Well can't blame him for being cynical his Father used to beat him but maybe told him he "loved" him too so the term takes on a negative connotation when definitions like abuse and love are interchangable. You need to have more trust to have more love and some people just can't do that either never could or just can't anymore after a certain amount of trauma. He "loved" being alone more than being with people "isolation is the gift everything else is just a test of your endurance".
