Tonight I review Russell’s Reserve 13 Year 2023 release batch 5 and compare it to batch 1 and Batch 3. Will this be a contender for bourbon of the year?

I was able to pick up RR 13 in early July for $159. I thought it was batch 4, but the laser etching shows LL / LE, which is batch 5. Have not cracked it open. Waiting to share with my brother and cousin. 🥃

I get mine from my local Air Force base for $69. got two batch 5 bottles today both for $69 each on base.

Just got my batch 5 and never had a 13. I won a raffle last year and chose a Coy Hill over it, now I got both.

I just got a Total Wine store pick Russell's and I totally agree with you, it's missing the dark notes that I love. It's still very tasty and sweet (reminds me of a amped up 1910 or WF Double Oaked). I think my regular Single Barrel has more dark notes.
I was lucky enough to get a RR 13 batch 5 and am going to crack it this weekend. Some people say it's the same as batch 4, some say it's different.
Haha yeah hopefully you got it for a good price but it should be a crime what I’ve seen them charge for RR picks. I haven’t tried 4 or 2 but most people seem to rank it as batch 1 then 5,2,4 all second and then batch 3. It’s probably splitting hairs but I liked it more than 3 and almost as good as 1
@bourbonbill $72. I have a local liquor store that does amazing picks, I probably won't get another one until they do one. Enjoying the RR13 batch 5 right now. Such an epic blast of flavor. Don't recall the other batches well enough to rank.
I have batch 1 and 3 along w 2 diff store picks single/private barrel picks from separate stores(about 60ish$ ea)..and two rickhouse camp Nelson f...wonder how they all compare. Will find out soon i hope!!

This batch is supposedly 13, 15 and 21 year blend … both Camp Nelson and Tyrone barrels

Absolutely it is. No chance it doesn’t make my top 10 and I’ll even say top 3 this year
For me, it was WAY better than the 2nd release. But given the price and availability, I suspect this’ll be my last one. I love Rare Breed, and have a Wild Turkey 12 year coming, so I’ll finish my RR13 May 2023 release and be content. Great review!
Yeah its my favorite WT product but they do keep hiking the price every year which sucks. You will love the WT12 I enjoyed my sample of that need to find a bottle myself.
Seen it in Destin Florida for 199, would that be to much? They had 5 bottles. Sitting there thought maybe price might too much.
No immediate buy at that price. Msrp is 150 now in 2023 and secondary is about 300

It’s been harder and harder to get them the last two years I got them at my local store the first year on my own the 2nd year a buddy grabbed one for me. This year they haven’t even released yet in my state had to trade for this one each yeah gets harder and harder
I’ve only got batch 3 and it’s delicious. Hopefully I can run across batch 5
It’s like saying which of your children do you like more haha but batch 5 is a hitter. Haven’t tried batch 4 but it seems that both carry a more balanced fruit and oak palate then 3 which leaned more into the oak but again all amazing
Great review as always BB! I have batches 2 and 3. Batch 2 is my favorite out of the those two. I have not been able to acquire either batch this year. I did have a chance to buy the new Master’s Keep Voyage for $300 😱! I took a hard pass. I was soooo bummed, but they’ve priced me out. I paid $200 for last year’s and that was pushing it. As much of a WT fan I am, that release should not have the MSRP of Pappy 23. That’s just ridiculous. As far as R13, batch 1 was underpriced, but $150 is too much. $120 would be a fair price. I’ve read and heard arguments against raising prices this high. If the bottom falls out, Campari will regret it. It could severely devalue the WT brand long term. Thanks!
Yeah the value prop on WTMK is crazy I mean 10yr bourbon finished weeks yes weeks in a rum barrel is no where near 300 msrp lol. I agree the 150 value on RR13 is more than double their starting msrp but I simply look at it as their is much older juice in the blend and this think almost always takes my bourbon of the year spot so if my winner costs 150 in todays world I can’t complain but yeah any more price hikes and i might be out
@@bourbonbill I bought a 9+ year RRSB instead and it is phenomenal. I have a 12 year Appleton. I’m going to add one drop in of it in my RR and it will be the same damn thing for $70! 😂

Bourbon Bill big fan. As a fellow Pennsylvanian I was wondering what your feelings on FWGS is in todays bourbon climate. Couldn’t get my hands on Russell’s 13 last year because FWGS employees ran the whole allotment out the back door!!
Good question Garrett. I’ve always felt it’s a mixed bag but more recently I’ve turned decidedly negative. First of all yes last year the geniuses at fwgs didn’t make RR13 allocated so employees bought most of the 6 bottles in their single case before open a real sham when it’s govt run. Secondly this year has been horrible Pa used to be on time to slightly behind for releases but now we are almost 6 months behind on releases and the new website is worse than the old. Pa has also started charging more than msrp now on allocated bourbon which should be illegal.

I saw my first 13 last week and they wanted $400. Had to walk away from it. Enjoyed the review.

Only found batches 3 and 4 in the Dallas metro so far. Curious if 5 will drop in the fall here.
I think places either got 4 or 5 this year but haven’t heard if places got both 4 and 5
The Batch 3 bottles mixed in is rubbing some people the wrong way with the price increase. I know logistics are tough to manage but $140 retail for a bottle that was $100 is a bit disappointing.

First year in store drop in PA. Second year buddy grabbed one at in store drop and gave it to me. This year had to trade for it

Russell 13 is one of my unicorns! But unfortunately haven’t seen it under $300 in my area.
It’s so good one of those bottles that for me lives up to it’s hype. I hope you can find one at a decent price this year. These haven’t dropped in pa yet

Just picked this up! I had to overpay for it but it was the best price I had seen and it is one of three bottles I told myself I was willing to overpay for (JD 12 and Mitchers 10 being the others).
