      Well, might as well desert Florida. We can build near the coast if we do it correctly. Buildings on stilts designed to take in storm surge. We need to plant our mangroves back! They used to be everywhere on the coast and many people remove them! They also clean the water!

    *I live on the intracoastal, one mile from here. Last Friday afternoon I walked the beach right there.*
    After Hurricane Ian, you could see that all the damage was caused by BAD SEAWALLS, not home construction. If yours and your neighbor's seawalls held up, the houses are fine. If your seawall held up, but your neighbor's didn't, the water eroded your foundation BEHIND your intact seawall. This damage could have been avoided if owners had maintained their seawalls better and built them stronger before construction of these buildings. This was a classic domino effect. One or two seawalls go down and there is a chain reaction.

    It appears some of the retaining walls for these multi unit buildings were insufficient to contain a storm surge from a Cat 1 hurricane, let alone Cat 2+. Not every building in the area was affected. That leads me to believe that engineering shortcuts took place in order to save money. Insufficient footings for the retaining walls is probably the culprit. Not the hurricane itself.

He basically said, see the destruction and the ocean and the debris? OMG! Do these stations have any idea of how stupid this type of reporting is? He could have talked about how long it took for this to happen, or how far back the original beach was, what the evacuation was like, or the future plans if known, etc.. Anything. But no, he had to go put his hands on a piece of cement block and act as if that was an incredible piece of the building. I had to stop watching because a 6th grader could have done better.

    Horrific scenes and very sad! Have lived by the sea my whole life and we have gone through this in the Northeast in New England on the coast for decades after severe N'or Easters and even tail end of hurricanes i.e. severe beach erosion and houses falling into the great Atlantic ocean! Only now, it's getting far worst because of rising sea levels and even worst beach erosion due to Global Warming/Climate change which is real and escalating! The beaches here are more narrow than in past decades because of rising sea levels/beach erosion and a famous beautiful beach here was completely decimated a couple of years ago! Along with more shark sightings because they love warm waters and also love to feed off the seals here! We're seeing the devastation from that not only here in the states but worldwide, hence the word "Global" as in "Global pandemic"! BTW, the Bible says to 'do not build your homes upon the sands', because the sands are always shifting! And we shouldn't be building i.e. over development/over-population on fragile eco-systems like wetlands/dunes that can't withstand tall skyscrapers, huge hotels and homes packed in like a can of sardines, either! Builders /architects need to go back to building hotels/apt buildings only two to three stories high like they had on the Florida coasts in the 1920s and 30s, not these high rise buildings! Common sense should rule the day and build them a bit more inland, not right on the beach too close to the mighty ocean! You can't beat Mother Nature and right now she's pissed off! So, stay environmentally aware! Keep safe Floridians!

I would have to leave and I would beg my father and girlfriend to come with me. Sure, there’s problems everywhere you go. But, the hurricanes are worse due to global warming. It’s overbuilt here. It wasn’t like this when I was a little girl and a great place to live.

    Much of this building was from an age of unlimited energy and resources. We even have the case of the 40 year old condominium collapsing in Florida on its own volition without a storm. It is difficult to imagine how all this previous infrastructure can be rebuilt in the approaching times of austerity and energy shortage. The sea level rise is arguably exacting the price of this energy largesse and makes the current situation even more difficult.

    • @mollygrant5918
      @mollygrant5918 Před rokem

      The condo collapse was at Surfside. As the name implies sea water, surf. The saltwater overtime eroded the steel in the building as well as the water soaking and eating away the columns of the building. What you get is a building collapse. Stay away from the beach building business. There is enough inland to build and live on for all of us.
