  • Join Kay Martinez as they explore the game development, character design, original soundtrack, and cultural movements that inspired SEGA's estranged masterpiece: Jet Set Radio Future.
What do funk, hip-hop, rock, and rollerblading have in common? Each of these embody various forms of unbound self-expression within bold, creative communities. They are also key pieces to the intricate make-up of Jet Set Radio Future. Since 2002, JSRF has remained locked away as an exclusive title for the original Xbox; never seeing a remake, remaster, or port to current consoles. Still, decades later, its vibrant themes of self-expression and community continue to inspire people across the globe. Masterpieces: Jet Set Radio Future (2023) features never-before-seen interviews with artists from JSRF's original soundtrack and creators inspired by the game.

From one JSRF fan to another, Thank You for taking the time in not only creating such a well crafted Documentary that feels like it belongs in that Universe... but for also letting so many others share their voice on how much Jet Set Radio Future has impacted them to this day and why this game is still beloved all these years later. Growing up, I didn't know anyone outside my family that has even heard of this series but it didn't stop me from spreading the word about the "Skating Graffiti Game with Awesome Music". Before the internet, I was convinced that no matter how much I spoke out on JSRF... it was forgotten to time even by SEGA themselves. Since then, it's the dedicated fanbase and videos like this that made me realize just how many of us there actually are who share this deep connection to this special game. From the timeless artstyle, unforgettable music, responsive controls, addictive multiplayer, and countless memories that Jet Set Radio Future alone introduced to my life... it's always such a surprise hearing similar experiences to JSRF since its 2002 release. Hopefully one day, our words will be enough to convince SEGA into at least finally porting Jet Set Radio Future to PC already. Until then, I'll continue to support fan projects like this as you did an amazing job incapsulating the feeling behind JET SET RADIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

"Documentary that feels like it belongs in that universe" is one of the highest complements I could ever receive 😌 thank you, sincerely. I adamantly tried to stay true to the overall aesthetic when producing this. And I wanted to make sure the fan community felt heard in this as, even though we are the sole reason this game is still thriving today, SEGA seems to ignore that fact and the international love for it that exists today. Which is truly a shame as this is easily the most talented, creative, passionate, kind-hearted, chillest fan base I've ever been a part of! I'm happy to read it hit home for you in so many ways! Wow man, I loved this documentary. I'm a Brazilian fan of JSRF and despite the fact that there are virtually no Brazilian fans or references to the fanbase of this game, to me it has a unique vibe that no other game has come close to. • @marcusthulio3597
      @marcusthulio3597 Před rokem +5

@@kayisthey Indeed, but I believe this is due to the lack of marketing and the fact that both Dreamcast and original Xbox were extremely rare things here in Brazil. It was more common to have PlayStation 2 as the predominant console in South America in general.
That's why there was no established fanbase for Jet Set Radio overall. In fact, I only got to know Jet Set Radio through 2 Mello's recent music, and consequently, I came to understand where the inspirations for the music came from, and I ended up loving the entire vibe of Jet Set Radio.

Let's just hope that Bomb Rush Cyberfunk can live up to the masterpiece and my all time favorite game JET SET RAAAADDDDIIIOOOO!!!! It's the closest we will get to JSRF. Regardless thank you for this!! Just anything jet set for me, I will watch or play. I need to add
(Edit) Hideki Naganuma is a absolute genius and his music will live on. It's unfortunate he couldn't be interviewed. My guess is that Team Reptile has a part of that.
(Last Edit) Thank you for this documentary!! I had goosebumps, smiles, head bobbin and tears lol. Everything about this about the game to the music and culture that's apart of the game and real life was so well thought and insightful. Watching this made me actually realize why I love and cherish Jet Set Radio and Future for 22 years. I already loved the game from day one and i was 10 years old when it came out so this gives me a complete understanding about the game and the workings behind the scenes. Good sir!! @kayisthey hey! No worries on getting Naganuma on board. I would think it would be hard to get a hold of. Any fan of JSR/JSRF will know Naganuma is the man and his music is influential as hell lol.
If I was more well known or a content creator, I would of absolutely loved to talk about jet set radio and how it impacted my life as a kid to teenager basically to today. Jet set radio is number 1 on my MT. Rushmore of games. I have my original sealed copy of JSRF without the Sega gt 2002 half and my regular copy with Sega gt 2002 that I pop in here and there to get my JSRF fix.

I remember playing this with my old friend Mark Wilson. We used to stay up all night playing this game. I have some of the best childhood memories with him. We played this game damn near every single weekend we had sleepovers from 2002-2005. In 2006 I lost contact with Mark. He went to a different High School and we both just drifted away. I happened to be online looking up someone and his name popped up and I found out he went to prison for beating his parents and breaking his own moms rib cage. Turns out he suffers from Schizophrenia which blew my mind because the Mark that I remember I would have never have dreamed. I hope your doing well out there Mark. Miss you bud. When I lost contact with him in 2006 we were 13 years old. Time Flys.

Really cool to see Richard Jacques, Marty James, and all sorts of fans give their thoughts on the impact of JSRF. I think I saw elsewhere that it took you almost two years to put it all together? This video is more, “JSRF as viewed through a modern western worldview,” than it is divulging into the creation of the game. It gets pedantic especially when discussing musical genres and influences.
With that said, I hope the continuous discussion of JSR amongst fans (like this video) catches the attention of Sega and they revive the series. Even if it’s just a port of JSRF for the current gen of gaming.

This game influenced me on a profound level. I played both games between the ages of 12-14. It really changed my taste in music also. I'm really into underground dance music and into the culture but that wouldn't have happened if JSR didn't plant the seed.
The great street artist Keith Haring would have loved the games since one of his primary forms of his art was street graffiti and felt art should be easily accessible to the masses. Dare I say it's a continuation of Keith Haring's ideals . Unfortunately he was a victim of HIV/AIDS so he passed away 92.

I really don't leave many, if any, comments on youtube. I'm mostly a silent viewer. Though seeing a well made and thorough documentary made about one of the games that made my childhood, I feel the need to speak on this a little, bare with me.
As someone who wore his controller joysticks down playing this game, I adored every minute I spent playing JSRF. I think the documentary you've made is an incredible feat and it deserves every ounce of praise. The extensive research, tracking composers and big content creators to feature throughout the video, well written dialogue, and a clear/level headed perspective on every topic. There was a lot in this video that I learned, especially in the music section that lasted the better part of 2/3 of the video. Which leads to why I decided to write this comment.
I want to be clear, I absolutely loved this doco, but I feel like something crucial was left out. Yes the music was probably the best part about the game, understandable that it got such a massive section. Yes the story, characters, and the world buiding were amazing and needed time to discuss, 100 points there. Absolutely the back story of how it all came together is a tale to be told. Though I feel like one thing that was missed and needed to be talked about. Was what it felt like to be playing this game.
When someone tells you to they like a rollerblading game about fighitng the cops with graffiti, it doesn't sound that appetizing. Though once you're immersed in the crescendo of everything dioscussed in this doco, you feel like a damn HERO. There's probably a character in JSRF that suits your dream inner funk/punk mischief maker. Once you've found them you get your pick of something crazy like soaring over towers in the skyscraper disctrict, to tricking through the humble back alleys of chuo street.
This was so immersive because it almost felt achievable. It almost felt like that could be me on that screen.

Very well done! I saw the commercial for JGR way back in the 4th grade and it was the wildest thing I'd ever seen at that point of my life. So much happened in those 30 seconds that I had to experience it for myself. Went out and bought it a few days later and spent that entire weekend grinding it out only to start over again because I had so much fun. Even got an Xbox just to play JSRF (Halo was a cool 2nd game too I guess...). It introduced me to so much music that I still love to this day. If it weren't for this game, I'd probably not be into house, disco, alternative rock, or indie hip-hop. Side note, but I ran into Charlie 2na of Jurassic 5 at the Playboy Jazzfest and got to have a short conversation with him. If it weren't for that game, I'd probably never have found out about one of my favorite hip-hop groups. I say all of this to ultimately say that this 90 minute movie took me back to a time that really helped me form who and what I wanted to become. Thank you for this project!

This was fantastically produced and the presentation was excellent as well. Sega was always a company in its early days that wasn’t afraid to take chances. Since they were purchased, that sadly changed drastically. The games that came from 1985 to 2005 were superb examples of that. They were at the forefront of technology, from the SuperScaler, to the first use of motion capture and dedicated 3D GPUs in Virtua Fighter, they had games that became synonymous with eras like OutRun and Hang On. Jet Set Radio, and future were both artistic masterpieces that have aged beautifully. Thank you for capturing all of those aspects in your video. Despite the length, for me, it went by quickly. Best wishes and I hope that more people get to see your work!

Excellent work, well done. A fitting tribute to an incredible game and cultural phenomenon! It's a shame Hideki Naganuma didn't want to take part, but it's nice to see his support for this doc on social media ❤

Jet Set Radio Future changed my life in ways I can’t describe. It brought my love for hip hop and music front and center. It gave me the understanding of what afrofuturism in such an early age. I’ll love a port of this game so I am able to bring and introduce my children and my soon to be wife in August. Who I am to my core.

Very nice thank you. Really liked it. Only complaint was throwing modern politics into it which I feel didn't belong. Rest was great.

Yet another amazingly put together piece. I learned so much from this, i especially really like the portions about the music, learning about shibuya kei was really interesting. I also definitely agree with the take aways on the philosophy of JSRF. To this day this game is something that inspires me. Thanks a lot for this amazing content and for this collection of awesome individuals getting together to talk about this masterpiece.
Definitely gonna subscribe. I dont normally comment much, but i felt i had to with how strongly i felt about this content. I look forward to seeing what else is on this channel as well as whats to come in the future

Great video mate! JSRF had such a massive impact on me at such a young age. As a kid who was into art and never really fit in, it sparked my love for graffiti and the whole game felt like I had found a place that I belonged. The tracks and art style to this day influence my work as a full time artist, which is crazy to think about. Aisle 10 was always my favourite track from the game too, such a banger! So good to see a segment on it in this documentary!
