It’s shown in movies and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence in news stories that being drunk, relaxed or asleep will actually reduce your chances of injury during a car accident. But what does science say?! What's the best way to survive a car crash?!

It depends on the severity of the crash. If you're heading face first into an 18 wheeler you may want to relax in your last 3 seconds of life.
What if you're in an 18 wheeler too 🤔
wait 18 wheelers exist
@@sohanlikesgames5813 Wait wheels exist?
Yeah i'm sure you will be able to really relax those 3 seconds 😆
@@sohanlikesgames5813 thats just the trailer wheels + the truck which has 4
Why aren't there quotes from actual medical doctors that specialize in backs, necks, and heads instead or in addition to chiropractors?
I will tense up, because that's what I do, no matter the situation.
😆
I survived a head-on collision as passenger in the front seat with only a slight ankle injury. I'm sure I tensed up and braced before impact as I saw it all happening as if in slow motion. Our car and the other car both had 2 people in the front seats. Three of us only had minor injuries, while the fourth had a potentially serious back injury; the only one of us four that did not wear a seatbelt.
Seatbelts are underrated
Chiropractic group? Why not a psychic palm reader. Or an exorcist.
Yeah, actually unsubscribed because of that.
I also tense up before crashs in Sim Racing :) Seems like a natural reaction that's in us, and seems very logical what was presented in the video. I'm now a conscious tense upper :>
I like how you did not mentioned seat belt even once.
Or delve into how airbags factor into it..
Why would that matter? Its a given
This is why I always drive *asleep.*
I noticed that you quoted chiropractors as your ''subject authority'', but isn't chiropractic a pseudo sience?
Oh, it’s beyond pseudoscience, it’s straight up mysticism for a lot of them. More importantly, these are fake _medical_ experts which means people go to them instead of real doctors, and stuff like this only normalizes their presence and reinforces the false impression that they know what they’re talking about.
When I die, I want to go the way my grandfather passed away, peacefully and in his sleep. Not like the screaming and terrified passengers in his car. - Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey. 😂

2 years ago I was having repetitive nightmares about crashing and as I sometimes slept in the front seat of my car I would wake up enacting the bodily response of a split second survival reaction, trying to pull the wheel and brake only to realise I’m not moving. exactly 3 weeks later my nightmare happened for real and I smashed the curb and spun out.
I always wonder whether those nightmares saved me or influenced it, but regardless I’m just happy I’m alive to even tell the story
Intriguing until you cited chiropractors. Makes it hard to consider your other evidence.
Bro look into the evidence yourself then. Just because one source may be bad doesn’t mean the others are
@@hata6290Even if they were true, they could be misrepresented
Sure, there are more limb injuries when people brace during a crash, but limb injuries are far more survivable than injuries to the head/torso/spine.
Limbs are fantastic shock absorbers.
They also have better recovery prospects if you do survive, particularly neurological injuries to the brain or spine generally don't have a good prognosis for recovery. A broken arm or leg on the other hand is likely to make a full recovery with appropriate medical treatment.
I don't know about others, I don't think I could deliberately relaxing myself on such situation.
Before watching this to the end, do think you'll be safer TENSED or RELAXED?
You're safer by being non-existent
Relaxed 🤔
Tensed I think
Relaxed
Relaxed. I'm guessing your body would more likely be broken if rigid?
Very interesting video. I'm not so thrilled about quoting chiropractors as experts, though. They aren't doctors or scientists, and their "education" isn't a medical degree, just a diploma that generally fails to meet the standards for evidence-based medicine. In performed studies, there is no support for their field being helpful for anything with the potential exception for low grade back pain. Would have preferred to see references from medical professionals and literature reviews.
Very true.
chiropractors in general just really freak me out
I think it's important to point out that the above only really applies to American chiropractors
@@jensaugust743No it applies to all chiropractors not only to the american ones
Medical student here btw
You would hope that even the most ill-educated chiropractor would know if one person has more severe injuries than another and be able to ask whether the person was conscious or not
So it’s safer to be tensed up. Driving with your wife insures you will be constantly tensed up from all the unwanted driving instructions, warnings your driving too fast, too slow, too close, should change lanes, insisting she knows a better route to a location you’ve been driving to almost daily, for the last 30 years, reaching over to blow the horn if she feels you should have blown it at someone, stomping on an imaginary passenger side brake pedal, questioning every maneuver you make, pointing out irrelevant roadside attractions you should look at while in heavy, fast moving traffic, reminding you of one offramp you mussed 5 years ago (you missed it because she was pointing out an irrelevant roadside attraction) etc etc etc etc.
Sounds like time to find a new wife
Ah ah ah!! Lucky guy!
@@AnthonySigouin I wish I was him!
Why would you interview two chiropractors, a profession that is looked on with skepticism by other medical professionals, and not an orthopedic surgeon or rheumatologist?
Even if they’re not the most trusted their area of study revolves around the neck, spine, and the nerves which happens to be what is protected when tensing up in a crash
In the accident I had, everything happened too fast to react. One second I was driving, the next second the car was on its side, and the interior was full of smoke. Later the police told me that when the airbags go off, they cause the interior of the car to fill up with smoke.
As someone who survived smashing his head through a windshield in a bike accident. I can 100% confirm that if my neck hadn't been completely stiff I would have been a dead man or sitting in a wheelchair.
I was hit head on by a drunk driver. I was FUBARed (upper and lower injuries) while he only had a broken leg. Doctor said the only reasons I wasn't dead was due to sliding down in the seat and being young/athletic.
😲 I hope you have recovered OK? Thanks for sharing your story.
@@DebunkedOfficial appreciation for well wishes. I was definitely tensed when we wrecked. I was the passenger in the car hit by drunk driver. My driver swerved to get out of their way, they were in our lane, so passenger side took brunt of the force. I had plenty of time to tense up and brace. No back injury, thankfully, but face, chest, ribs, hips, and foot were all affected. Thanks for amazing content❣️
Finally you are back with your best video 👍🏻
I was in long wait ,
And thanks for this informational video ✅☑️
I will try to prepare from this accident ,
inshallah 🤲.
I think this is also true for airplane crashes (at least those survivable). I recall there was a survey of people who survived a crash landing and those who braced had better outcomes than those who didn't.
How would they tell if someone dead braced though?
@@davidtrottier7066 eye witnesses from those around that survived or autopsy can also show that
Haven't watched the video yet but I was always told that the safest would be the one asleep as their body is completely relaxed. Now to see if my whole life has been a lie or not... 😉
EDIT: Guess my life has been a lie.
I thought the same, that’s why we made this episode. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
I think it's much more complicated then it seems . To relax or tense is totally depends on the intensity of the impact , the type of vehicle you are in , whether you are sitting on the back seat or the front ones , the size and mass of your vehicle compared to the another one colliding with it , whether both the colliding vehicles are moving or one of them is not moving , the direction from which you are hit ( front , back and sides ) , your age , weight and height ratio and many things which I don't even know about can not be ignored while coming to any conclusion . But still a very nice video as I never thought of this before watching this video .
Also the note about "drunk driver surviving or sustaining less injuries" can be mainly to due the fact that they tend to be the ones instigating and initiating the impact, more often frontally against more vulnerable parts such as sides when in a T bone collision, and/or tend to be at a higher speed, be it speeding or lack of awareness and response time to brake and slow down, therefore imparting more kinetic energy against their victims
(plus other variables and factors unaccounted for, such as vehicle types and structure, such as pickups/trucks and SUV against smaller sedane sized vehicles; so that's completely unreliable and useless or even misleading data without more specific detailed info)
(and as the research shows, bracing might lead to limb injuries, but is does protect more the core organs from puncture injuries so it is safer in terms of better chances of sustaining less life threatening injuries)
Agreed and I saw it with my own eyes. I was a witness in a trial against a drunk driver where he was driving a pickup and went full speed off the highway in front of us and hit a very big tree head on. The tree actually bent the whole front of his truck in a "U". Turns out the guy was sleeping and he did not have a mark on him. The police picked him up wandering home walking from the accident. The police told us after we testified they were amazed he survived and was not hurt.
Very cool and helpful! My respect.
Awesome video - and congrats on one of the best sponsorship integration I've ever seen! :) Thanks!

They keep making great sponsorship integrations. Great pick with this one too. Got me interested.
Ok I can’t take anything a chiropractor says seriously. I’ve heard them say that their treatments can fix digestive problems. 🤨 Get better “experts.” Maybe some who actually went to medical school
Citing chiropractors? Jesus.
Yeah, I always relax my body when I jump down somewhere to brace the impact. :P
But the head position was a valid information.
This happened to my brother ,he survived but the van was a instant write off ,hes lucky he woke up coz he managed to get his seat belt off and the fireman who broke him out of the wreckage reported he was crouched up under the passenger side foot well ,can only imagine he freaked and bolted for cover which saved his life ,he had hardly any sleep the night before and had been driving along motorway after a day at work ,fell asleep and wrapped the van into the central reservation that divides the two directions of traffic causing a pile up for the motors behind at least 3 other motors involved
Utter “build a house.” Or “paint a picture.” Then just. Let. Go.
If relaxing would be better, then if a plane is going to crash, then you would hear: "ladies and gentlemen. Please relax. The plane is going to chrash. I repeat please relax" (massage chairs start buzzing)
8:15 That's what I was thinking all this time!
I've experienced both ways and yes tensing up gets you hurt more.
I almost died in a severe car accident in 2018. We flipped the car multiple times and hit a tree. All the while I was asleep and only woke up after everything had happened. I survived without even a scratch.
The police and paramedics told me the reason why I survived is because I was asleep and “went with the flow” of the collision.
For me personally, being asleep saved my life. 👍
What about the "brace" position in an aircraft crash?
I think we were created to instinctively act in a reasonable way when in danger. With research and training we can optimise our behaviour in specific situations I suppose.
gosh, the muscle stick man is so creepy...
Stiffening and bracing is automatic anyway. So it's all up to chance anyway if you aren't bracing when it happens or not.
Like maybe sleeping in the passenger seats.
Depends if your driving or not 😉
So I was sliding right into a pole I had time turning the wheel pulling e break non help ik it was coming so just got ready and boom nothing well car was totaled but I was good cop was so surprised when I said I was driving he just keep asking if I was ok completely fine non hurt sore next few days but that’s it I believe it was me knowing and getting ready for the impact helped a lot !
My last crash....only play I had was to relax back in the seat. Had I not the tree that crushed my cockpit would have cracked my head.
That is useful!
That’s some educational video bro keep it up…….soon hardwork will pay off

ive said this twice before but i love you and this channel!
What if you hold the headrest tightly before the crash?
Wow, it’s almost like our evolved natural reaction (tensing up) protects us
drunk people fare better staticially falling down stairs or in car crashes than sober so i guess relax
Falling is another topic we want to look into because initially the opposite option to the car crash results seem to be the better option.
This "myth" predates the Internet by decades.
I've heard that myth often. But because I couldn't understand any scientific reason for it I remained skeptical. What was presented here makes logical sense.
By statistics being drunk is the safest.
I would rather die like my grandfather, quietly in his sleep, not screaming like the people in his car!
Very sad to see chiroprators testimonys being trusted as scientific evidence.
Cars are the worst!! Every time I hear something new about them, it’s something to add to my list of stuff I hate about them. Over a million people die each year because of cars?? That number is staggering, when you think about it. Compare that to deaths by train or plane each year (about a thousand and a couple hundred, respectively) and it’s downright terrifying. What the hell are we doing??
Is there anybody that has not been directly or indirectly affected by the consequences of a car crash in their lives? Because I feel like everyone has, and that’s not okay
Debunked claims to use scientific evidence, then quotes Chiropractors instead of actual medical professions. *facepalm*
But what about if you get Hit by a car?
Can u do a video on G-Force etc
We have covered G-force in czcams.com/video/rg7I99kfTks/video.html or is there another angle you wanted to see explored?
@@DebunkedOfficial Another Angle in Racing and Flying you know like fighter jets etc
yes. time saved 8:59
yes
Couldn’t they build dummies in all combinations from no body parts braced, then by braced arms only, braced legs only, braced upper body only, braced arms and upper body, braced legs and upped body, finally braced arms legs and upper body? Might be too expensive?
So the lesson is: pick your poison and the injuries you want to get
Noone relaxes before a crash. You must be sleeping or under influence of booze or drugs.
so brace cuz ur back can never heal
Better to break your leg than to break your neck.
Think about a hockey player checking another player. Now suppose the guy getting checked has his attention elsewhere but, the guy doing the checking has his body rigid. Because he's about to hit someone.
Who ends up worse off?
Hiiiiii Stu. Looking quite dashing as usual. 💋

The only 2 experts are chiropractors. Would like to know what medical specialists would say. Another thought is how many people can overcome an instinctual brace and relax muscles in 1-2 seconds without training of some kind. Not one of your finest vids.

@@DebunkedOfficial yes but chiropractors are basically bullpoop, they are _not_ doctors. Unless of course they have a doctorate, perhaps in literature.. or even an actual medical degree.

It all depends on the crash. Vehicle sizes, speeds, other road hazards. A lot of scenarios you'll get got either way.
Even if there's only a slim chance I'll survive, I think I'd rather tense up. The alternative is death after all.
Death is faked
Chiropractors? Are you serious?
As someone that survived a hit and run while on my bike I can relate to this that this statistic is true.also I should probably say that I was not tensed up (Don't worry I sustained minor injuries)

I sure wonder why conservatives newsers don't cover bad stories about conservatives
And also you need to realize that there are little to no "left leaning" newsers in the world.
Yeah, never heard it's safer to be asleep. I now drunks usually aren't hurt as bad, because they are relaxed when they crashed, nothing about being asleep. The title is weird. Is this some type of gas lighting? Its just weird.

The neck. Why is it so vulnerable to everything?
It's a small set of bones surrounded by very little muscle, fat or skin. Also it is supporting your head so it's very susceptible to whiplash injuries. You'd think we would have evolved more protection for our spine or neck since it is so important. But I guess there's only so much room in the human body
It works well enough, at least well enough for the species to perpetuate itself. Which is all evolution cares about. But yeah, not how an engineer would approach it!
It's not possible to choose so the video is pointless :( you can't overcome this reaction, accidents don't give you time to think and you react by instinct.
You lost me when you started quoting chiropractors. Their medical opinions should ALWAYS be disregarded, and using them is the opposite of research. First and last view on your channel, but this comment helps you with the algorithm, so...meh.
Find it extremely difficult to listen to an "expert" that involves the word chiropractic in their name/qualifications. Should've probably gone for a combination of physiotherapists/neurophysicians/orthophysicians rather than a "professional" that literally CRACKS your back to heal it lolz... decent video though!
🎃
Wow, a lot of hate on chiropractors in the comments. Chiropractors make sense here as they are often the primary professional that treats those with residual car wreck injuries (like whiplash).
ROFL @ 'primary professional'.
"Send those EMTs away, I want a chiropractic responder."
I have better advice: dont think during a crisis. Let your training and instincts guide you. Thats why they exist.
Did they cite chiropractors on traumatic car accident stuff!? 😭🤌🏾
