@@user-ql4kd7iz4u Again what are you having trouble understanding numpty? Commodity prices fluctuate vis a vis demand. I can live with that, thats called Capitalism. What i cant live with is a regressive incompetent government who attaches regressive incomepetant taxes to Inelastic Goods to "save the earth". This isnt hard to get. markets set the price, the fact that gasoline is inelastic makes it even more morally reprehensible that the government would add on cost to essentials. If Gas is $2.20 a liter GST/HST and federal/provincial excise taxes still apply ontop of that youre still paying 17 cents+ more per liter than you should be paying because of a carbon tax NUMPTY!
So governments absolutely set the price they are literally saying that Gas cant be cheaper than 47+ cents/liter (in ontario) because thats their base cost of excise/hst and carbon taxes on a liter of fuel. A company literally could not charge you less than that so they are absolutely setting a benchmark rate for fuel not the fuel companies. Ontop of that you arent even quantifying market effects that government cause on producers of gas which increase the cost of the product (overhead, payroll, property, regulatory taxes etc etc) that apply to every gasoline producer. Business doesnt pay that cost they pass that cost onto the consumer.

Yes, but can't you see, when we are taxed heavily on fuel we will not travel as much, as for example; to the cottage, a resort, a trip to distant family or to the Beach. That way all the businesses along the way will be less busy and not cause more of that harmful carbon in the air. They, in turn, will have to lay off employees thus furthering the reduction in travel time with those dirty cars. Of course, all the employees servicing the refrigeration, cooking, Landscaping, etc. will also be scaled back thus creating a domino effect. Pretty soon we're all sitting at home waiting for our HST and carbon rebate checks. Win-win!
