  • The first of a two-part series documenting the harrowing conditions experienced by many in the UK prison system. The documentary also reveals how the home office, when faced with evidence of serious assaults against prisoners, tried to buy their silence.
The Prisoner Solidarity Network is a group of people committed to dismantling the criminal justice system and building a society based on collective care. Our members include people inside and outside of prisons. Some of us are ex-prisoners and some are children, partners, or friends of people inside. Many of us are survivors of interpersonal and state violence. Some of us come to this work through our values rather than direct experience of the prison system.

We want to build a society where conflicts can be resolved without resorting to imprisonment and punishment, where our relationships with each other are not shaped by capitalism and where we are not divided by race, class, or gender.

I remember the brutality in the early 90’s as a young offender, grown men twice your size who would take pleasure, literally,in kicking the shit out of you. Months in segs. Isolation.Mental torture on a daily basis

I done time in the mid 90s young offenders institutes and it was much the same, screws torturing prisoners mentally and physically, the prisons I was in were still run under the old Borstal regime, it was a tough time to be locked up, nothing like today's prisons, no tvs and PlayStations you were lucky if you had small battery operated radio.

I was down the block in Hull this is what the block is like broken Windows too high to block up a cardboard table and chair thst someone had poured water under the gloss paint so it's sagged and was useless ( I ended up getting another 6-weeks for that down there after I got out after 8 weeks) a metal bed with no mattress from 7 a.m. to 7pm at night and me in only a pair of underpants far too big for me but ended up a godsend in the end close to months I spent like that at the age of just 16 years originally for forgetting my prison number and forgetting to say sir

these naive people are tricked and hood winked. Why not appoint ex prisoners to inspect prisons?

Even the restraint jackets that replaced the body belts are inhumane, i worked in the prison laundry and we would get the odd restraint jacket in for cleaning and i tried one on, very uncomfortable i couldnt imagine how uncomfortable it would be wearing it for long periods i only had it on for a couple of minutes and i couldnt wait to get the thing of.

The punishment is your freedom is taken away and your locked up in a 10x6 prison cell with another inmate after that it is supposed to be about rehabilitation getting you straight for your release not further punishment.
