof or not.

    Hello, I work in the Mexican customs, I have used the a/t 8" for 18 months, they are very comfortable. I have a question, for urban environments what would you choose: a/t8" or Union 6"? Greetings from Mexico

    • @TaivalOutdoors
      @TaivalOutdoors  Před rokem

      I guess the biggest difference is that Union come with waterproof membrane. But if waterproofness isn't a factor, I'd stick with A/T. I believe they have better outsole.

    As someone who has foot injury would you say the atlas plate reduces the amount stretching of big toe when carrying hevay loads?

    • @TaivalOutdoors
      @TaivalOutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

      I guess that depends on the foot injury, but generally speaking yes, as the ATLAS plate makes the boot quite a bit stiffer.

    So these vents will cause the shoe to get instantly wet as soon as I hit a puddle or have wet muddy conditions, or is it designed so water can exit but not get in?

    • @TaivalOutdoors
      @TaivalOutdoors  Před rokem +2

      You are correct. Water will seep in, but it will also come out as with every step you take your feet act like a pump. I believe the original thinking with US military jungle boots was that your feet/boots will get wet no matter what, so better to have a vent at the side so at least you don't have to take your boots off and turn them upside down to get rid of the water. And of course in dry conditions they do increase the airflow inside the boot as well.

    I am wondering how well the sole of the A/T 8" hold up to 50+ mile back country backpacking in rocky dry terrian.
    Boots now days seem to only last 1 to 2 years where they used to last decades. Its hard to find good soles and construction in shoes and boots these days.

    • @TaivalOutdoors
      @TaivalOutdoors  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I've worn out my Meindl boots' outsoles in a few years - and those are 300+ € boots - so honestly I'm not even expecting these days any shoe or boot to last long if you're doing some real mileage. Only option seems to be to buy boots that you can get replacement soles to.
