Actually Leclerc's penalty is a bit of Ferrari's fault. They said they used wrong pit limiter sensor that caused them to go 1km/h over the limit. You switch the sensors between each type of tyres
Leclerc posted on Facebook saying it was not just the wrong sensor but the sensor also failed meaning he had no indication what speed he was going in the pit lane, therefore unfortunately causing his first ever time penalty in F1, seriously I don't know how much more pain I can take from ferrari it's really hard to be a Tfosi this year.

@@aidancrawford2084 First ever time penalty?
@@damp2269 I don't know what they were trying to do? If you want to go for the fastest lap you need to prepare your tyres and charge the battery. How was he supposed to do that battling Alonso? Also you don't risk late pitstop like that without a gap to another car, something could go wrong like long pit stop or even loose wheel causing DNF. You are putting driver in a lot of pressure too
I loved Ocon's double overtake. Almost a recreation of Hakkinen and Shumacher in 2000, 22 years ago

Fun fact - this is only the second time since Bottas' debut in 2013 that Bottas and Hamilton DNF'd in the same race. First one was Austria 2018.
Wow only one time how realible mercedes
When Crofty said "Charles sped in the pitlane, where was that speed during the race" 💀
So true about McLaren. Can't believe I remember the days when people were complaining that Ferrari and McLaren were the only teams winning and no one else had a chance. We've come a long way since then.
The only defense I could say for McLaren is that they've regularly struggled with rule changes (and they have outdated resources). Even so, they've definitely dropped the ball on their car this year, while their strategies haven't been good. Ferrari on the other hand built a fast (albeit unreliable) car, but their strategies are as bad as they have been over the past few years. McLaren are still building an updated wind tunnel so there's some hope for them. If they struggle even after it's finished, then I'd be very disappointed. Ferrari's problems however should've been solved years ago, but haven't. Hopefully the fact that they lost both championships due to team blunders hurts them enough to realise they need change.
Mercedes and Red Bull don't look like they'll drop from the front any time soon, and I'm confident that Merc will build a more competitive car next year. Alpine seems poised to slowly move forward, but they need to figure out their driver lineup soon (Ocon is a good driver on his day, but he's been inconsistent and has never been a great team player). McLaren and Ferrari are both capable of getting back to the front, but they need to iron out their issues quickly.
Now it's only red bull and Mercedes
The fact that Charles exceeded pit limit by 1.0 km/h is something :D

Ferrari strategy is less km/h than smh
It was a damaged pit limiter sensor
How did he do that?! He literally presses a button which limits the speed to 50 km/h!

During qualifying coverage I pointed out to my son that in the Ferrari garage there was half a Pirelli tire cover laying on the floor between the tires. Fair play to Ferrari for at least asking Charles this time if he was okay with the hards instead of just putting them on without warning. You won’t see other teams doing that but that’s bc they don’t blunder strategies as often so it shows they’re at least trying to change.

They took a risk that only didn't work out because Leclerc speeded in the pitlane. Not Ferrari's fault.
This is one of those times when it's Leclerc who makes the mistake, not Ferrari. It's hilarious though.

I’m REALLY hoping that Ricciardo can get Alonso’s seat. I think having a rejuvenated Ric and Ocon on one team would be a solid 1,2 KO punch to McLaren.
Ricciardo has lost his confidence. Will Alpine want him?
@@JohnFromAccounting they've got his 2020 as a reference, I don't think the alpine has changed much in terms of design philosophy, he should go okay to start then claw back some form.
Although if it were to happen, they would probably keep an exit clause in the back pocket should he not come back to form.
It's really the only thing that makes sense for him. I don't see him being interested in a "project" i.e. Williams or HAAS. It's really half a step up given the teams relative performance. It actually still doesn't make sense to me that Piastri would rather go to McLaren than Alpine for that reason. Of course there are rumors that the atmosphere in the team is so bad no one wants to drive for them, but I've yet to see or hear much to support this.
Where ever he goes , there is going to be a reckoning. Either he and McLaren were just a bad fit, and he returns to form in a new team. Or he confirms that he truly has lost it.
@@ians5245 Agree with everything you said, just wanted to add that Piastri to Alpine means midfield and occasional podiums is pretty much his ceiling. But at Mclaren, if he can beat or equal Norris before Hamilton retires then he's first choice for the Merc seat. @@JohnFromAccounting he has but then McLaren strategy cost him any chance of points this weekend. No one can be in a Redbull unless it's Max because it's essentially his car. Very happy for Albon. All I wanted was for him to score points. The man deserves it.
Again with the excuses... He is simply a better and faster driver than any of his teammates have been. Gasly, Albon, Perez, they all are perfectly aware Max is on another level. You can hear it when they talk about it/him. Also better than Ricciardo but didn't show as much because Max was almost a rookie then and Ricciardo was in his prime.

somehow i feel what leclerc is missing compared to a verstappen and hamilton is the overall understanding of strategy and this is not only during the race but also affects his input towards the team the days ahaead of the race, which ultimatively leads to the insecurities whithin the ferrari strategy team we saw the last couple of races.
See i think the drivers must be able to communicate very clearly how they feel on each tire, performance whise. and here in spa i think you saw, that leclerc is missing out on that. There was long discussions with him about the tire options, but none with sainz and i think it is because they knew sainz would speak up immediatly if he was not the same oppinion. they were not with leclerc.
I think that's a possiblilty. But it's *pure speculation* without any indication it's true and still doesn't excuse Ferrari underperforming for a team of their caliber. You could have a mute driver and they should perform better from their end.
ocon is definitely a team leader, he performs very well almost every race and just like today he has some really clean overtakes

To be honest, even though im a ferrari fan, i really think that Verstappen could really become at least a 3 time world champion at this level of skill.
Given how young he still is, and the fact he seems to keep getting better, that number could be just about anything. 3 would be a disappointment.
I was at Spa this year, on the end of the straight before Raidillon. Amazingly handsome track and seeing the cars accellerate throughout corner 3/4 pushing up the mountain is an incredible sight and technical challenge.
The track needs to stay. Historical, but also a great track for overtakes, which is why everyone chose to take the grid penaltys this race. It was a chaotic start but a lovely race to watch and the atmosphere was amazing.
I’m sorry for your pain Matt but let me say you guys are awesome. Thx for the content.
I don't think Ferrari really did anything wrong, as far as the team is concerned. Glad to see they're actually asking Leclerc for his opinions now, but his engineer sounded like a kicked dog.
I don't think it's a good idea to ask the driver which tires they should do next. It is the strategists job to make that decision... if anything, I feel like they are scared to mess something up again so if they ask Leclerc and it ends up a bad decision, then the fault is not theirs because they did not make that decision.
@@diime02 It is and isn't. You can only get so much information looking at data and arrays, so driver feedback is important too. Putting all the decisions into the driver's hands is wrong as well, but that's not what they were doing.
Of that was another team or another driver in the same team nobody would blame Ferrari on a driver over speeding in the pitlane. But Ferrari is already a meme and a lot of fans cannot see Leclerc doing anything wrong
@@Garvm The stop itself was a stupid idea and way too late. They knew the sensor was off right from the tear-off/break-duct issue at the start. In the prior stop, he was probably keeping it slower than necessary to prevent from violating the speed limit But at the end, they gave him barely a lap and hardly enough time to take a pit stop(gap to Alonso). In that situation, it is a miracle that Charles was only 1km/hr too fast. He simply didn't have enough time to be careful/slow enough not to cross the pit lane speed limit manually.
It's definitely a bad idea to have such open convo on strategy over the radio. there's a reason why MacLaren have Plan G. Ferrari didn't consider enough scenarios pre-race and didn't plan ahead.
I was on the track where bottas, we all sung Happy Birthday to him , hopefully he appreciated it!😂

I think Ocon has the potential of being a team leader, not just yet, but if continues his form then yeah.
Its kinda insane how much he gets ignored tbh. Like he literally had one of the best drives from the back to 7th and nobody gives a damn
There’s no way Ferrari could of took fastest lap. Max’s pace was overwhelming.
Fernandos collision with lewis had me like the two old men playing scrabble:
Yeet? Whats a yeet?

Ocon should be driver of the day, as it is not often you see a driver overtake two cars at once but the same driver doing it twice. Way to go Ocon.
Leclerc has to start making calls. Carlos clearly takes decisions with the team and with Leclerc the strategy just happens. Super talented driver but it seems he misses still some ingredients for the complete package.
they asked him to make the call on tyres and he couldnt , he couldn't pick hards or soft think about that. its at the beginning of this very video.
How many times did he retire from the lead this year? How many engines blew up? At this point it's Leclerc over compensating because Ferrari blew it early on in the season. Could he be closer in the championship? Sure, but at the end of the day, I think Leclerc is just as good as Max, he's just had to come from too far back too often.
Also, today was not about Max, but RB's insane car. If last year in Brazil was all about Merc's fancy engine, this was RB's fancy car. You don't dominate that way just on skill at these level of sports.
Exactly...Sainz dictates, Leclerc debates...
Even at the beginning you can see how much pain Matt is in
Extreme E is a good sport to watch!
More action and absolutely beautiful tracks.
This year I was hoping it wouldn’t rain, next year I’ll be praying for rain!
I think we must start accepting that not all Leclerc problems are Ferrari's fault. He's been making costly mistakes all by himself, too.
Everyone has been accepting that for some time now. Including Leclerc himself.
This time not so much his fault.
Imma say this, but pitting for fastest lap wasn't a bad move, they're losing by such a big margin that they need any and all points they can get, so fair play. That was a gamble worth whatever risk it carried
If he’d had a free pit stop, then yeah. But too much risk imo
But the difference between 5th and 6th place are 2 points. Considering how close Alonso was, was it worth getting one extra point by risking two?
No, you have to maximize the expected number of points. You do this by multiplying probability with reward.
In this case the reward was one point with moderate risk (fast lap, crash... getting behind Alonso, etc.) The punishment for either of these things was high. Now if you multiply the probabilities with the point reward/loss, you end up at a negative in this case. So you do not do it.
In this case, Alonso was much too close. Leclerc was lucky to overtake him. In vain, but still.
@@jd3330 with how far back in the championship he is, they need to go for every opportunity possible. Also, since Max would have lost the fastest lap, the difference would have been two points.
@@Resto35 With how close Alonso was, it was a bad decision. You’re risking losing TWO points by getting passed by Alonso for a mere ONE point. Would have should have blah blah blah. That’s pointless. Max still got the fastest lap and Charles finished 6th. Instead of having a net of +2 by holding position, he ended up -3.
During qualifying they said "The softs and mediums are good, the hard shouldn't be used this weekend" and I was like "Watch Ferrari put them on."
Hey Matt, first of all I just want to say that I absolutely love the Internet's best reactons series! I used to skip Race Rundown before you threatened to remove it. Now I always watch it. Watching Matt slowly lose his mind is my favorite part of these videos now.
As soon as Alonso came around turn one on the second to last lap I just rolled my eyes and said FFS
It was kind of a boring race - but my word, Verstappen was crushing it out there. I've been watching Formula 1 since the Hill, Irvine, Schumacher days, and Verstappens performance today was one of the most dominant ones, I've ever seen. It was a kind of a bizarre theatre.
Shout out to Albon, Vettel, Gasly and Ocon as well.
Max Verstappen is one of the very best ever compared to their own time. He is just on another level and anybody else. Definitely rates among Senna and Schumacher in pure talent already and he still has a lot of experience to gain.
Good communication with the drivers about strategy is priority number 1. If you can also do that in secrecy that’s a bonus. I applaud Ferrari for at least trying.
This race is a highlight of the year for me.
Ocon is a team leader. Needs more consistency but he's incredibly quick
I think he needs someone to be the primary seat for another season or two, but if he keeps racing like he did today that might change my mind. My dream partner for him is still Danny Ric
He needs qualifying consistency. Race consistency is very good.
@@JohnFromAccounting Yeah, that is one of Max's Achilles Heels as well. Dudes untouchable in a race, but he can be very inconsistent in Qualifying
Did this also remind you a little bit like Brazil 2021, in which Lewis was in another league, just like Max today?
Painful race as a Ferrari fan, but you have to respect the class that Max just put on today. This kid is in another league right now.
Max was a fantastic shot. Landing his tear off in Leclerc's brake cooling duct on lap 1
Imagine he's still at the team when Porsche enters. Nothing then is impossible. Best pure racer since schumacher
@@TonVanDerAa I mean he's already winning the championship. Not sure what's impossible now or how it would improve with Porsche?
I always thought that an f1 driver was unshakeable in their will to win, being able to come back from crushing defeats, like Hakkinen coming back from his major blunder in Italy in 1999...
But i honestly think that, at least for this season, Leclerc is just defeated, and unable to come back from it mentally... The amount of distrust in the team for their bad calls, his own unforced mistakes, and the general unreliability and lack of pace in the car compared to Red Bull might have just pushed him to a point where he simply can't keep it together and give 100%, only ever being able to go at 96%...
Would love to see max try a last to first, not do any qualifying and see what he can do
only place in the remaining races he would have any chance would be Monza, that would be a sight to see haha
Double overtake is a supercell meme! Clash ahead! 😂
"plan disaster" killed me lolololool
I think that Ocon havn't had the chance to show that he can be a teamleader. He have always been the younger less experianced driver with teammates like Perez, Ricciardo and Alonso
And always was the biggest rat.
Max has now entered the same place Lewis entered in 2014 onwards. He's got the best car, the best team around him, and he's performing at the top of his game. You could say he's the best driver, and I'd probably agree still, but.. you have to bare the car and team in mind too. It's years of work on RB and Verstappens side that has come to this moment and they're riding it. Even if max has a bad race or makes mistakes, he's still in the equivalent of what was the Mercedes not even 2 years ago so, it's likely he will still win the championship. You's see what I'm saying? I think he's still on par with Hamilton, Leclerc, Russel, Alonso, etc. I don't necessarily think he exceeds any of those as much as Hamilton didn't necessarily exceed any other driver in his dominance period. It's more right place right time and not that Verstappens skills alone is why he's winning. Of course he's incredibly talented but it's more than just him. RB is now in that zone and it could continue for a while, but I think it might reset in the next season cause of this car regs is much easier to adapt with than before. I suspect that another team will bounce back next season and challenge them. I can't see RB drastically running away like Merc did.
Engineer to leclerc: would you like pepperoni or ham on your pizza
I agree totally with all your comments. Well done sir.
Verstappen isn't driving to win the championship, he's driving to win each and every remaining race. He's gunning for most wins in a season
