    We've heard a lot about the Mig-29 in the news lately with the whole Ukraine Russia thing but in this video we want to look and see exactly how relevant the Mig-29 is and if given all of its shortcomings, if it can still be competitive if you play your cards right.

    On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
    If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

    I feel like the mig-29 has the unfortunate distinction of having old airframes fielded against newer, upgraded fighters. Radar, missiles and avionics (not to mention engines) from the 80s isn't a fault of the design.

    The Mig-29 airframe is fantastic, the Soviets have shown frequently that they have a deep understanding of aerodynamics and have produced some impressive aircraft (prototype or series).
    Its the systems that let it down, even more so with less trained crew, that will struggle with getting any situational awareness at all.

      Not speaking about the capability of the airframe, but the quality of build, back in the '80s I got up close and personal with a Mig 29 at the Abbotsford Airshow. No one was standing anywhere near an un barriered Mig 29 on the ramp (day before the show). I got close enough to stick my head up in the wheel well. I was an aircraft metalworker at the time and looked at the metal work and rivets with a metal workers eye. It was a mess of ill fitting sheet metal, under driven, overdriven, and dumped rivets.

    I flew mig-29 in competition last year, and found it to be fine against the 16s and 18s
    Understanding how complex the grey zone in performance works will yield some surprising results. The fulcrum is much closer to the viper/hornet than people give it credit for.. DCS pilots really suck at moderating themselves which isn't an issue in the hornet/viper since the aircraft will prevent you from over-overpulling (as an example)

    What you said about the f16 radar is interesting. I have a friend who is a maintenance
    Chief for an F15 squad. He told that his guys always beat the f16s in drills because they can lock them up before the f16s can even see them on radar, because of the relative size difference in the radar array.

      AFAIK, regardless of scanning and tracking method and technollogy used, radar dish diameter still plays a massive role in a radar's detection range, unsurpissingly the bigger F-15 has a radar with a bigger diameter, and therefore, range.

    Also with the design on the Mig-29 it's short range and reliance on GCI and it's not so great avionics package Radar especially, did hamstring it. Not helped by the Soviet/Russian doctrine of rigid control of all fighters along with the inexperience of some pilots as well. We look in DCS as flying it more to Western norms which does make it a potent Point Defence fighter and a very good replacement to the Mig-21. Also when the Mig came out the F-16 was still only Sidewinders and gun... though I would like to see a Blk 10 or 15 EFM F-16 to have a real hotrod as these apparently where the lightest and best thrust to weight versions... Also again another excellent video and walk through.

    So his chafts and flates are ineffective of against R77?
    How do you avoid the missle like the AAMRAM by just diving?

    • @Mike_Romeo
      @Mike_Romeo Před 2 lety +1

      Flares only work against heat seeking missile and chaff only really against older missiles. By diving down, you get into thicker air which will increase the drag for the missile and so it cant fly further than up in higher air.
