    I'll buy them all day used then convert to MIG using generic parts (the kit is a ripoff, plumbing, solenoid style gas valves and wire are not exotic) because it's so handy to have small portable MIG machines. Many owners sell baby FCAW welders after they see how narrow their use case really is but a baby MIG is great to have for auto body work and anywhere you'd otherwise use a suitcase feeder for light stock because a big MIG is heavy, awkward and requires 240V and an extension cord that weighs as much or more than the little Lincoln.
    I've got industrial welders aplenty for heavy work but I can't grab my ESAB 450 with one hand and toss it in my truck. The classic combo of stick for thick and MIG for thin is so popular because it's versatile, cheap and efficient.
    BTW best to buy gas cylinders used since they're filled by exchange. The Weldingweb forum is a good info source on owner vs. lease size cylinders, what neck rings including blanks mean and more. Learn that and you can be wallowing in cylinders for cheap and never run out of gas.

  • @rev.randall2292
    @rev.randall2292 Před 2 lety +4

    I would agree that its limiting. Im usualy using scrap pieces , mower decks , weld on small trailers and have a heck of a time making anything look half decent , but it will stick. Thin stuff is hard not to blow through , and its hard to get hot enough for good penetration. However , its handy as heck , easy to carry on the spot with a generator. Most of my previous welding was alluminum production , and shop repairs with nice gas wire welders so its not going to be the same. The little shield it comes with works fine for body panels on cars , patches , anytime you are mocking up and tack welding so keep it. I wouldnt shy away from it knowing what you expect from it , but a one up would be nice and is on the list.

    I looked at this machine a while back and then spent a little more and got the 140 Weldpak because it had more adjustability and could actually MIG. I'm glad I did because I find myself using the MIG more now than the flux core. Flux core has it's place but it makes a mess and smokes like hell. Once you MIG it's tough to go back to flux core.

    Many body shops use that class of welder because they're cheap and small enough to carry inside a truck cab etc. However there is so much competition on the hobby welder level that you should be able to find a better or equal machine for less money. I have an old copper transformer Weld Pak 100 that has a very nice arc. I don't have any issues with buying used decent quality welders because especially with wire welders any problems tend to be operator error (kinked gun cable, never replacing liner etc) and easily fixed.
    However I have many other welders so I don't have to use the thing as my main machine. Buy the best machine you can manage because you won't regret it. The classic combo of a 240V transformer stick machine (used is fine) and 120v wire welder works for most hobbyists and doesn't break the bank leaving room for tools and a small oxy-acetylene/propane outfit.
    The Weldingweb forum is easily the best welding forum with the Miller forums second and is well worth reading since it has so many experienced members.

    Got mine for free it’s definitely basic but good for home stuff and a gas setup and bottle isn’t too expensive to make switch it to mig but flux core setup can still do 20 gauge steel if you clean your tacks and spread the heat around (I know this isn’t “welding” but you blow through even with massive stick out so only way to do it) only thing I wish was changed was more heat options and maybe a second drive wheel, all in all for how cheap they are second hand wouldn’t not pick one up if you need something cheap and don’t want a amazon welder

  • @bobbofly
    @bobbofly Před 4 lety +2

    Used mine to repair a rusted panel on my 91 Geo Storm. not a SUPER cakewalk, but a good, serviceable stitch weld was relatively easy to accomplish on the lowest settings. Blow-through can be an issue if you're not real, real careful, though. I had substantial history with my particular machine before I started that repair, so I was well acclimated to its little quirks with thin metal & whatnot...

      I agree it is a great machine, I just think it’s to limiting, if your someone doing things like building fences and gates and that kind of thing and that’s all you do then it’s great, this machine welds 1/8 mild steel like a dream, but beyond that it doesn’t have the juice to make a good stick and get the needed penetration, I’m not a pro either.

To convert it to gas with out a tanlk is about $200l Might get a Hobart Handler 140 thats setup for gas for $500 and can weld 3/16" that uses Miller branded parts. If going to invest I rather have one that last and can get parts for. Think i'll save up little more. Those Northern Tools Kutlch ones they don't even sell liners or guns for ( I asked support) Harbor Frieght only sells a liner ( no guns) for thier highesr end model. So those aren't long term investments.

    Hey bud, if it's anything like mine (Weld Pak 100hd NASCAR Edition) It's already set up to hook gas up to it. You can easily go online and find the kit for it and everything is just plugged up internally on this model but you should see a plastic plug where the gas would feed in and you don't even need a new lead, you can use the one that comes with it with gas! I'm no professional but trust me when I say that you will like the welder a lot more after $150 kit(i paid less but that was years back...?)

    • @beasleyreese2759
      @beasleyreese2759 Před 4 lety +1

      That's why the wheels that feed the wire are reversible and you obviously have to use appropriate wire for everything to work correctly but you already have the welder so even if you pay the $150 it's still better than another $600, you know.

    Juat saying that Lincoln said it will weld a whatever inch/gauge steel says nothing regarding why you feel that this isn't a welder you should buy. Your criterion for what the difference is between welders was incredibly cloudy. Your only reason not to go with this welder (no longer available) said NOTHING about any relatable reasons why welder "B" would be better... nothing about amp setting choices, polarity, wire speed/feed mechanism issues. "Limiting" as a criticism should come supplied with reasons, not vague stated thickness references. I came away with zero education about something I've wondered for years. My brother-in law does amazing welds with his old Weld-pak on plate up to 1/2", granted that they may not be the deepest of welds, I have always considered buying that welder. Moot point considered! Of course, as with most things, you buy the most you can get for the buck and if possible, scrape up that few $ you can to scale (no pun intended) up!! If you need/want a good welder with smooth arc, variable volt/amps, good penetration, and decent duty cycle ratings, the data I'd hoped to find here, you need MUCH more than a 110V hobby welder! You do get what you pay for, as long as you have the score! I don't know any more now than I did before I saw this vid!

    • @Bufordboone

      Your clearly not the target audience for this video, people who understand polarity, wire speed, and amp settings aren’t looking at this machine, this video was literally done with the lamest terms possible for a reason, this is an absolute beginner machine, the target audience for this video will take thins machine off the shelf as a “it’s the cheapest one here” take it home and never use it as intended, they will set it exactly how the chart says to and not change anything unless material thickness changes, so no, I didn’t talk very professionally about this machine, your clearly have as much if not more knowledge about welding processes than I do…

    I have no problems with this welder, welded many projects, fixed things, seems this excuse of the welder is no excuse of the welder, it is the operator using the welder. Your not putting together a high ride building with it, it is made for a home owner with small projects, if you need to weld like putting together beams for a high rise, then you should have purchased a better or a number higher than this one. being on a budget is no reason to mock a welder you purchased, then purchase a different brand on your budget and see how good or better than this model. No problems with this one,, hint, if you have bigger steel and bigger projects, go buy some gas for your project, works better than flux core, but I have welded with flux core with this one, no issues at all, get use to the settings and you won't be crying about buying it. It is the operator not the welder??????

      Bruh! I did not bash the welder a single flippin time! I know exactly what the welder was intended for, and LIKE I SAID In the video it is great at that, I said it’s a great machine and does exactly what it is advertised to do, it is a budget flux core welder, I understand that and SAID THAT, I bought a bigger better gas capable welder because this one doesn’t fulfill MY NEEDS, the point of this video is to show exactly what the welder can do and maybe help some people who are on the fence, which it has, to purchase the right welder for their specific needs!
