The first stage of the Tour de France a 182 kilometre almost closed circuit north of Bilbao. There are five climbs on the route, the last three of them in the last 45 kilometres. On the last kilometre, the climb is 5.4%.
Actually, the riders have many more climbs ahead of them, but the organisers have categorised ""only"" five of them. From the start, the road points upwards, and the first official summit of the Tour 2023 comes after only 13.8 kilometres ridden. The Côte de Laukiz is a 2.1-kilometre climb with 6.9%.
After the descent, it remains quiet for about 30 kilometres, then the climb continues for 4.4 kilometres at an average of 5.2 %. This climb is not counted for the mountain classification, but the obstacle immediately following it is. The Côte de San Juan de Gaztelungaxte climbs 7.6% over 3.5 kilometres. There are 114 kilometres to go until the finish.
A hilly stage with a kilometre-long flat section and subsequent descent to Gernika-Lungo heralds the end. 42 kilometres before the finish, the riders go around the Col de Morga - 3.9 kilometres at 4.1% - and shortly after the descent, the Côte de Vivero awaits, a 4.2 kilometre long climb at 7.3%. Once at the top, the descent is not immediate.
However, after a few kilometres this is the case. From the descent, a flat section of about 10 kilometres leads to the foot of a real wall. The Côte de Pike climbs at 10% for 2 kilometres to the summit, just under 10 kilometres from the finish. The riders then descend to Bilbao, where the last kilometre has a 5.4% climb.
