  • In the first week of March 2022, we had crossed the Bay of Biskay on our Alubat OVNI 400 "ONWO ONOC". From La Coruña, we then continued our trip to Marina Rubicon on Lanzarote.
West of Peniche, we were attacked by two orcas. Unfortunately, we could not take good videos or pictures. The orcas were simply too fast. Fortunately, no damage occured to the boat and nobody was hurt.
The video contains some impressions of the places where we stopped during our trip.

Thanks for sharing this nice video and your unfortunately experience with the orcas. Hopefully no damage. It encourages us with our future OVNI this summer!

Grüezi, Onwo Onco Team. Nice video! Great to know that the Ovni 400 now is officially 'Orca-proof' ... not many sailboats can make that claim ... ;-)
I am wondering if you could comment a bit on the sailing performance of your vessel. I really like the design and layout of the contemporary Ovni but wonder how the sail ... after all, both the 400/430 and 370 do look a bit boxy.
    Best regards from Brazil,
    Markus
PS - looking forward to future videos

      Salü Markus,
thanks for your comments and the question.
We are pretty satisfied with the sailing performance, which, for me, is the combination of speed and comfort in tougher conditions (wind and waves). Please also see the parts of the videos which show the displays (TWS, AWS/AWA, SoG). The OVNI 400 is not a racing yacht. But it is faster than I had assumed before taking it over.
With our Code-D, we have a good speed also in low winds (60 - 120...140 degrees AWA).
Harbor manoeuvres can be tricky in strong wind, because the yacht has a flat hull and a high deck structure. And the area of the centerboard is small. And you do not have rudder steering power when in reverse, because the two rudders are not in the propeller flow. Without the bow thruster (in case of failure), moving into a berth can be difficult.
I hope you did enjoy also the other videos. And more of them will come. The next will be about our trip to the Cape Verde Islands and the return to Lanzarote in February/March 2023.
      Best regards,
      Martin

Hello Martin, thx for your reply. Looked up the numbers, and agree - looks good ... ;-)
Also, as far as I can tell from the videos, the motions of the boat seams to be quite gentle and that's certainly an important aspect.
I did enjoy your other videos and I am looking forward to upcoming issues.
Also, if you ever plan to sail over to Brazil, please let me know. I am based on the island of Florianópolis, in Southern Brazil which is a tranquil and beautiful spot.
      Abraços,
      Markus
