  • A set of qawwalis performed at 'Vaibhav' organised by the Cambridge University Indian Classical Music Society.
This performance is a medley of two very well known Sufi poems, both by 14th century Persian mystic poet, musician and singer, Amir Khusro. Sufism is a religious order within Islam known for its mystical practices. The first poem addresses the eternal as a lover, and says ‘You took my heart, my soul and my entire being by just meeting eyes with me’. The second poem is in praise of the Sufi said, Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. The performance style is closely related to Ghazals and Qawwalis, which are quintessential to Hindustani semi-classical music. Set to raag Yaman Kalyan, this piece emotes the joy of absolute devotion. The tradition of Qawwali is that the performers and the audience clap with the performance, creating an intoxicating atmosphere.
