My dad kept every letter his family sent. He passed away in 2010. Those letters are now in my possession in big ol' zip locks. I have a deep respect for our Military, especially the Marine Corps. I remember when this song came out, my dad gave me a look that said, "When I'm gone, take care of those letters."
One more week, and I might be able to have my bourbon again...

I wrote my son every week or several times a week during BC and then after he was deployed I sent boxes. I get to see him next week!!! He is a Sgt. in the Marines and is about to be going back out. He is MSG, and he got chosen for "Special Duty" and had to come back to the States for that training so he us coming home for a couple days. He bought a ring and is going to ask his gf to marry him. I always watch yall. Please pray for him. He is about to be going to some not so nice places. And this momma's heart is breaking.

My wife is a teacher. When I deployed to Afghanistan back in '09, she had her class write letters to me and the guys in my platoon. One of my guys got a letter from a kid that said "don't die" as one of the three sentences he wrote. We all laughed pretty hard about that one. I just said "good advice kid".
This came out a year before my husband left for Iraq. We had tremendous access while he was over there. Skype calls, email. Still, my husband looked for the letters from home. This song really touches the gut.
Yeah, I was in before skype et al. But the letters are something you can carry with you. A lot of times, you can't have a phone or electronic devices even now. - Keith
@@BourbonCountryReacts Yeah, he had internet service in his mini trailer and had complete access to it whenever he wasn't working. He was not out on patrols etc., though. He was restricted to the base area.

I have a pretty sad story about a military letter.
From back from world war second and back than from the enemy.
My grandmas brother was send to fight on the eastern front in Russia (Stalingrad or better hell on earth) for nazi Germany.
He was 19 years old and never made it home. He sent one last letter home and my family never heard from him again. My grandma carried that letter around for 50 years. We don’t know what happened to him, no grave, no body, no sign, just nothing.
That broke my grandmas heart. She kept talking about him all the time, because otherwise no one would even know he existed.
In the last letter he wrote, he wrote that they were starving and freezing to death and that he lost all hope and just wanted to come home. But that he properly would die there because they wouldn’t survive much longer.
So back then letters from the front home and from home to the front were so important.
I’m still thinking about him from time to time.
Sorry, I know it’s practically a story from the enemy but I remember that letter before it totally fell apart.

@@BourbonCountryReacts yes, he was. And when I read the letter you couldn’t really made letters out anymore. But he just wanted to come home, was scared to death, tired, hungry and he wrote that it’s better to get shot dead then to starve or freeze to death. my grandma had one picture of him next to her bed until she passed away in 2017.
Wonderful reaction guys, thank you for sharing so many of your experiences and feelings, Keith. Our school had an 'outreach club' that would gather stuff and send care packages to American military stations over seas, I always donated but had no clue where the boxes went, I hope those boxes lifted the spirits of soldiers.

Reminds me of a 90ish old widow that received a letter from her husband that was addressed to the house she lived in from when he was 18 years old in France during WW2, She said that the letter was like seeing a part of her husband that she had never known, She had married her husband when she was 25 and knew about his time during WW2 but never asked about it. Letters will always bring something out of you no matter what the situation. Even if the letter is typed it is the feeling you get when reading those
Never got a letter from my dad. He was old school and never let his soft side show until he was a lot older.
Always loved this song! I knew especially Keith would enjoy it too because of his military background. I also really enjoyed Keith sharing his own stories and experiences after the song.
2004, (when this song came out) was when mainstream country started going sour for me personally, but this was one of the few new songs on the radio back then that I always really enjoyed every time it came on. In '04, John Michael had not had a big hit in a while, so not only was it nice to have him back on the radio, but I also just loved how it sounded compared to the other new stuff at the time. The traditional country arrangement with dobro and harmonica reminded me a lot of early 90's country from when I was little. This is also one of the best military themed songs that came out in the 2000's, imo.
My father-in-law met my mother-in-law from getting a letter from her through one of those letter writing school programs. 😄
I can remember once in a blue moon actually getting a call from my dad but they were few and far between. We didn't realize until after my parents passed away that they both kept every letter that they wrote each other and that dad wrote us or we wrote him through all of his time in though military. My dad served 24 yrs and he spent almost as much time away from us as he did with us due to his MOS. The loss of him due to cancer from exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam when he was only 44 tore us all apart. Not a day goes by that I don't miss him and I am so proud to call myself an Army Brat!
My son served in 2007 until 2010 13 months in Korea and 2 years in Iraq. I wrote every day. Thanks for your service

This song always makes me thing of Daddy. Every time I deployed he shipped me a box full of goodies every week (to share) and a nice long letter. He'd always have a sweet killer line or two at the end that would make me wanna ball. My job always had access to email but a real letter and a box from home meant the world.
We always posted the letters from Mrs. Smith’s 2nd Grade class up on the squad board.
I remember when this song came out, my sister-in-law bought the CD this song is on because my brother was going overseas. We had to replace the CD twice because this song got played so much it started to skip.
When I started we had regular mail and a rare MARS call. Even in 2002-2005 phone and computer was glitchy at best and it sometimes got dangerous when a soldier went into action with his mind distracted or upset. A trade-off for sure but not always a good one.
Lovely song. Also poignant. I think of this one every time I see mail call in a war movie.
Despite ample war stories and military men on both sides on my family, one thing I never saw was any of the letters from home that were sent to the husbands and sons. I always found that so bizarre. We are talking about people who left so many amazing keepsakes behind. Except letters.
My grandmother passed last year and I thought for sure I’d discover missives and photos and war correspondence with my grandfather in her possessions. What I ended up finding instead was about 10 long-hand, front and back eight page letters from a mother to a son dated between 1914 and 1917. We had absolutely no relation to these people. I have no idea how my grandmother got, or why she kept these very personal letters. There was also a letter written in what I believe is French (the handwriting is quite small, but lovely) that accompanies a picture of a young man in military uniform.
I would like to return these beautiful letters to the family of the son, but I don’t have enough details to find him.
You probably won't want to hear this. But, those letters were likely collected from a fallen comrade, with the intent to hand deliver them. And that delivery probably never happened. - Keith
@@BourbonCountryReacts Thank you for that perspective, Keith. I can’t believe I never thought about that possibility. That makes so much sense. And it’s definitely something my great-grandfather would have been willing and honored to do for another soldier. It’s such a shame the letters never made it back to their intended recipient, though. I wonder why? Maybe one day I’ll find enough information about the son to return them to his descendant(s). A friend suggested I try the military database but I didn’t know enough for that to be helpful. As detailed as these letter are, they unfortunately never mention anything about where the son was stationed, what his rank was, or what branch he was part of. All I know is the son graduated from high school or maybe college in 1914, his mother lived in my city the whole time she was writing, he had an older sister who got married in 1915, and I know his and his mother’s names. Both of which were too common for a search.
During the Gulf War, our high school did like a pen pal thing, I had already had an appreciation for our military from my Grandfather serving and my cousins, but writing letters during that time gave me a whole new understanding.

The sad letter kept me more focused for some reason I had to make sure I got to send a response and I had to almost like it was primary but all letters kept me in high spirits

Your story about the Hogboard reminds me of a story that my grandfather when he was station in Germany during Korea. He wasn't married to my grandmother yet even though they had grew up together and he was a decade older than her as he was 19.
Anyway the way my grandpa told this story is while many of the men in his unit that were not married nor had a girl would always find a way for one of the family members to sneak a type of magazine if you get the idea to them. the issue was that the Sergent was a very deeply religious married man that while he did not push his religion on to anyone he did expect him men to behave and that meant no certain types of pictures. So trying to get a magazine pass him was always a challenge. until one day someone managed to do so by the skin of his teeth. the guys family member hid parts of the picture inside other items that unless you knew what they were looking for would go undected,
Grandpa took one look at the pictures said while the women were pretty they were not his type, He liked his women fat. And grandpa never did snitch on them for the pictures as well. Turns out the guys traded the pictures with the Germans for items that were in short supply like pain meds or what ever was used back then.

Both of my Grandfathers were in WWII.
From one Grandfather, among his photo albums was a collections of letters that he saved.
My other Grandfather's community did something unique. A local paper told the service members and their families to send their letters to them. They compiled the letters into a weekly newsletter, and mail it out to everyone. That way everybody in the community could keep up with everyone else.
As for myself, I entered the army in 2006. I have saved every letter from Basic, AIT, Afghanistan, and my current deployment. Even though I have constant internet access, I still enjoy getting that letter I can hold in my hand.

The only time my stepdad ever told me he was proud of me was when i got from my first tour of Iraq, after my second tour and my first tour or Afghanistan we just pulled away from each other. i think the pride went to fear or shame

I sent a lot of letters to military. Several of the guys wrote back. I had regular letters to guys. I sent care packages to the guys. Several guys didn't have family ot friends writing to them so I was that substitute friend to send letters from home
Yeah, I remember when we were writing and making care packages in school for soldiers. Remember sending lots of female care products like tampons and pads for the lady soldiers. xD

Also the story about how the military man had his mom put laxative in the cookies reminds me of Jim Carrey's character putting liquid laxative in his best friend's drink in the movie Dumb and Dumber and then the visual of his friend being miserable in the bathroom. Bet they never asked for his cookies ever again after that! 🤣
You know I am actually blind have been sight impaired my entire life when I was in second grade I was in a class with other side impaired children and we got to write letters to the soldiers the only difference with our letters is that they were all in Braille our teachers would sit and write and print right next to the Braille letters so the soldiers could read them the gentleman that wrote back to me was actually in the Marines and we actually kept in contact for about a year-and-a-half before his letters stopped coming I always hope that he was okay and nothing bad happened to him and was happy to see that he appreciated it I was also the only one that got letters written back to me maybe the letters the other kids sent out the soldiers thought it was kind of weird LOL and if they wrote back how would we be able to read them I was glad that my Soldier took a chance this was in the early 90s so there wasn't as much technology as there is now for the visually impaired so Keith your thoughtful comment about the children's letters definitely appreciated by me thank you❤❤❤😅

1st can I say ewwwe... I can now see the picture my girlfriends and I made ala 1950s pin up girls ( and had copied) up on a wall in some barracks somewhere. 🤣🤣🤣 stupid me went along with that shite.
I picked up 2 Marine pen pals, one who was checking out the berthing on a gator freighter I was doing some electrical work in. The other when i went overseas to do an inspection , he was my babysitter, which I'm sure thrilled him to no end.
I sent very chatty letters at 1st, then as I got to know a bit more about each of the guys they were more....ummm geared to their interests? I mean no use sending football scores to someone that ain't into the sport.
I continued exchanging letters with one of them until he told me his girlfriend didn't appreciate it.
The other Marine never came home. His buddies sent my letters back to me.
Anyway.. this has been my favorite song by John since the 1st time I heard it.

The ol' chocolate laxative is an old trick...mum worked in a clothing factory at one point, and the boss's son was a mongrel child, he'd knock off the contents of the girls' lolly jars,,, so the ol' girl got even with him. On the Friday afternoon, just before knock off time, she half filled her lolly jar with "special home made" chockies. Come Monday morning the jar was completely empty,,, needless to say, the little "prince" never touched anyone's jar after that...😏
