  • Hello everyone and welcome to the forge, in this week's video I forge a hunting knife from 5160 spring steel and finish it off with some laminate handle material and a razor-sharp edge. I appreciate you watching! #knifemaking #forged #blacksmithing #maker #howto #tutorial #education

    Good to see so much finessing during the forging rather than mainly relying on stock removal. 👏

      I appreciate you watching! I occasionally do some stock removal builds as well, but forging is my favorite way to work.

    Man, this is elegant in its simplicity. I have tried the exact same thing…same material, too, but that dang steel hardened up on me like diamond, and I can’t get it annealed to save my life. I did exactly the same annealing process too. So I guess it’s gonna have a paracord wrap for handle scales.

    Awesome work you make it look easy... I'm struggling with grinding in the bevels correctly any tips or tricks

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Thanks! The best bet starting out would be use a grinding jig if possible, that's what I did when I first started, it will help keep everything straight. I appreciate you watching.

    What do you charge for a knife that size? Or actually a little shorter even an edc ffg. Thanks

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  Před rokem +1

      A knife like this or a little shorter costs 100 for monosteel and 250 for Damascus, the price includes a leather sheath. I appreciate you watching!

    Very beautiful knife, exelent work! I’m quite new to metalwork in generall, and I saw that you quenched another way than most others I have seen. Does this have any effect on the bladde? Thanks for sharing!

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks! I appreciate you watching! Edge quenching is used a lot more than people realize, ABS mastersmith J. Neilson does all of his regular steel knives that way, it allows the edge to harden and keep a sharp edge while keeping the spine soft which allows for better durability, especially in chopping.

    Beautiful knife! Would love a template for that one. You put it in a box of what looked like sand and laid bricks on top, after heating it. What was that and purpose of it? Great videos. Thank you.

    • @Mysticmountainforge
      @Mysticmountainforge  Před 9 měsíci +2

      That was hardwood ash, it allows the steel to cool down extremely slow which make sit easier to drill, you can do the same process with a clay based cat litter. I am hoping to eventually get to where i can offer template downloads in the future. I appreciate you watching!
