The Lionel 2035 Steam Locomotive on Gumby!

- One thing I always enjoyed about the old "Gumby" cartoons were all the neat vintage toys featured, including model trains. One prominent model they often featured from 1959 to 1968 was Lionel's post-war O-scale 2-6-4 steam locomotive and tender, no. 2035. They'd animate it on Kusan's 2-rail O-scale track, as it looked a lot more realistic than Lionel's 3-rail track of the time (and of course, the Lionel 2035 can only operate on 3-rail O-scale track). This particular model also came equipped with a working headlight and smokestack, "Magne-traction" wheels, and an electrically-operated air whistle in the tender! But of course, they'd typically use cotton for the animated smoke and steam, and often dub in real steam train sound effects (it especially sounds realistic in "Train Trouble!")

Yep, Gumby was dangerously out-of-character in that one! Art Clokey even later disowned that episode ("Point of Honor"), especially since he didn't actually write most of the late 1960s "Gumby" episodes, thus leading to out-of-character bits like that.
@@ZakWolf I think it's kinda badass. I can imagine a bully asking for a fight after school, he shows up with five of his friends, and then suddenly they hear the ground shaking, and then I show up riding on top of a steam locomotive They then say something like "that's not fair" and I'll reply with "you didn't say what type of fight" and then steam is relased everywhere, the whistle sounds, and they all scatter and run away. That would be epic. Wouldn't try to actually hit them though.
Considering the height of the Lionel 2025 engine gives me a decent idea of how tall Gumby is.

HOWDY DOODY, AND BUFFALO BOB SMITH, had Gumby in the 1950s TV show in black and white, and Gumby was filmed in color for future broadcasts on other stations. Now we had VHS tapes, and DVD, and now digital, soon new 3D-c.g.i, COOOOOL!!!!! HI IN MAY 2023A.D.!!

Funny thing, Gumby lives in a toy store (also known as Toyland) and he's going to a smaller toy store in the bigger toy store where he lives to finds his runaway toy train he won from a contest. Indeed, the older "Gumby" episodes had some pretty funky sound effects.
First clip of Toy store is very early Gumby prototype with Red Dot Eyes that extend out. But magnet scene Gumby has black irises that are flat in his eyes 👀.
Because the first episode here is from 1959. The rest are from the 1960s.

Gumby rides on top of engine 2035, yet I wonder if Mr. CLOKEY had known the LOS ANGELES LIVE STEAMERS and Miniature Railroad in Griffith Park. And also Mr. WALT DISNEY had his backyard live steamer 4-4-0 American in 1956, and I saw his photo in the old POPULAR MECHANICS MAGAZINE from my dad.

Nope; that's not mine. I took the photo at a model train show, and it's probably not the same one used on "Gumby". But since it was a mass-produced locomotive, I am still looking to buy one, as I do have some O-scale Lionel trains, in addition to my HO-scale layout.

That's probably why they only did it in "Train Trouble," as an early attempt at making an O-scale model train appear to be sentient. Being from 1959, the animation is also a bit rougher than the rest of the shorts here from the 1960s.

@@WesternOhioInterurbanHistory, at least with that one they used clay for the magic train focusing his smoke box towards Pokey and Prickle, and so it looked less awkward than it did with the Lionel 2035 here. It was also neat how they used that battery-operated Bump-n-Go "Classic" Train painted black for the close-ups and a kitbashed TYCO 2-6-2 steam locomotive for long and medium-shots.

Yep, the Lionel 2035 is definitely fashioned after one, complete with PRR keystone number plate on the front of the smokebox. But the tender car actually reads "LIONEL LINES" (though here they covered it up for licensing or copyright reasons).

Yes, it's based on a Pennsylvania Railroad K4-type steam locomotive, but the tender doesn't say "PENNSYLVANIA." Originally it read "LIONEL LINES", but the artists at Clokey Productions covered it up (most likely for licensing/copyright reasons), and on that side of the tender they put some kind of vague lettering on it, while on the other side they put a fictional railroad insignia over where "LIONEL LINES" was. (On DVD at the shot at 1:03, you can barely make out the "LIONEL LINES" lettering on the tender.)
