CAN To Classic Clocks - Rev Counter Fix

  • The tacho on our R32 swapped Golf Mk2 has never worked, as the 3.2 VR6 in our car sends out a modern CAN signal, which the analogue clocks don't recognise.
    Will our new CAN converter box fix our rev counter and be the template for all classic, analogue tachos?

    It's quite a long way to Ben's house, isn't it? :) Very nice mod indeed... would have been much further up my priority list, but glad you got it working! (And we need more of Jo's cackling)

    I'm going through converting my 20vG60 from Digi to Mk4 loom & ECU. This is a god send!

      Great news. If it so much as helps one person, then that's all that matters! Please keep us updated on the progress. Sounds like a really interesting project! Can't say I've heard of a 20vG60 before!

      MK4 era ECU for a 4 cylinder should have a 0-5V tacho output. To use this to Mk1/2 clocks also for 4 cylinders, you can use a cheaper converter. Look for Mk2 1.8t tacho converter, should be MUCH cheaper than a CAN kit. Around £45 in UK money.

    Just remember to watch the Speedo not rev counter on the way home haha
    I need to sort rev counter on 20v

      Haha yeah it was hard not to look at the newly working tacho all the way! As for the 20vt rev counter, as Ben said there is a 0-5V signal that you can tap into and as it's 4 cylinders going into a 4 cylinder clocks, the fix is cheaper and there are a number of adapter boxes available.

    Put a diesel alternator on mij mark 1 and took the revsignal from the alternator

      I thought that was one of the options to get it to work. Which diesel did you take it from? And was any fabrication required?

      There are firmware updates which may be available so can try that out and see if it stop the pulse. Otherwise I'm guessing it's just the CAN signal from the engine that is showing on the tacho. The main thing is it doesn't show when the engine is running.

      @@golfmk2 Ask them if it's terminated with a 120 ohm resistor. CanBus often bounces back if it's not terminated at the last node

      That's interesting. I didn't know that may cause that, although, as you can probably tell, I'm not clued up on the electronics of this! First step, obviously was just to get it working. Fine tuning is next.

    Amazing! How about the speedometer cable? How do you make it work with your R32 engine and transmission?

      Hi, the speedometer is a cable from a 1.3 carb model and is a direct fit to the 02a gearbox and back of the clocks. Have you been having trouble with this?

      @@golfmk2 Thank you for the information. I have a 2.8 24v that I want to swap to my Mk2 Golf including the AWD system. I hope that the propeller shaft is just a bolt on straight swap.

      The speedo cable will depend on what gearbox you're going to use. If you're running a DSG box then there is a CAN adapter from the company that can work with that too. As for the propshaft, are you running a raised transmission tunnel, like a Syncro?

      @@golfmk2 the 2.8 24v engine comes with a manual transmission...as for the tunnel, I will use the Mk4 Bora tunnel and modify it to fit what is required for the propeller shaft and exhaust system. I really want this 4Motion. I am not sure about the length of the propeller shaft. I just hope that it's a straight bolt on swap from Mk4 to Mk2. Do you have any information about it?

      Excellent. So you're using the gearbox that came with the engine in the Mk4. Makes sense. As for the propshaft, I'm afraid I don't have the knowledge on this. Sounds like a great project though!
